Mother F-er called in sick for the Assassin's Creed release too.

lol

He powered through his Spiderman flu tho.
Man, it's been so long since a video game made me skip class. I wouldn't call in to work for a game......unless it's the next Elder Scrolls. Then I'll have 2-3 days of PTO documented a month in advance.

I'm also working on a "home theatre"-light set-up to make gaming/movies even more fun with the family. The first projector I ever bought was at 22 from Best Buy and it was a 720 DLP. We thought it was incredible. The stuff out now is truly mind-blowing.

Anyone on here set-up a projector in the past few years?

Just to keep you ahead of the loop, COVID variant "Star Ocean" drops tomorrow. Influenza type "Super Mario RPG" is making a comeback on November 17th. Then I hear there's a strong cold going around, doctors are expecting an outburst around November 10th and they're calling it COD: Modern Warfare 3

I miss my 82" DLP.
What I don't miss is changing the bulbs out every few years, and then the several white dots that started showing up when the chip started going bad. Couldn't even get someone to take that thing on Facebook Marketplace or Let Go, so I dropped it off at a Goodwill.

Yeah, if the chip goes bad you're cooked. The bulbs were only a minor inconvenience as far as I'm concerned.

We built about 120" screen out black out cloth, stapler and framed 2x3s with pocket holes. Played TES Oblivion, lots of Halo 2 and 3, Bioshock 1 & 2, etc. Have you looked at the new projectors? From what I've seen, they've come a very long way. Some are so bright they can be used in sunlit rooms. Still trying to find long term reviews from the past couple years because I can't afford the newest 4k stuff without blowing the budget.

Nah, I don't want to mess with bulbs anymore, so I'm out on projectors of any kind. Other than the bulbs having to be replaced, the other downside to DLP was you're asking a light bulb to do true black. Made watching movies like Star Wars a real bitch. I'm enjoying the LED/LCD lifestyle now, went with a 72". I don't need to upgrade for awhile I think, so I'll probably ride it out and when 8k gets cheap because it gets replaced by something else...I'll jump on then.

I am from the golden age of arcades. Just Games on Ogden Avenue in Westmont IL was my go-to place.

Now 40 years later I took my daughters to Gallop Ghost Arcade in Broookfield IL. They have a lot of upright arcade games. My daughters were like this place is boring and dad you are a loser…. Lol

Kids don't appreciate the good stuff these days. They want to play crappy games like Roblox when I've got entire libraries and systems with bangers from NES era through today

Got a buddy here with a theater/gaming room and he uses a UST projector. $4k I think he said it cost. But its pretty mind blowing the tech it has to get a “120 screen that bright and crisp.

My wife would lose it if I ever spent that much at once for gaming lmao.

Yeah, we don't need a short throw for where we're looking at setting it up. But those have also come a long way.

There are a bunch of heavy hitters in the under $2k, then there are a bunch of really high quality in the <4k. I find it really hard to set a budget and stick to it since it always seems like a little more money can get you a bit more quality. I'm hoping there are some specials this time of year.

My wife had a work thing in Washington DC during the summer, so my 7yo and I went with her to see the sites while she did work stuff.

One of the days was his birthday, so I let him plan the whole day. We went to a hole-in-the-wall waffle place for breakfast, let him do everything in the national children’s museum, took him souvenir shopping, then had some time to kill before a showing of the new Ninja Turtles movie… so he decided we should go to the arcade on the waterfront. It had a lot of the classics, and some newer racing and zombie shooting games. I couldn’t get him to leave the place… we spent a LOT of money on games lol.

Almost didn’t make it to the movie on time because I had to drag him out in time to get lunch first (he picked Chick-Fil-A in Chinatown lol)

I saw a movie with the wife once where 2 women were shopping and one said if you don't love it in the store then you won't love it when you get home.
I treat electronics that way now. If it's not exactly what I want then I won't buy it because I will never be happy with it and I'll be looking to upgrade it within a year anyways.

Been playing on the Raspberry Pi quite a bit lately. Decided to replay the Tetalogy of Breath of Fire: I, II, III, IV. I've never played the 5th game Dragon Quarter, I've heard bad things. Grew up playing this series, and while it isn't as polished as some other RPGs during this era from SNES-PS1 it is still fun. Who doesn't love turning into dragons and laying waste to their enemies? There's some minor spoilers below if you've never played the games, but these are all 23 years old or older so...yeah.

Breath of Fire I - This was the one that started it all on the SNES. Surprisingly ol' Ted Woolsey did some of the translation for the game and he was also the Director for the English version, although there were other translators involved. Some of the dialogue is a little basic. The combat is fun, just simple turn based action for JRPGs at the time. The dragon transformations are nice, and they're the least complicated of the series. There's a one time AP/MP cost up front for transformation and then you're free to attack without additional costs. It could be considered a bit OP, which is probably why they turned it down in future games. The story is a little bland, but there's some gripping moments and some decent characters. The antagonist needed more screen time. Not a bad start to the series.

