Oligopolies are actually ENCOURAGED by regulation, because business becomes all about cronyism and searching for loopholes. Creating a product or service that people need, want, or desire is secondary.

There is a lot of truth to this.

I am no fan of crony capitalism, corporatism, fascism, or whatever else you wanna call it.

However far to often the oligopolies predate the oligopoly favoring regulations from hostage taking.

Corporations offer to bring in some many jobs in exchange for some tax break.

It happens a lot at the state level. You got Rick Perry giving away also sorts of special interest tax breaks down in Texas. I know Boeing recently moved from Seattle to Chicago promising to bring X amount of jobs to the area in return because they got promise special tax privileges and regulations.

You can say we should stand up to them and I agree but in this day and age where people are expecting results immediately it isn't easy to turn down those jobs and see them go to another state or another country.

I can't say I'm for taxing unhealthy foods as much as I think we should eliminate many of the subsidies for corn, soybean, etc, and switch them to healthier organic foods. Spinach and kale should be ridiculously cheap, the processed crap shouldn't be.

Why subsidize any of it? Besides, you couldn't pay me to eat kale. Moochelle's lunch program only proved that if you give kids a bunch of salads for lunch.... they will throw it away.

Once it's legalized, there could be an IE-sponsored "Group Smoke" as part of an ND football weekend in South Bend.

How many IE posters smoke pot?

I can't say that I do, but I did in adolescence/college and when I lived in Colorado. Actually, I didn't smoke, I ate it in various forms. Far more enjoyable and I didn't hurt my lungs. Now, it's illegal where I live so I choose to abide by the law, no matter how unreasonable they seem to be.

As an aside: I see no reason it shouldn't be used as long as it's not abused. If it were legal in MO, I'd use marijuana butter or olive oil in baked goods or have a marijuana sucker after work.

But I understand it can be difficult for different generations to accept something that has always been outlawed in their lifetime. When lines are drawn and something is demonized, it's easy to get swept up in it. Some people still believe alcohol is "of the devil", forgetting that their religious zeal is diametrically opposed by Jesus' miracle at Cana.

Prohibition occurs with right intentions and wrong directives. We don't want people to over consume anything, we can't enforce people to live morally so these types of rules always fail.

Dshans let's light up one day and talk about our differences.

For any and all powers-that-be who are listening or reading:

I am not now, nor have I ever been, a degenerate, pot smoking, child molesting, cognac drinking, law breaking hippie freak. I loves me all things 'murican.

I drink PBR.

And I don't litter.

I have developed a pretty nasty allergy to smoke... any kind. Even when I did partake I never liked the 'high' of weed... never felt in control and the stuff made me far too edgy...

And I thought nothing got done in Washington already. Now Congress is going to just sit around and watch cartoons all day.

It's legal in D.C now. Basically anything less then an ounce and you're good. Can't smoke it in public or anything like that but you can have it. That also includes paraphernalia in regards to an ounce. Still can't have any amount on federal property though.

Is there any certifying body for cannabis that anyone is aware of? Something similar to Oregon Tilth but for cannabis?

I used to think pot was just for hippies, degenerates, and so forth...basically like a small number of people. It wasn't until a few years ago that I started finding out how many people in my family were either actively smoking or smoked in the past. I was somewhat surprised to find out my dad used to smoke, I never saw that coming, he just didn't seem like the type. Now that I'm not so naive, I've come to accept that it's not all that bad, and far more people smoke or used to smoke than I thought. I'm definitely in the camp that believes it should be legal, regulated, and taxed. Based on the number of people that are likely smoking, I can't see why the government doesn't just legalize it and tax it.
