It is part of the industry language as well. Many beer distributors list beers as domestic, import or craft (some also have categories for cider and malt beverage as well). Many industries have their own "language" that is either confusing to outsiders or slightly blurs the meaning of words and/or phrases in comparison to their common usage.

"Craft Beer" is all the rage so every brewer wants to horn in on it. One of my beer reps told me the term has been legally redefined again, to encompass more of the big boys. It seems that every domestic brew besides Bud, Michelob, Miller, and Coors is considered craft beer now. Sheesh.

Went to BJ's Brewhouse last night because there was no place my girl could grab a salad at midnight. This was my first time there. Surprisingly the place was packed with diners.

So they are known for their Chicago styled pizzas. The last Domino's I had in the 90's was better than that garbage. They did square cut it in proper fashion but that was the extent of the good news. That being said, the pizza is better than the beer they brew. I had a seasonal IPA called Committed. It's a 9.5%er. Tastes like something Budwiper would produce and slap a Michelob IPA label on. It was thin. No body. No finish. After 2 sips, I looked at the beer menu and thankfully saw Chimay Grand Reserve. I called over the waiter, ordered 2 Chimay's and sent their house swill back.

It's been a while since I've had a Chimay. After my adventures here in Craftafornia over the past 6 months, the Chimay was a delicious change of pace. This used to be my go to starter beer at happy hours. I missed my old friend.

So.... if you are traveling to SoCal and someone suggests BJ's Brewhouse, pull out your phone and look up the nearest Slater's 50-50 and head directly there. Great food and the best choice of beer at a franchise establishment anywhere.

.

I've never been to Chicago but for that style pizza out here BJs is my personal favorite, it's really freakin good deep dish imo, honestly, not going to lie, it's some of the best pizza I've ever had period...sorry you didn't like,... Most people I know, even a girl I work with who was born and raised in chi town thinks their deep dish is phenomenal. Agree on the beers though, not a fan of their beers at all,... I go strictly for the food, which is really rather good, some of the best brewery food out there.

I will say though, BJs is so popular now that there's something like 30 plus locations in California, maybe the one near you just sucks... I know the ones in San Bernardino, Rancho and Long Beach are quality.

If ever in the area of Placentia, go here.

... really good for thin crust...

Is it your implication that "thin crust" (As it was, As it is and As it shall always be) is in some bizarro world somehow inferior to that Chicago "filled, open-topped bread?"

Or is it it a matter of my faulty inference?

Don't get me wrong. I like an occasional Chicago Style open faced baked casserole, but it sure as hell ain't PIZZA!

I'll trust you on your beer evaluation.

I haven't been to BJ's in a while (almost 2 years) but the one I went to in Redlands, CA had some guest beers on tap that included Stone Ruination and Green Flash West Coast IPA. I have only had BJ's beer once and it was not very good. I love me some Slater's 50-50. I also think that Eureka Burger is a pretty good option as well, and I would take the YardHouse over BJ's too (especially because of the beer selection).

I have been to Oreganos (and I would bet that Whiskey has as well), it is pretty good pizza (though in my opinion it varies greatly by location, with North Scottsdale and Tempe being the best locations) but the best thing there is their pizza cookie for dessert. If you didn't get that then you missed out.

Yes, thin crust is vastly inferior to deep dish PIZZA, it is known... I really like a pizza that can handle multiple toppings.

For the record, I'm not a fan of traditional NYC style 'pizza' ... It's basically cardboard covered in grease, with no further toppings, no thanks.

I'll take this,

Every. Single. Time.

;)

Now as far as the crazy casserole pizzas go, I've never had anything like that, only seen pictures and it frankly looks disgusting... So I guess I see where you are coming from, I guess when we California's say deep dish we mean something closer to a pan pizza for the mid westerners??

The gauntlet has been thrown, the (Pizza) stone has been cast (Iron)!

I say we take this to a different thread.

I.E., I.E. (Irish Envy, Irish Epicurious) mayhaps.

It's my thread and as a vMogul I would like as many vBucks as I can amass ...

I had a deep from Selma's in RSM that was good, just good. On the 247 ratings system it would have been a .8564 and a mid range 3 star.

If you gave me a free deep from that BJ's place, I would drop it off to the "homeless" panhandler who sits at the corner and rakes all day then goes and jumps into his Bimmer which he parks behind Home Depot. I'm sure Whiskey knows of some scientific formula that proves BJ's is incapable of mixing dough, sauce, cheese and various toppings into a concoction that would produce a pizza, even if the process were attempted an infinite amount of times.

Ptk and whiskey, and other Arizona peps... Been to Oreganos??? Had their pizza over the holidays, really good for thin crust...

