Victory 19th Anniversary Session IPA. Just OK. The idea seems out-of-whack. A session beer is supposed to be drunk over a long period of time, from what I understand. But 4.5% abv? It seems like a slow-sipper beer should pack more wallop. Not as well-balanced as other IPAS/DIPAS (e.g. Dirt Wolf) too much piney hop flavor and nothing else besides.

From my understanding what they mean by session is that you can have multiple beers in a session and not get (too) drunk. That is why they are low ABV. Let me see if I can find something on it.

Since June I've been saving a bottle of Founder's Devil Dancer for a rainy day that has finally come about. After seven months, the hops have taken a step back as expected, making it more impish than the Prince of Darkness. Quite the tasty treat!

Some may cry that an aged Triple IPA is a paradise lost. I disagree. You will not find a barleywine or old ale with similar characteristics. Which reminds me, there's a dormant Founder's Doom in the cellar...

That looks wonderful. I might have to get Devil Dancer the next time they release it, this past time I held off because I have not really enjoy any of Founders' IPAs (well the Harvest one was ok but over-priced).

Oddside Ales El Dankerino. It says West Coast Style Double IPA but it also has bowling pins on the bottle. It's drinkable but I wouldn't buy another one. But when you pay a buck and a half for a single and there's bowling pins on the bottle what do you expect?

Too boozy for me .

Love Founders but that was Listerine & Gasoline mixed together .

Even finishing 3 , 120 Minute IPA's poolside was more pleasant .

Alpine Brewing Exponential Hoppiness. They label it a Triple IPA at 11%.

Big notes of orange marmalade on toast, grapefruit, peach, mango and a touch of crackers. Also some floral and pine bitterness. It doesn't taste like 11% but you can taste some alcohol (I would have guessed 8-9%). Overall an Amazing beer. I am glad that I have one more.

I will just add that anyone who drives to San Diego (or even visits San Diego) should find the time to head up to Alpine Brewing, well if they like IPAs.

Damn. Though truth be told, I don't really like the 120 minute IPA and I generally don't like IPAs that aren't west coast style IPAs. Clown Shoes, Oskar Blues, and a few others are the exception to that.

That was my understanding. But the guy I talked to ( I like him, but he is apparently full of defecation) says that session beer is supposed to be savored over a long period, as in, it should not be quaffed quickly. I'd say that the BeerAdvocate article you linked to makes infinitely more sense. Session beers are low abv, low impact, but easy-drinkers that you can make a day of without getting totally sloshed. Victory's 19th has the low abv part down, but I struggled to get through more than 2 in one sitting. They should've made it more of a lager style than a piney IPA. Hell, I could drink more DIPA or Imperial Porter in one sitting.

While I agree with you, sessionable IPAs are all the rage these days. Stone Go-To, Firestone Easy Jack, Founders All Day, Lagunitas DayTime, Green Flash Citra Session, Ballast Point Even Keel, etc. I generally am not a fan but every brewery is putting out a session IPA to appeal to the people who like craft beer, want to drink multiple beers but don't want to drink Domestic beers.

Cheers for the Session reading...

I'm drinking some Celebrator Double with my first home made low country boil.... Good stuff all around.

Bully Boy American Whiskey. Boston-based craft distiller, not sure what their reach is in terms of outside the region, but I have a friend involved there so I was given a bottle. I would say if you find it near you, give it a try. Very good whiskey for the price (about $30).

I find myself really enjoying Founders All Day when I am drinking outside of my own house and have to get my ass home at some point.

... Domestic beers.

But, but, but aren't these all "domestic" beers by definition?

I understand. I appreciate the distinction between "real" beer as opposed to "big box" slop.

I just can't seem to help my obsession with lexicon.

OCD, I suppose.

Forgive me. I know not what I do when I drink after a two week hiatus.

I apologize for the double post, but I kept getting a "... Security Key Missing" (or some such thing) message "explaining" why my response wouldn't post.

3 dollar Texas beers? Not a bad value on Green Room IPA and another Hefe-Weizen they were pushing, but not as good as the Live Oak.

I had the same reaction dshans,...

It's a colloquialism among beer people.

So, fuzzy language is acceptable when couched as a "colloquialism" and not a "term of art?"

No wonder the world is such a mess!

It is part of the industry language as well. Many beer distributors list beers as domestic, import or craft (some also have categories for cider and malt beverage as well). Many industries have their own "language" that is either confusing to outsiders or slightly blurs the meaning of words and/or phrases in comparison to their common usage.

Went to BJ's Brewhouse last night because there was no place my girl could grab a salad at midnight. This was my first time there. Surprisingly the place was packed with diners.

So they are known for their Chicago styled pizzas. The last Domino's I had in the 90's was better than that garbage. They did square cut it in proper fashion but that was the extent of the good news. That being said, the pizza is better than the beer they brew. I had a seasonal IPA called Committed. It's a 9.5%er. Tastes like something Budwiper would produce and slap a Michelob IPA label on. It was thin. No body. No finish. After 2 sips, I looked at the beer menu and thankfully saw Chimay Grand Reserve. I called over the waiter, ordered 2 Chimay's and sent their house swill back.

It's been a while since I've had a Chimay. After my adventures here in Craftafornia over the past 6 months, the Chimay was a delicious change of pace. This used to be my go to starter beer at happy hours. I missed my old friend.

So.... if you are traveling to SoCal and someone suggests BJ's Brewhouse, pull out your phone and look up the nearest Slater's 50-50 and head directly there. Great food and the best choice of beer at a franchise establishment anywhere.

I had a Stone Barrel Aged Ruination and it was amazing. I thought it was going to be kinda weird aging an DIPA but it was unlike any DIPA I have ever had. I wish more breweries would experiment with barrel aged IPAs because I thought it was very good. The price was a huge deterrent though at $18 for a 500ml bottle.
