Lou having too much power was a major factor in his firing. Spurrier was coming on the scene with an air it out, score at will offense. It was easy on the eyes and fun to watch. Lou was the grind it out power football offense that was considered boring. Lou was bigger than life at ND and he let Wadsworth know it. There were several behind closed doors meetings between the two that turned into screaming matches. Everyone one in the football office could hear it. My best friends mom was the secretary for the AD at the time and heard these arguments. Lou was being pressured into changing his philosophy and was also constantly being reminded who his boss was. Wadsworth flexed his muscle and Lou said enough is enough and stepped down. IMO the rumor of the record was nothing more than the administration saving face of letting go of a legend. I think Lou's love for ND welcomed the rumor to take hold so no bad light would shine on the University.
Exactly. It's silly to think that Lou left because of the record. Records were made to be broken. It was just a fairy tale so everyone could walk away with heads held high.
I'll share one more story regarding my family and Lou. My grandpa met Lou a numbers of times during his time at ND and briefly after. The first time was at the Hawaii game in the early 90s. My grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents all flew out for that game. I don't recall the details exactly so bear with me, but one of my uncles found out where Lou was staying and left a letter mentioning they were there for the game and how big a fan my grandfather was. Lou's wife got the letter and called my uncle's room and told them to wait at a conference room at the hotel at a certain time. Lou showed up and surprised them, he ended up cancelling a meeting engagement and spent a half hour or so jawing with my grandpa. He still keeps the picture of the meeting on the fireplace.
During that first meeting Lou shared that ND had just offered him a new 5 year contract, which was a big deal at the time because the school hadn't offered one in some time I guess, he had been only getting short term contracts up till then. This information hadn't been leaked to the press yet, my family was the first to hear it outside Lou's circle. Being a finance/accounting guy, my grandpa also shared some ideas for improving the stadium and revenue, one of which was the addition of the box/gold seats. Lou put him in touch with someone at the university, who in turn later offered my grandpa the chance to buy in to the gold seats as one of the first ticket holders. He likes to think it was his idea to add the box seats, but in reality I'm sure the university was already considering it by that point. We've been in Section 10, Row E ever since '97.
But yeah, aside from being a big donor and knowing some other ND families close to the program, my grandpa talked with Lou a handful of times after that Hawaii game. Rockne's record never really came into play as far as why he left, it definitely wasn't the main reason.