Oregano's is another passable pizza joint. Great concept besides the pizza to be honest. The best things about the place are the chicks and the dessert.

This is very true. Thin crust (pronounced tin, the h is silent in Chicagoland) is vastly superior to what non-Chicagoans call Chicago Style. That's why we eat thin crust, which must be cut in squares 99% of the time... not deep's or what is essentially an open calzone. We are only forced to go to Gino's East, a Giordano's or Uno's when folks from out of town must have a Chicago style pizza during their visit.

Slater's is coming to Scottsdale... I'll be the guy in the Chicago Bears tent just outside the front door waiting for opening night. There will be Sculpin on ice if you are in the area at that time.
The one I went to had Green Flash and Stone too but I was good when I saw Chimay Bleue.

PIZOOKIE! Yes. That is the best thing there, that and their Ravioli is the only thing I eat when I'm forced to go there. The location at Shea and Scottsdale Rd is the best location but the waits are silly and there is a Rosati owned, Rosati's on the sw corner of the same intersection that's much better than Oregano's.

When it comes to pizza in the valley, there is only one for me and that's Spinato's. It started as Aurelio's which is my favorite pizza back home. The one at Ancala in Scottsdale is my favorite. Perect pie everytime.

Yard house is definitely THE place for a great beer/food combo... Belhaven Scottish on tap and a nice Poke Salad... Yesir

Real Polk Salad? Get out! I hope they know how to prepare it... one false move and it's over!

Polk?? Or Poke? It's basically a sushi salad made with Ahi, it is really good stuff so I would assume you hate it.

I've never had the sushi version but it looks good. If BJ's makes it, I'm sure I would hate it. If I had it at Roy's, I'm sure I'd love it.

Bootlegger's Knuckle Sandwich DIPA. Holy Shit this is good.

Starts off like a typical DIPA with some Orange, orange rind, pine and sweet malt, and then you get hit by the loads of dried tropical fruit (mango, papaya, pineapple), and the finish is full of pure hop oil bitterness. It is a rollercoaster of tastebud loving.

Not my favorite, but I'm always game to dive into a pizookie. Which, btw, BJs has trademarked, so Oregano's had to change what they call it..

Nello's is my favorite pizza joint in town. Not deep dish, but still Chicago style.

I love Nello's. I grew up in Mesa and went to the Nello's there. Damn, now I feel old. I also grew up on Barro's of which I am no longer a fan.

I finally tried Goose Island Bourbon County Stout last night. I was pretty disappointed. It was what I don't like about regular stouts paired with a really high abv. I had some good Imperial Stouts lately. This wasn't one of them.

I've never tried BJ's pizza, but I'm with you on being unimpressed with their house brews. That's just what you get from big brew pub chains. It's not like Gordon Biersch is any better.

But I do have to defend BJs a bit here. Their roast beef sandwich and shoe string fries are legit, and they always have 12 oz bottles of La Fin du Monde for $5.95. You'll pay that much for a Bud Light at some places. Thus, BJ's tends to be my go-to lunch spot for meeting clients. There are places with better beer lists near my office (The Hungry Monk, Whole Foods, etc.) but the food isn't as good, and it's sometimes hard to tell which of my clients won't be comfortable with day drinking. Damn puritans are still running this country.

My family has gone to church at St. Tim's (just north of Dobson High) for 30+ years. Since Nello's is right around the corner, that's been our "family night out" place forever. Their beer list has improved a lot, too, recently. Split a pitcher of Deschutes' Fresh Squeezed a couple weeks ago with my dad.

My Old Fashioned

What sort of whiskey did you use? I usually use a Tovolo King Cube to prevent my Old Fashioneds from turning into a watery mess so quickly. Or better yet, I stick a bottle of pre-mixed Old Fashioned in the fridge so I can skip the ice entirely.

I went to St. Tim's growing up (from birth till I left for college) as well, as my family lived in Dobson Ranch across the street from the Dobson Ranch library.

I used Traverse City Whiskey Co. I am going to buy one of those large ice cube makers. I also believe those "iceless" cubes would be nice.

Bear Republic Apex Special IPA. A very good IPA, if you like Bear Republic's Racer 5 then this is a good one to get, similar yet even better.

I'll tell you what... I became a banker in the wrong era. Hell, the old timers tell me all of the time about the days when "2 martini lunch's" were only that way because they drank too much bourbon at the office in the morning, and were running late for their client meeting at the strip club.

"banker's hours?"... does that mean every hour in the day? Because i'm working 24/7.

I have to pay for my own coffee and water at my office for crying out loud.

effing puritans...
