Doesn't make a difference, in my opinion. Position coaches generally stay on the sidelines to give guidance, communicate adjustments and give players an emotional lift. They spend more time with their players, have a better understanding of what drives them/how to coach them and are generally better motivators than coordinators.

If this is true then is it better to have an energetic DC up on the box or down with the position coaches and players?

Depends. If a coordinator can get the job done from the sideline or the press box, I think he should be on the sideline. I just doubt you can do as good of a job from the sideline. It's easier to spot weaknesses, alignment and tendencies from the box.

I wouldn't sacrifice the advantages gained from being in the booth for an emotional boost on the sidelines. I just don't think it matters much at the end of the day. Players get jacked up for games and like I said, if they need a swift kick in the ass, their position coach is usually their to get the job done.

BVG has coached on the sideline most of his career as a defensive coordinator. He likes it better. His first statement was it depends on the teams needs. In his interview this spring he said it looks like he will be on the sideline.

ND has a number of guys to put upstairs including Coaches Elliott an Coach Cooks.

What do you suppose drives BVG to be a sideline coach and Diaco to go upstairs? Is it a need to be in the action and have hands on control? Did Diaco believe that it was more important to read the O and trust his position coaches?

IDK why Diaco stayed in the booth. It gives a better view of the field and what's going on, but he was below average at in game adjustments IMO, so I don't see the point.

Great point, great post.

Maybe it is just style.

The only reason i can think of wanting to be in the box is seeing the field so you can make adjustments. Seems like most DCs played the game at one time and would still want to be down on the field. A DC can have assistant coaches in his ear from the box. I like the idea of the DC being on the sidelines.

While not much changed fundamentally in Diaco's overall or in-game defense, I think it was pretty well documented on here (Whiskey?) how well Diaco's defense did in 2nd halves (minus Navy, twice) throughout his tenure. The staff was adjusting to something-- you don't make yards-allowed improvements like that without doing something right.

There were a lot of things I didn't like about Diaco, but his 2nd half defense wasn't one of them.

Going off this board you'd think Diaco's defenses gave up 50ppg.

Put me on record as saying that I generally loved his in-game adjustments and would take Diaco overall 9/10 times.

I was and still am a strong Diaco supporter. It is just interesting to see the different DCs and the way they go about coaching. I was very sad to see Diaco go but I am hoping we got another gem in VanGorder. There is no doubt about it thier styles are not the same. But that does not make one good and the other bad. I would expect to see players let loose a lot more under BVG. If the players play to or above thier potential it should be an interesting year.

The tenth time being BVG over Diaco?

Anybody know if he will be on the field or in the box?

In one of his first two interviews he said he wasn't sure, preferred the field, but he wasn't sure how it would shake out at ND. By the end of spring he clearly stated that he would be on the field barring some incredibly unforeseen situation.

(I think he finds it easier to have eyes in the sky, and deliver instructions on the field.)

In the Spring Game he was on the field, and not only instructing his defenders, but taunting the quarterbacks. He clearly had an exchange with Golson which made it clear he was pulling out the stops to trick EG, and it was working. BVG explained that he dialed it up way high for Golson.

Which I saw as a multiple advantage. BVG's skill and team comportment. Offensive, defensive, and head coach all on the same page. BVG could take EG around the country with the defensive schemes of our opponents to smooth out the cerebral wrinkles in EG's game. Very big plusses!

BVG has said he will be on the field. I assume Coach Elliott will be up in the box.

LOVE. THE. FIRE.

The dude's attitude is contagious. He's a frickin' viking.

ND has needed this for years. Love having him on the sideline.

It's still way early, but damn I've already forgotten about that other guy....hmmm, sexy hair, how tall was he? Nevermind, love that VG is on the field and firing everybody up!

He's got these guys flying around. So many young guys are getting playing time. So much of playing defense is attitude and passion...he has both and it's contagious. Loved him fist pumping there towards the end of the game.

Dude's a beast... He does have a cheesy porn stache, but he can coach the hell out of the defense. Love it!!!
