Summit Extra Pale Ale out of St. Paul, MN

One of the truly great breweries...way ahead of their time. They had an English Style IPA way back in the day and the EPA was the hoppiest thing around for a decade before the West Coast IPA craze. Now they added the Saga IPA, which is an excellent West Coast style IPA.

Did you forget to add cranberry juice? ;)

No, I wasn't on my period at the time...

anyway, the wife talked me into going and getting some beer last night...

I went with Longboard KoKo Brown... a Brown Ale with Coconut... decent enough...

A local brewer's Double IPA, D.R.I.P.A. by Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. Terrific beer.

Figured I would catch up on my 1 drink from last night. I drank a Brother Ben from a local brewery called Greenbush. It is a 10% Imperial IPA brewed with honey. I am not a fan of IPA's but this is just a spectacular beer. Unlike most high ABV beers, you cannot taste the alcohol at all. My girlfriend absolutely hates IPA's with a passion and she loves this stuff. My sister just got a job at Greenbush about 2 months ago and needless to say I have been enjoying the perks of having her working at a brewery. I usually get a growler and a 12 pack every few weeks that she just randomly brings me. I think she should keep this job for a long long time.

I'm dropping my wife's car off to get some work done today. The estimate will determine what, and how much, I'll be drinking later on.

I didn't wait to get the estimate. While I was waiting I had lunch at Iron Hill Brewery. They have 7-8 locations in north Delaware & south PA. They brew their own stuff strictly for on premise draft consumption. I decided to live large and have a beer sampler, which gave me 8 four ounce draft samplers. Even though I'm not a beer guy, I liked everything I drank, to one degree or another. There were a few I probably wouldn't get again, but there wasn't anything I had to reject because I hated it. Here's the quick rundown: Light Lager, Vienna Red, Pig Iron Porter (I did 2 of these because I really like porter), Seasonal Belgian Ale, Hefeweizen, English Brown Sugar, & Raspberry Wheat.

New Belgium Rolle Bolle Summer Seasonal.

N: A slight lager smell, with some slight yeast, and a smell that makes me think of pineapple flavored water. Some pale malts as well, and some crackers as well.
P: Tastes is light with some pale malts (crackers with a touch of salt), yeast, bread dough, some white pepper, and some light fruit notesthat remind me of unripe fruit (slightly bitter).
F: Pale malts, yeast, bitter herbal hops and some not quite ripe fruit.

I don't think I will be buying again, and I am glad that I got only one bottle of this beer.

Let me change that to will not buy again. As it warms up it gets a rather rough soapy note on the palate. Not good.

Speakeasy Big Daddy IPA

Lots of grassy and herbal notes. Some citrus, malt and toffee. Not a great IPA but drinkable.

Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale. Slight baby puke smell on the nose, with some smoked oak, maple, vanilla, and malt. Some hops but they are in the background. Everything but the baby puke carries over to the palate.

I take it that's a negative.

Just finished a bomber of Delirium Tremens with a buddy. Now sipping on a Sidecar while playing Arkham City.

Stone Ruinten. Holy ****. If you see it buy it as long as you like hops. Loads of hops.

N: Tropical and citrus fruits. some pine underneath.
P: Grapefruit and pine. Loads of it. It scrubs your tongue and leaves bitterness all over it. Then some tropical fruits and citrus.
F: Bitter. Did I mention bitter? Some grapefruit and pine. Lots of grapefruit rind.

Damn this is amazing as long as you like hops and loads of them. This is a remake of the Stone Ruination 10th anniversary edition from last year. It will now be an annual release going forward. Find it and buy it.

Found this beer last week and just got around to drinking it tonight...you weren't kidding about the hops! Holy F! I thought I liked hops and bitter but this is ridiculous.

Also, had Weihenstephaner at dinner. Real good beer. Felt like a total douche b/c I had no idea how to pronounce it.

90 degree day by the pool, and all I had to drink was 3Floyds Apocalypse Cow IPA since it was a Sunday (Indiana as a state is still very much like the town portrayed in "Footloose"). As Ron Burgundy would say, IPA was a bad choice.....based on the circumstances.

Last night it was Sierra Nevada Kellerweis and Allagash White.
Tonight it is Boulevard Tank 7. Big notes of lemon, banana, clove, pepper, grapefruit and wheat. A very nice summer beer.

I was drinking Hacker-Pschorr Weissen last night. The store I went to didn't have the 2 other Hefeweizens I was interested in trying so I got that. It was pretty good, smooth but a little spicy.

(I would not have typed those sentences a year ago. This place is turning me into a beer snob. Way to go, guys. Sheesh.)

It's tough to go wrong with any of the imported weizens. Which others are you interested in trying?

Expanding your horizons doesn't make you a snob! That's BMC propaganda talking.

Alesmith YuleSmith (summer release) for local brew Tuesday.

A very good DIPA. Lots of grapefruit, orange, tangerine, mango and tons of pine. Some cracker flavors that try to give balance but fail miserably.

Yeah, I know. It's just that a year or two ago, going into a liquor store and looking at the beer section was like putting the sunglasses on in "They Live." All the differences were lost on me; everything just said "Beer" in black & white. Now I'm splitting hairs over Hefeweizen. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Weihenstephaner was a top recommendation that I came across and I picked it up at a different store yesterday. It was a little less spicy, and more easy drinking than Hacker-Pschorr. But I'd gladly pick up a sixer of either in the future.

Weihenstephaner is my favorite; doubt you'll find better. Whatever yeast strain the Germans use makes a big difference; most American wheat ales pale in comparison.

If you like the style (it's one of my favorites), be sure to try a few weizenbocks. Weihenstephaner Vitus and Schneider Weisse Tap 6 Unser Aventinus are both amazing.

Have a good time in Austin. Fun city, and definitely kill the hangover tomorrow morning with breakfast at Juan in a Million. Great place.
