Really like Tumbler... honestly, oth than their summer ale I like anything by SN... alot.

Yeah, Sierra Summer was a disappointment. It was my first experience with Sierra Nevada. I probably wouldn't have tried any of their other stuff if it wasn't for the recommendations of some of the drunks, ahem, I mean, enthusiasts on this board.

I would call SN my favorite 'main stream' brewery... and yeah, I don't know what the hell happened on their summer... it's bad, plain and simple.

-Tumbler
-Torpedo
-Celebration Ale
-Standard Pale
-Old Chico

all REALLY good beers.

I thought I'd come in here and share the best beer I've ever had.

Not sure how easy it is to get outside of the Pac NW, but maybe someday....

Boneyard Hop Venom. It's out of Bend, Oregon and it's beautiful.

I mean, just look at it...

It is beautiful.

... Might be a good name for a craft beer ...

"Lush with hops. A weed free malt finish. Well trimmed rye hints and a neatly kempt edging of barley. A subtle sprinkling of wheat fills any bare spots."

"Now made with 99.9% less Bambi scat..."

No. Not at all.

Bambi's "contribution" adds an earthy tone to the taste and a woodsy piquancy to the nose. The finish may strike some as a little sour and bitter from the interplay of certain elements, but the overall experience is heady and satisfying.

Polished off a 22oz Three Philosophers last night while I finished CS Lewis' "The Problem of Pain".

Getting started on some Don de Dieu now. Both of these beers are only $6.50/ bomber at my Whole Foods. I don't want to get into a rut, but when I need to unwind after a long day, it's really hard to pass on such quality at that price point.

Don de Dieu bills itself as a "Triple Wheat", and Beer Advocate categorizes it as a Belgian Strong Pale, but I'd describe it as an amped up Belgian Wit. Damn good stuff, either way.

Don de Dieu is a damn good beer. Unibroue makes some very good beers especially Trois Pistoles and La Terrible.

Were you also wearing a tweed jacket and monocle while harrumphing at the lack of decorum and intellectual standards in modern society?

Big Lewis fan actually, many say that his writings are very similar to a Catholic philosophy though he never would have joined the Catholic faith.

He allegedly was very close to converting several times, but due to his national pride, he felt like he couldn't leave the Anglican church. Though if he was alive today, I doubt he'd have much trouble making the switch.

Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA. A very good and very juicy IPA. Loads of citrus (orange, grapefruit), peaches, and tropical fruits (Mango, papaya, and pineapple).

Not a Lewis fan?

On the contrary, old chap. "The Screwtape Letters" is one of my "trapped on a desert island" books. I just don't drink quite such sophisticatedly pimpin' beer as you do when I read. This beer philistine is just trying to learn from the masters here.

Good stuff. Most nights I settle in with a beer or cocktail and read for 1-2 hours while I wait for my two older boys to fall asleep (if I don't post up near their bedrooms, they don't pass out until an obscenely late hour). I used to spend that time here with you degenerates, but I felt like I could be using that time more productively. So I've been reading as much moral philosophy as I can get my hands on.

My wife has been in India on business over the last week, so the last few days have been rough as the lone parent. I don't normally have multiple bombers of top notch beer in my fridge, but I needed a little alcoholic therapy this week.

And looking back on my post, it probably conveys a lot more chin-stroking than I had intended. I only mentioned it because we've discussed theodicy here before ("God. Is He truly good?"), and Lewis' "The Problem of Pain" is the best defense of theodicy I've ever read. It comes highly recommend it for anyone interested in the subject.

It is a very nice beer. If you enjoyed the Three Philosophers, then you should try Rochefort 10 or St. Bernardus Abt. 12 if you can find them.

I appreciated the chin-stroking aspect. I haven't heard of "The Problem of Pain" but I will add it to my reading list, as I will add the accompanying beer to my drinking list. If the best stuff was written while drinking, I'm sure it's best enjoyed while a bit sauced.

Right now, I'm drinking Scuttlebutt Porter. I'm not reading anything transcendent, just watching the MSU-W. Michigan replay. The porter is pretty decent, but not any better than the Sierra Nevada Porter I've been buying lately.

Vacation with the family last week in Northern MI. Went to a couple of breweries while we were up there: North Peak in Traverse City, Right Brain in Traverse City and Shorts Brewing Co in Bellaire MI. Great beers and great breweries. If you're ever up there, I'd recommend you seek them out.

Tonight, trying a Belgian beer called Saison Dupont.
