I'm not saying they misrepresented what the show was but I expected it to be more of a gradual movement towards this Pope being corrupt/immoral/atheist. Instead, that's just what he is from the onset which makes the whole thing completely unrealistic IMO. If I find it hard to believe a serious, non sci-fi show is unrealistic, I will lose interest quickly.

Interesting. Why did you assume a story about a young Pope have him gradually becoming corrupt? I would think that the mere premise of a young Pope would allude to him being corrupt. Every preview I saw also explicitly depicted him as a villainous role.

Also, the entire story is supposed to be unrealistic. They never made any claims that it wasn't. In fact, almost every good show coming out nowadays is based in an unrealistic plotline. I mean, did you lose interest in House of Cards?

I don't view House of Cards as unrealistic. Especially not the first season. I think it is really well-written and makes me feel like the rise to power was gradual and realistic. (some exceptions obviously)

HoC is actually a great comparison. Underwood is a bad person and morally/politically corrupt but it's all behind the scenes at first. The whole first episode of The Young Pope I was like lol wut at everything he was doing. Example: he forced the priest who listened to the confessions of those at the Vatican to reveal those confessions.

Have you actually seen the show yet? If not, please watch it and we can continue the discussion after that.

Underwood is corrupt from the very first episode when he and his wife plot to destroy Senator Walker and then strikes a deal for Peter Russo's loyalty. That is a terrible analogy. Underwood is clearly corrupt from the onset and the show clearly has a wide array of completely unrealistic scenarios.

I will watch the show tonight, but I haven't addressed a single comment that needs that to confirm or disprove my comments. I reference how the show was portrayed in trailers and what the reviews have said.

But I'll watch it.

When did I say Underwood wasn't corrupt from the onset? I said his rise to power was gradual and he wasn't openly immoral/an asshole to everyone he met.

We aren't really disagreeing on what the show is about. We are disagreeing on whether it is realistic. And I don't think you can say it is or isn't without watching it.

You said it was a gradual evolution of his character, which it was not, they position him as corrupt from the very first episode.

No, I said:

He was bad at the onset but he wasn't explicit about it to all the other people in the show right from the start.

Underwood is overtly charming and nice to everyone throughout the show. His corruptness and immorality is all behind the scenes.

The Young Pope is a straight asshole to everyone but his one confidant from day 1 of his papacy, which is why I think the show is pretty unrealistic at this point. I want to see how he got elected Pope in the first place so I will keep watching.

I fail to see the difference.

Also, and again, the very premise of a young American pope is unrealistic. So I struggle to understand how that could have been a surprise to you.

I guess I am not sure what the trailers have to do with whether it is a good show or not. Yes, I saw the trailer, but what if I didn't? It seems that you are blaming me for expecting the show to have more depth and not just be House of Cards set in the Vatican. Except it's not even HoC in the Vatican because Underwood had to rise to power. This guy already has it and we are just witnessing him impose his will.

Yes, there is some appeal to watching a guy with power be an asshole but it's going to get old, quick.

Finished S4 of Bosch this AM. Good stuff.

If you have Kodi or some other access to international series, Deep State on FOX UK is fantastic so far. Finished S4 of Shetland a few weeks back as well as the latest season of Hinterland (both BBC). Both are great shows and earlier seasons available on Netflix. Incredible mood and the locations are amazing.

I've been on an international kick the last couple of years since getting Kodi/Exodus. So many incredible shows like Bron/Broen (the original The Bridge), The Tunnel (UK/France version of The Bridge), Forbrydelsen (the original The Killing), Wallander (UK or Sweedish version, and Les Revenants (The Returned) are just a few. MacMafia, a BBC show, was great and is now running on AMC.

Anyone else out there exploring the foreign jewels?

Just saw that Netflix might pick up Designated Survivor.

Not that I think it's a 5 star show, but thought it was pretty good and was surprised that ABC was dropping it. I think I like the "anti DC" and "anti Party" elements of it. Anything Maggie Q is always worth a watch lol. Anyway hope Netflix or someone else picks it up.

I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the first episode. I assumed I wouldn't like it but couldn't help checking out the first 30. They did a great job of flipping the characters and telling both sides.

The Invitation - movie on Netflix - good job of putting the viewer in an uncomfortable, confused state. In a weird way, it adequately captured my distrust of pop culture, ha ha.

Evil Genius was good

The Rain was pretty good but it lost some potency near the end

Does no one watch "Westworld"?

I do, just got done watching E9. Love it, but you have to dedicated to sitting, watching, and understanding. A lot of time shifts, language shifts, back story, etc..

edit/add... also really enjoying HBO's Succession. Great wit. Also watching/enjoying the new seasons of The Affair and I'm Dying Up Hear. Great writing for both.

Yeah, it's cerebral, for sure. I used to miss a lot of details on first viewing. Now I watch it on the computer, so I can actually hear what's going on.

"Kiksuya" is one of my favorite hours of story-telling, ever. That whole scene where he wakes up, goes to cold-storage, and comes back with the lock... friggin broke me. I've only felt that punch to the gut a few times watching TV. Legit tears for a robot, hahaha.

Kiksuya was awesome.
I binged season 1 before the start of S2. I picked up so many things that I missed and gave me a much greater appreciation of the show. I'm often multitasking when watching current episodes, but Kiksuya made me sit down. I think I'll binge S2 after the finale some time, perhaps on vacation in FL in a few months. There's just so much to unpack in some of the episodes.
