Steam Summer Sale ends in a few days, just a reminder.
Been playing the new version of 7 Days to Die lately. I love that game, probably my favorite Survival/Crafting game in the genre period. I don't know why they don't just do the full release, it's been in "Alpha" for almost 10 years now and it's super stable. The only thing I can think of is they haven't added a few features that they've wanted to do for some time, namely NPC Bandits/Raiders. The game is very good though, great to play with friends or even solo.
I've also started playing the first Suikoden on my Raspberry Pi. I really wanted to try Suikoden 2 out first as I had been hearing good things for years on that one, but apparently there's some kind of tie in with the original game where you can use save data so I figured I'd try out the original first. The game is certainly very old school turn based RPG. The story is decent, although no other game probably suffers more from a "too many background characters" as this one. There's 108, yes, 108 possible characters you can recruit for your faction. Not all of them are combat characters, some just fulfill roles in your base, but yeah...it's a lot. There are some main characters for sure that are fleshed out better than others, and the game often forces you to take some of these characters on mission for plot purposes. Sometimes they force you to take a few too many characters, IMO, which kind of defeats the purpose of giving you options.
The one nice thing about the combat in this game is it kind of prevents you from over leveling. Monsters that are below your level will give very little XP, HOWEVER, if you take some under-used characters into battle against very strong monsters they'll level up exponnetially faster to catch up to your other characters. That's a nice feature in a game with several dozen playable characters.
Overall I'm enjoying the first game though and looking forward to Suikoden 2 which gets rave reviews and is often on Top RPG lists. In fact, in an era (PS1) of RPGs that included FF VII, FF Tactics, Lunar, Star Ocean, and SotN there are many that put Suikoden 2 at the top of the list.
