Tried my first sour today over lunch. BJ's now has an impressive selection of Belgian bottles, and Petrus Oud Bruin was only $5.50.

No me gusta. What say you pkt... is Petrus a weak example of the style? Should I just try to get my hands on some Cantillon? Or chalk it up as a valuable lesson learned and move on?

It is a rather weak example of a sour. Though if you found it too sour then I would probably suggest moving on as it is barely sour in comparison to the best sours out there. What did you dislike about the Petrus?

I wouldn't say it was "too sour", as I enjoy some very sour foods and candies; it just struck me as a really strident flavor to put in a beer.

Since Cantillon is nearly impossible to come by, what would you recommend as a make-or-break test for whether I like sours that's available in TotalWine? Petrus has generally poor ratings on Beer Advocate, so I'm not willing to close the book on the style yet.

Lindeman's Cuvee Rene. It is readily available (I don't know exactly where you live so I checked Total Wine in Gilbert and they had a 12oz bottle for $7). It is tart and sour but not over the top and it is enjoyable.

That is sick and wrong.

Why??... That beer tastes like fruit punch, but is very strong... Hence it's a creeper...

Being the baseball history guy I am... We named it after Satchel's fast ball

Lets just say I am not a fan. I find it rather wretched. Give me a PBR, Tecate, Miller High Life, etc first. :swordfigh

Which part? They are NOT mutually exclusive, regardless of your sick and wrong opinion.

Well, maybe. Kinda. Sorta. Eh ... it's all a matter of opinion. I 'spose. If you insist ...

Oh, fugg.

Russian Standard Platinum last night. Again, chilled and straight up. Veddy smooth and veddy nice. Still just a hint of bite given that it's a grain spirit rather than corn. But it's a quality bite. Good, good stuff.

This is a Barleywine style beer aged for 6 months in bourbon and rye whisky barrels. Lots of vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel and toffee. Some hops and bready malt in the background as well. 12.4% abv and they were supposed to pour me 8oz but since it was a new bartender she poured me 16oz. Just a great beer if you enjoy this type of beer and I am glad that I got to try it.

Now after dinner some Rogue Brutal IPA. It does not live up to it's name though. Enjoyable but by no means brutal. Lots of grapefruit and orange with some nice malt. Not very bitter or brutal.

Good stuff, thanks. Going to have to look for that one!

A beer called Dan's Pink Skirt by Shorts Brewing Company for me. A very bitter IPA (159 IBU) but very good.

I just read the reviews on that. Sounds amazing. I love me some hop bombs.

Dinner with the fam, so tab's not on me haha. I'm a fan of Hoegaarden/Peroni, and any mixed drink really. Probably want to do something fun for the first one tho...

When I'm in the market for a pre-meal liquor drink, I often go with a a gimlet, just gin and Rose's lime juice, in a rocks glass. Nice and sweet without feeling girly (haha) and packs a wallop.

I'm also a bourbon fan ... another good pre-dinner cocktail is your favorite bourbon with Luxardo cherry liqueur. Same reasoning.

So you need something that can be ordered at a restaurant in South Bend? That's going to make this considerably more difficult.

Whatever you do, DO NOT try to do 21 shots. Back in my glory days at Purdue, a good friend of mine attempted it on his 21st birthday at Harry's. We had a piece of paper with 21 lines on it and had him sign his name after each shot. By the end, it was basically a squiggly line LOL. And, me and 3 other guys ended up carrying him out of the bar horizontally like we were carrying a battering ram so he could puke out in the alley.

But don't let me discourage you if you've got the gumption to do it. Just remember, ^^^this could be you.

Happy Birthday to the IE Man on the Street!

What is your definition of a fun drink?

I would say something like Macallan 18 or a nice dry or dirty martini.

By the way happy birthday.
