What book(s) are you reading?

Has anyone read either of the following? Looking to pick up a fantasy/adventure, which would be a first for me.

"The Name in the Wind" (Patrick Rothfuss) or "The Way of Kings" (Brandon Sanderson), or "An Ember in the Ashes" (Sabaa Tahir).

"The Name of the Wind" is very good if you are looking to get into fantasy, it's getting more hate recently because people are realizing it's very tropey, but that wouldn't likely bother you and its very well written. I would also recommend The First Law trilogy (First book is called "The Blade Itself") if you want a more gritty fantasy. Stay away from Wheel of Time or Malazan Book of the Fallen series if you are new to the genre. They definitely are not training wheel books.

If you are in the mood for a very easy but well constructed young adult fantasy novel, I'd recommend the Bartimaeus Trilogy (some comedy) or the Mistborn trilogy (the most Sanderson of Sanderson books)

I have not read, and am hesitant to give it a chance since Rothfuss is starting to sound like GRRM in terms of actually finishing the series.

I'm currently re-reading Malazan's main series, then I'm going to get into some sci-fi.

You heard of the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons? I read the first book and loved it, but didn't want to start the second book right away because of how emotionally drained I felt.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance. I think the rights were already purchased by a company that does television, but I don't usually pay attention to that stuff until I see a trailer.

Apparently it will be a film and a TV series, with the film being directed by Sam Raimi.

Edit: Apparently Raimi is out as director, and the movie is in limbo.

Currently reading "I'll Be Gone In the Dark," and cannot put it down. I started it Thursday after work and will probably finish tonight or tomorrow. It's a binge worthy, true-crime novel.

Can't wait for HBO to release the docu-series. Michelle McNamara did a phenomenal job researching and writing about the Golden State Killer.

Highly recommend for anyone who likes crime novels, fiction or non-fiction. It's a pretty captivating read. Her writing has an eerie effect of pulling you into the scene.

Joe Abercrombie is great, can’t wait for his next series (and it will pretty much be finished when the first book is released).

Rothfuss is young and went through some mental health issues that he's recovering from. He'll finish it. Honestly I think both books are such treats from a prose standpoint that even if they were never to be finished I'd still be happy I read them both.

Joe Abercrombie is great, can’t wait for his next series (and it will pretty much be finished when the first book is released).

Yeah he's really solid. I'm not as in love with his writing as his plots but he can certainly create a good f'd up world.

Also for as much cringe as Kvothe has, that dude has some fantastic lines. Get your wife/girl some flowers and attach a note saying: "I wanted to show these flowers how beautiful you are." Cheesy as fuck but you will 100% get it.

I just finished Patrick Rothfuss's "The Name of the Wind".

I thoroughly enjoyed it and have purchased the follow up "A Wise Man's Fear".

Kvothe is such a fun character, and the intrigue behind Bast in the last chapter has me eager to start #2.

Thank you guys for your recommendation - my first "fantasy" since Harry Potter series and I love it.

Question - what was the hidden secret under ground? Did I sleep through that part, or was it just that there are millions of disorganized books? Perhaps it's for book #2, but if it was revealed I somehow missed what the big secret was.

Reading "Friday Nigh Lights" by H.G. Bissinger. For those of you who played HS football...he does a great job of bringing back a lot of the feels that went along with playing the sport. Especially the pre-game nerves/butterflies as he describes the locker room before the game.

Figured it was a good time to pick this one up with football season lingering closer and closer by the day.

I loved the first book (The Name of the Wind).

~700 pages through the 2nd (Wise Man's fear) and it was really good up until ~600 when the Fleurian/Fae storyline starts. I really don't understand where he's going or what purpose this segment has, but it's not enjoyable.

Does it get back on track?

It does get back on track....but it is a long painful diversion. Also at this rate he isn’t finishing book 3 anytime soon (but I doubt that he will be able to finish it in 3 books anyways).

It might in 2. Author had some issues in the meantime, but appears to be in a good place now. I'm probably going to reread the series when the release date gets announced.

Looking for a new fantasy to read after finishing the "king killer Chronicles". Which I really enjoyed.

Odds are if it's fantasy I havent read it, so everything's on the table.
