Anyone that is a fellow fantasy/sci fi nerd, would love to swap recommendations.

My top recommendations:
Bound and the Broken Series by Ryan Cahill
All of Brandon Sandersons works
Bloodsworn Trilogy by John Gwynne
James Islington works

Suneater saga gonna be my next endeavor i believe

Malazan Book of the Fallen from Steven Erikson will change your life if you let it.

One of the more challenging, but THE most rewarding fantasy series I’ve read.

Read the main 10 by Erikson, then can re-read or partake in the peripheral stuff at your leisure. There are some prequels, some novellas, some post-series add-ons, and a separate set of prequels and concurrent-to-the-main series novels by another author that created the world alongside Erikson.

I just finished Huckleberry Finn again last week and then read James (by Percival Everett) which is the same story told from the perspective of Jim and has a bit of Django Unchained about it. Both these are brilliant.

Recently read The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Very good stuff and can see why people were stumbling over themselves to adapt it with Anthony Hopkins back in the 90s. Now I’m on The Twenty Days of Turin, an Italian novel that was recommended by a friend recently. Very odd and prescient as it in a way predicted social media back in the 60s/70s.

Co-sign. Best fantasy series ever IMO. Was floored by the Chain of Dogs.

The Hobbit reads like one long bedtime story (which is basically how Tolkien wrote it).

There is so much cool, nerdy, more lore-heavy stuff in the trilogy that should be of interest to someone who likes the extended versions of the film… but even the extended version of Return of the King doesn’t touch on much of Aragorn’s actual journey from the books, from what I remember.
Agreed on both counts. I am no longer curious why people hated he Hobbit movies so much; 1) they dragged the movies out into 3 parts and probably should've been 1, maybe 2. 2) they really made Thorin out to be an asshole in the movies, he didn't really come off that way in the book much, if at all.

I am okay with some of the liberties they took in the trilogy for the film adaptation. For one, I actually thought Aragorn was a lot more boastful/braggy about him being the heir to the throne and preferred his humility in the movies. One part that I was a little sad they skimmed through in the movies was the House of Healing; it was a pretty significant part of the book where the people of Gondor actually saw the prophecy of him as Isildur's heir as he was healing people after the battle.

Only way I watch the trilogy is extended. To this day, I have no idea why they left the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gate out of the theatrical version. So epic.

Have you read the Dark Tower series by SK yet? Man, it is a long journey but so worth it. Not his usual horror stuff at all. More of a western/sci-fi epic.

I've been reading:

Hyperion
The Business of Kayfabe
The Practicing Stoic
An old college textbook about Minnesota history

I also just finished reading The Gipper. It's interesting to find out that George Gipp was a gambling degenerate lol. It also formed my opinion on NIL and the "new" trend of universities paying for college athletes.

Him and Paul Hornung alike.

Hornung would go out drinking/partying/gambling the night before games as a GBP haha. Different era.

Hey if anybody wants something new over the doldrums of the offseason, I published a book right before the season started. Fantasy with a bit of sci-fi flair. First in a trilogy.

It’s called The Last Eye of Time, can find it on Amazon or Goodreads or wherever, or DM me for links.

Looks like you're getting some really solid reviews! Congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. Count me in, I'll check it out.

Super less serious and lots of fun is an audiobook my friend introduced me to Dungeon Crawler Carl. I can’t go 10 minutes without cracking up listening. Not everyone’s type of book but if your looking for fun try it out.
Was just going to recommend this. Maybe the best “audio” of any audiobook I’ve listened too. Very entertaining and no small amount of emotional depth.

Hyperion took an emotional toll on me. One of my favorites, but the style and the stories drained me.

I've decided to read all the classics that I never got around to reading or it's been so long since I read them that I've forgotten everything other than the basic plotline. I recently finished Dickens' Great Expectations and am now about halfway through Dostoyevsky's Anna Karenina. I've always liked Dostoyevsky. He had great character development and understood human psychology and motivations and weaknesses like no one else.

Ripped through Crossroads by Jonathan Franzen in 3 days last week. Great read.

Read the Corrections some years back, which was also fantastic.

Ordered Freedom, gonna dive into that next.

Need something to fill the Bowl Season void.

Did the audiobook last month. Crazy how completely I hear the Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco monologues even when someone else is reading the story.

Just finished Roddy Bottum's book. As a huge faith no more fan, it was really a really good read and went over his struggles as a gay man in the 80s/90s rock scene.
I knew Courtney Love sang for them but never realized she was such good friends with Roddy. Courtney, Kurt, and Roddy were supposed to go to rehab together, but only Roddy showed up. Half way through, Kurt convinced Roddy to stay and try months later, Kurt was gone. 😢

Very nice. There's a reason the classics stay classics. Dickens is an author I've barely scratched

Just finished Crime and Punishment (not bad...honestly great, I'll read it again shortly) and now onto Lonesome Dove.
I only read classics now - plus maybe John Grisham or that fella who does the Lincoln Lawyer, I keep forgetting his name. Also I want to read Arnie's bi/autobiography Total Recall.

Edit: I think the most overrated book/story of all time is The Great Gatsby. I don't understand its popularity at all.

Michael Connelly did the Lincoln lawyer. Great book.

Tolstoy wrote Anna Karenina.

Rasputin beat me to it. I really liked "Anna Karenina" and my reading of it coincided with a failed relationship so the emotional weight of Tolstoy's righting struck a nerve. I'm a bigger fan of Dostoyevsky's work but "Anna Karenina" was a great read.

Over a month ago, I finished The Count of Monte Cristo and it was excellent. I couldn't put it down.

I just finished, "Lonesome Dove" and it was also excellent. An incredible story that was a great complement after finishing, "Empire of the Summer Moon" (which was all about Comancheria).

Now, I'm moving through "Hail Mary" which is a very different but enjoyable book so far. I have about 1/4 remaining.

If y'all enjoyed Lonesome Dove, check out the follow-up Streets of Laredo. It deals with some of the aftermath and has some great moments. If you're looking for another western that is a bit more literature heavy, consider The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy

Finally getting around to the Godfather, I’ll probably finished it today, really good, better than I expected but a down note mention is I also didn’t expect Puzo to be so sexually graphic, the rest is good and you really get more of the development of Michael and Tom. Didn’t expect Johnny to play such a bigger role either

One of my favorite books of all time. So much better than movies and like you mentioned they really flesh the character development and Johnny as well. Really gives a better understanding to everything happening in Vegas that gets skipped over in the movies.

I picked up the Family Corleone to keep this rolling,… have you read any of the other books?

I've read them all. The Godfather's revenge, and return by Mark Winegardner are pretty good and I enjoyed how he continues to tell the Corleone family stories in other cities. I enjoyed them all but none are quite like the original. Mostly because Mario didn't write them. Check out the Sicilian, The last Don, and Omerta by Puzo tho. It's been awhile since reading them all but if I recall correctly, I enjoyed those more than the Godfather spin-offs. The Sicilian is loosely in the same Corleone universe and had a movie made of it with John Turturro so you might already be familiar with it.

My favorite book of all time. I finally got around to reading the unabridged version last year, as well. For how long it is, it's still a page turner.

My English teacher finally gave in and let my class read the abridged version my Jr. year or high school. I get why, because I can see a bunch of 16 year olds not reading it and just sparknoting it, but in hindsight, I think his initial instincts were correct; should've stuck with the unabridged. So. Damn. Good.
