Can you give your thoughts on DK:TF? It's been on my to-do list for 5+ years now.
Exactly what you'd expect. Tight controls, smart level design, difficult-but-fair with decent replay value from collectibles and challenges. Definitely worth the $40 that it's been going for recently.

You should get Link's Awakening and, more importantly, Hollow Knight. HK is possibly my favorite game ever made. The combat system is amazing, it has a wicked, but fair difficulty level, and the world is just incredibly immersive -- may go play it now after typing that.

Seconded. Best Metroidvania game I've ever played.

It looks like, "Ren and Stimpy: The Video Game" your Honor....

It's pretty dark. But you do you.

The aesthetic is amazing. It’s a beautiful, beautiful game that is actually quite dark (as others have mentioned).
I find it completely unappealing for some reason. I loved Ori and the Blind Forest, Limbo, Celeste, etc. but this one doesn't do it for me.

End of the decade boys. What are everyone's top 10 games?

My list. The top 4 as a group are the best of the best, but beyond that nothing is in any particular order:

Masterpieces

Bloodborne: Dark Souls perfected thus far. Deep, deep combat. True Lovecraftian horror. Amazing visuals. Some of the best level design of any FromSoft game. It's a masterpiece.

Portal 2: The only game I can think of that's more perfect in doing exactly what it was going for is Portal, which unfortunately came out in 2007. Masterpiece.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt: The most technically impressive thing I've ever played. Deep story, deep RPG mechanics, stupid big world, and Geralt. Masterpiece.

Undertale: Basically a love-letter to Earthbound and the most meta-game I've ever played. Unbelievable experience. Masterpiece.

Rest of the top 10:

Nier Automata: Beat em up with an existential nightmare sci-fi plot. One of the most consistent games from a theme perspective ever.

Hollow Knight: Best metroidvania of all time IMO. Very close to masterpiece territory. Amazing art design. A melancholy game that kept astounding me with how fucking huge it was. "This costs $15?! How?!"

Dark Souls: Created a genre. Best level design of all time. Only thing keeping it from a masterpiece is it's back end where they clearly ran out of time.

Fallout: New Vegas: Took Bethesda to school on how to make their own games. Skyrim has better combat, but it's not close as an RPG.

Last of Us: One of the best narratives in gaming. Gut punch feelings abound.

God of War (2018): Excellent reworking of a franchise that I was expecting to hate.

Honorable Mentions:

Mass Effect 1 + 2: Great worldbuilding, great characters, and the first one has my favorite twist in all of gaming.

P.T.: Scariest game of all time is a demo.

Minecraft: Not really a pick for my tastes but this one feels like it's going to be the top of a lot of lists when people look back at this decade with hindsight.

Rocket League: Pure fun. Video games are fun.

Super Mario Maker 1 + 2: Unlimited 2D Mario.

Zelda Breath of the Wild: So close but the lack of dungeons and jank combat really has soured my memories of the game the farther I'm removed from it.

Notable games I didn't pick that I expect to be roasted over:

Red Dead Redemption 1 + 2: They're great, but yeah.

FIFA 12 or so was super good too, the one where you could train specific attributes and edit players,...

I logged a decent number of hours on Star Wars Battlefront and For Honor, but neither belong in any "top 10" list.

My personal top ten, not rated by critical acclaim, just the ten I have enjoyed the most..

1. Red Orchestra II - came out in 2011.
2. Europa Universalis 4
3. Fifa 15
4. Cities: Skylines
5. Skyrim
6. Company of Heroes 2
7. Battlefield 1
8. Battlefield 4
9. NCAA 2014
10. Fallout 3

That really isn't in a particular order. Just the games that I've dumped hours into.

The Witcher 3
Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 1
Skyrim
GTA V

Those are my top 5 in order. Others:

Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
The Show
The Last of Us
Spiderman
Limbo + Inside

Dark Souls is absolutely NOT my kind of game. Didn't play any Nintendo games other than Smash Bros which I do love. Honorable mention to Heavy Rain which was basically a game made for me so I loved it but objectively wasn't very good.

So since NCAA past on FIFA kind of took it's place for me in terms of hours spent in career mode. This year I tried different stuff:

I tried to get a lower level English club and move up (Blackpool) but found no connection to players I know nothing about and after a season I deleted it and...

took my EPL club Newcastle. After a couple years though your transfer budgets are SO BIG in the EPL that you can buy anyone in the game, I had a squad that included: Timo Werner, Mbappe, De Ligt, Marcus Rashford, Tah and others while also sprinkling in my home run youth league players... it quickly became far too easy.

So I started over this past weekend with what i usually do, take Celtic and see how far i can take them in Europe on a limited budget. SO much more fun...

I think it's so hard to put together a list when there's so many different genres, but if I had to do a Top 10 it's probably something like this in no order:

Final Fantasy IV
Fallout 2
Fallout New Vegas
Star Wars Galaxies (Mostly for the JTL space dogfighting, reminded me of the DOS game TIE Fighter back in the day)
River City Ransom (River City Ransom: Underground released a few years ago is pretty good too, nice follow up for fans)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Super Metroid
Chrono Trigger
7 Days to Die
NCAA 14'

Honorable mention: Dragon Quest XI, Castelevania II: Simon's Quest, Base Wars on NES, Age of Empires II, Armored Core.

And here I thought my list having one game released ten years ago was bending the "best of the last decade" thing.... reps for a Basewars drop though, only game that missed was the ability to just take one team and go.... also, I had to double take at you mentioning CV2, I remember you shitting on it a bunch...

Oh damn, best of the last 10 years? Missed that, saw a few older titles in the lists and thought it was just a Top 10. So, if I had to do games from the last decade, no order...

7 Days to Die
Dragon's Dogma
Fallout New Vegas
Payday 2
Wasteland 2
NCAA 14
Dragon Quest XI
Red Dead Redemption
Gran Turismo 5
Pillars of Eternity

Honorable Mention: Army of Two: 40th Day, Outer Worlds (I'd put it higher, but haven't finished it yet)

Na, it IS a super tough game (Till you get to the end) just for the fact it's entirely cryptic on what you have to do in some sections, but otherwise it's an excellent game imo. I prefer it over Castlevania I and III because the music is superb and I hate systems that take away your items when you get hit/die. I can handle losing hearts, but take away my flame whip? Nope.

There's been many iterations of this song throughout the series, but I think the original is still the best:

If you remember me hating on it, that's probably stemming from the fact I've linked the Angry Video Game Nerd's review of it years ago. It's funny, but I don't necessarily agree with everything he says:

I beat Dragon Quest XI with all Draconian Quests turned on at the same time. That's a fucking experience, some boss fights are damn near impossible. I wouldn't even have attempted it, but I saw a dude on Youtube doing the same thing and decided to give it a go. The Mordegon fight takes an hour and a half, no joke.

Why was GTA5 so much better than the rest, and apparently enough to make it a top 10 game?

I played the 2nd one and liked it but never played another.

Played the 2nd one like....Vice City? Or are you talking about GTA II?

Honestly I don't think GTA V was that great. The split stories was cool, Trevor was hilarious, but overall I thought Vice City or San Andreas had better stories.

San Andreas was so good. So many checklist items that I really enjoyed tracking down. I remember loving sneaking into other gang territory and spray painting over their tags. GTA V is really great, and technically it's a total marvel, but I'm eager to see Rockstar do a period piece in a GTA game again instead of it being present day. The music in Vice City and San Andreas are some of the best 80's and 90's collections ever.