Breath of Fire II - This one gets a bad rap for translation, but I honestly don't think it's that bad. Woolsey wasn't a part of this project, maybe that's why it's viewed negatively on the dialogue by some. Story wise I've always enjoyed this one a lot, and some of the party members are fun. I don't care for a few, like Sten, Gene, and Spar. Katt, Rand, and the return of Bleu are awesome. For me this has the weakest dragon transformations of the series. You have to spend all your AP/MP for just one all out dragon attack...kind of lame. The attacks often hit hard, but it kind of blows you have to spend all your AP. It felt like they were trying to curb the OP nature of dragon transformations from BoF I and they went too far. For me that's the only real downside to this game, I love just about everything else. The antagonist doesn't get a lot of screen time, but it's a slow build throughout the game so it's kind of worth it. Love the Shaman system and being able to merge with party members to make them more powerful and changing their looks.

Breath of Fire III - This one is probably the best in the series. It's hard for me to choose personally between this one and BoF II, but this one just does a lot of things so well. The Master system allows you to tailor characters and make them stronger based on who you're apprenticing under. The dragon system is by far the coolest in the series. You pickup "genes" around the world and you can create a ton of different dragon combinations based on which genes you splice together. For every gene you use it increases the AP/MP cost per turn for being transformed into a dragon, so it can get costly but it's worth it. It was such a cool upgrade after BoF II's bad dragon system. Aside from dragon transformations which are awesome, you can also learn enemy skills for the first time in the series. This allows you to tailor characters further and give them additional skills that can be helpful in fights. The characters are all pretty good in this one, Peco and Momo aren't my favorites but most fans seem to love them. The story is very good, they're some great bad guys and this game ties in well to the previous two. The fishing is actually pretty fun in this one too, and I don't usually care for minigames. If you never played the series, and you want to play any of the BoF games, this is probably the best one to try first. It does pretty much everything well and is a fun play through.

Breath of Fire IV - Until recently I've never been able to finish this game, and I've tried twice before. Fans like this one quite a bit, not as much as III, and I quite frankly can't see why. This game suffers greatly from camera/perspective issues. It's an isometric view much like III had, but for whatever reason they decided to put a lot of tall buildings and foreground obstacles to impede your view. Sometimes they use this to hide goodies, but more often than not it's just a constant distraction that makes navigation a chore. You're constantly spinning the camera around trying to find a path, often having to do this multiple times just to get from one screen to another. It's a real headache, something that wasn't required in BoF III. Story wise this one is pretty damn bland, although there are a few gripping scenes that are shocking and hit hard. I really didn't like the art direction they went with in this one, it felt like a step back from the previous game's beautiful sprites. The characters seem a little bit more lifeless too. They did do something neat with the antagonist as you play through his eyes at times, but there are also other bad guys you'll encounter. There's a bit of an unresolved story arc with one that really grates on me, a dude deserved to die and he gets away! As far as the dragon transformations, these are probably the worst in the series for me or just slightly above BoF II. You don't shift into a dragon as much as you shift into a half dragon thing and then summon dragons for attacks. It's weak, there's still an AP/MP cost per turn as you're morphed, and it just doesn't feel powerful or inspired. It was a clear step back from BoF III's gene system. Overall, even after finally finishing this game, I just strongly dislike it. It has some redeeming qualities, but I didn't find any of the changes they made to be beneficial compared to the previous game. It was just a clear step backwards and it may be why the series ended up fading away shortly after. If there was one change that might have been okay it was the combat system itself. They allowed you to chain some abilities together into combos or create new attacks all together by allowing two characters to use two abilities to create a new one. It doesn't always fire though, and it's kind of unnecessary.

I'm thinking about returning to another PS1 RPG, Beyond the Beyond, now that I've finished with my BoF playthroughs.

I really need to research the Raspberry Pi process. Having so many game libraries at your fingertips sounds amazing.

Don’t know where I’d find the time to play everything on my current backlog, though, never mind adding all the cool SNES/PS1 stuff I never got into. Took me a couple more weeks to platinum “AC: Mirage” than I thought it would, and that was only like 40 hours, tops.

I already had “Horizon: Forbidden West” loaded on the PS5 and ready to go now that I’m done with AC… but then I picked up “God of War: Ragnarok” and a “Spider-Man Remastered/Spider-Man: Miles Morales” combo on Black Friday, so I’m not sure what to play first.

Started GoW, but not sure I’m ready to commit to the punishment, yet. Might switch over to the more-forgiving Spider-Man first and see if the hype carries me straight through the trilogy… I’ve seen gameplay vids of Spider-Man 2, and it looks pretty damn good.

It was my pandemic project. I started with the basic 64GB microSD card that they suggest in guides and I quickly found as I added PSX ROMs from my Playstation disc collection that it filled up fast. I began adding a few more games that I always wanted to try, next thing I knew I had to have a 256GB card to fit it all. The setup and configuration took awhile, but once you've got a working system you can make a backup and you're good should anything happen. I recommend only using name brand cards if you try it, I found 3rd party SD cards are junk and prone to errors.

