Right now I'm on a coffee break between the bottle of Italian wine I drank last night and the several vodka martinis my wife and I will consume later today.

Very sad they got purchased by AB-InBev. Quality has been slipping ever since.

I was in Belgium for a week in December and did nothing but drink beeer i was in heaven..true what you say about the quality though its definitely not as good as it used to, i feel like when i drink Hg its just for nostalgia now

Anybody tried John L. Sullivan Irish whiskey? It's a half malt, half grain whiskey. I've had a pretty good track record with Irish, but I'm reluctant to drop $40 on something I've never heard of. It's not carried at any of my local bars so I can't have a glass to taste and evaluate.

It's not bad, but you can do better for the price. I'd sooner pick up a bottle of Connemara Peated, Michael Collins 10y, or Redbreast 12y.

I've been meaning to give Sours a try. Try some of those and/or gimme some recommendations.

I have tried a couple already and now I have Cuvee Des Jacobins, Monk's Café Flemish Sour Ale and Duchesse De Bourgogne.

I will post some thoughts over the next week or so along with my thoughts of the other sours I have tasted before (a hint if you ever get the chance to try the Russian River Sours do it, they are flat out amazing).

Thanks for the info, but let me qualify my taste a bit. I think Connemara is just shamrock Scotch, Collins blended is a bit better then average, and Red Breast is the absolute tits. Does Sullivan's have a peat bite (don't like) or does it have the oily, complex feel of Red Breast (really like)? I figure Red Breast is hard to beat at that price range (I'm in the biz and can get RB for $41 wholesale). Thoughts?

I just realized there are two types of John L. Sullivan; apparently I tried to cheaper of the two.

Since you anticipate spending ~$40 on it, you must be referring to the "10 Count" bottle. Just checked a few reviews and it sounds like it would compare favorably to Red Breast. Probably worth looking into.

Yeah, "10 Count" is what I was looking at. I can take a run at it. Hey, you only live once.

Avery Maharaja Imperial IPA

Had a sixtel of this last summer . World class IPA , just make sure you check the batch month to the right of the red A . Some packies leave it on the shelf for way too long , and the hop profile fades . Drink it fresh , within 90 days . Nice glass too .

Went with the Green Flash "Palate Wrecker" last night. It's one of the more powerful IPAs on the planet.

Have made special trips to get Pliny the Elder. Absolutely amazing. Only available on the west coast and, strangely, Philadelphia.

Not the strangest thing you'll see if Philadelphia, though. I once saw a homeless guy on a street corner airing out his junk. He wasn't relieving himself or anything, he was just hanging out. I wasn't in the mood to eat the sub I just bought after that for some reason.

Off topic but - I enjoyed a wonderful smoke tonight. Got some new Borkum Riff for my pipe a couple days ago and it's delicious!

That's what got me into it several years ago. My grandpa smoked a pipe and he always smelled of the smoke and I used to love sitting next to him because of it.

Sierra Nevada Kellerweis Hefeweizen. One of the best hefeweizens I have had. banana bread, bananas, cloves, some pears and apple peel with a touch of lemon.

Damn this is good.

Been drinking a lot of Oskar Blues G'Knight Imperial Red, seems like that's been mentioned.

For those in the Chicago area - how did we go 16 pages without mentioning the best?

Pretty much anything from Three Floyd's Brewery. My faves:

Zombie Dust:

Alpha King:

Gumballhead:

All of them outstanding, and I love their brewery. In Munster, IN, only like 30-45 minutes from Chicago.

That would be me mentioning the Oskar Blues G'Knight Imperial Red, as it is a great beer and I seem to have a 4 pack in my fridge most weeks. Those Three Floyds beers look very good.

Alpha King is my fave with Gumballhead right behind it. My wife is from Munster so I was introduce to Three Floyd's through her. Damn good.

Sadly, I was a beverage philistine during my 7 years in South Bend, so I never got to try 3Floyds when I had the chance.

And now that I'd like to, they don't distribute to my state.