The nice thing is the console itself is the size of a wallet, it's smaller than the controller, so it makes it ideal for taking on trips. I really like the 8bitdo wireless controllers, I've got one that looks like an old SNES controller with added thumb sticks and triggers. Putting an arcade emulator can be fun with 4 people, like playing the old Simpsons game or loading up N64 Mario Kart. When I created my project with a Raspberry Pi4 board I think RetroPie could only handle up to PSX/Dreamcast/N64, but since then I think they've now got stable PS2 emulators too. I haven't looked into yet, still have a lot of old games I want to replay and try a few on Dreamcast I never got the chance play.

If you have the cash you can also look into buying a Steamdeck and then downloading the program EmuDeck onto it. Makes a lot of more complicated emulation stuff dead simple (because its optimized for uniform hardware) and then you have the whole thing portable. Obviously then you also have a steamdeck as well.

If anyone is interested, I think this was the guide I originally used for setup: How to build a Raspberry Pi retrogaming emulation console

It's a few years old now, and there's a lot you can cut out like the Apple instructions if you're using Windows, but it's fairly simple setup really. The configurations and tweaks are where you can end up spending the most of your time, depending on what look and feel you're going for and how much work you want to put into it. If you just want to play games, that setup doesn't take long. If you decide you want to add themes, or play with other emulator options (I found the N64 emulator to be lacklaster in performance so I downloaded and configured a different one), that can add some time and complexity to the project. Also if you decide to scrape for game metadata that can be a bit tedious and add a lot of time (Scraping metadata involves downloading a screenshot of gameplay that shows up when you're browsing your game collection along with a detailed description of each game the community wrote up). Scraping isn't necessary, but it adds to the presentation. It does take quite a bit of time if you have a lot of games, even though it's an automated process.

Keep in mind too that Pi board prices rose drastically during the pandemic as other people got the itch and supplies dwindled. I think the prices have come back down a bit, so if you can find a Pi 4 board or later at a good price the rest should be easy to obtain for cheap.

Your seasonal reminder that Steam's Fall Sale is going on right now and ends tomorrow! If you have any games on your Wishlist, probably 2/3 or better of them are discounted right now. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a few, but may wait till the Winter Sale as I should have a gift card or two after the holidays.

Just knocked out Beyond the Beyond on PSX. This is a pretty basic RPG, one of the first on the system. The combat is very simple from a structure standpoint, but high on the difficulty side as you progress. The story isn't anything special, but it's not awful. There is a really neat plot device early on that I've always liked involving the hero Samson. The art style has a nice touch to it, the characters use little sprites for the overworld and a blend of 2D/3D for battles.

The difficulty on this one is pretty damning. At some point in the game you start facing monsters that will cast AOE spells against your party, and they don't hold back. It's common for one of these AOEs to wipe out half a party member's health or more, even when you're leveled greatly. They really force you to grind in this one. I may have just started it on Friday, but I was playing on 3X speed on the Raspberry Pi to speed up leveling. Even with heavy grinding the battles can be a slog in some dungeons, and a few are pretty unforgiving. You really have to stock up on pots ahead of some of these. At some point it does get a bit easier and the AOE spells aren't as lethal, especially if you find Resist Jewel/Orbs as they permanently reduce magic damage by half...a blessing in this game.

With the 3X speed I got 45 hours into the game, which isn't shabby, not too long or too short for an RPG from that era. It's a solid C+/B- game for the mid 90s.

I picked up Parkitect a few days ago, it's on sale for another 10 hours for $14.99 which isn't a bad deal. I remembered playing Rollercoaster Tycoon a few decades ago, Parkitect looked like that game on steroids. I also played Theme Park, which was kind of the predecessor for all of these types of games. As you'd expect, Parkitect is cleaner, more user friendly, and a lot more decoration options as well as coasters than the old games. If you're doing campaign mode you have to research new coasters to unlock them. You'll be given a target/goal to complete for a given map, then you can either move on once you've reached your goals or you can keep playing a map in Sandbox mode.

I'm not very artistic, I go for functionality over aesthetics typically. Park guests want decorations and not just rides lined up in rows, they want eye candy to look at while they're riding rides. I haven't found the sweet spot as far as minimalist decorating, but $$$ seem to be the key...and rocket ships. Bitches love rocket ships apparently.

You can do a lot of things to attract people to your park, aside from keeping it clean and decorated. You can advertise new rides, or the park itself, or free tickets/merch to attract people. The best way to bring new guests seems to be just building Thrill Rides in general, especially coasters. There's a fine line when buildings coasters though, it's easy to get carried away and make them too intense for most guests. You've got to aim for high excitement, but medium to high intensity, although if it's a good ride people will still jump on if it's "Extreme."

I've got 11 hours into it so far, it's pretty good for the $15 price point. If anybody enjoys theme park sims this one is decent.
