He had one year with Auburn in a transitional year (coach and D scheme). I think his time with UGA and the Falcons are a better sample of his ability.

I wouldn't disagree with that. The main point that I thought was relevant was the supposed issue with the spread. Particularly because it fits with my memory of the Falcons -- the Saints run the closest thing to the spread as you'll find in the NFL and Brees pretty much shredded that defense from 2008-2011.

Again, though, we're talking about one data point. I think the bigger picture is much more positive.

I hope VanGorder's history with Kelly means that he will stick around for awhile. This is apparently the 8th time he has been with a program for only one year before leaving.

Or he leaves with BK to go to the Lions...

I'm worried about how he will defend the spread. How was Auburn's defense in 2012? Because during his time at UGA, I doubt they faced many teams running the spread at a high level.

Not a good gauge in my opinion (his one year at Auburn). Coaching and defensive scheme transitional year. I do share your concerns though.

Better hair than Diaco?

My only problem with the hire is having to look at that mustache for the foreseeable future.

IDK what it is, but that guy doesn't look like he fits in at ND lol. From what I hear I love the hire.

I'm really excited about this hire, (providing the rumors are true), but what he did in Georgia were great, I know people question his Auburn year, but watching THAT team, he walked into a dumpster fire......JMO

Talked to a Jets fan about their defense this year and he said this hire makes sense for BK. On more than one occasion BK has mentioned the desire to have the base 3-4 but to be able to change as needed, that is pretty much what the Jets have done all year. My buddy thinks the Jets only played the base 3-4 around 40% of the time, they played a lot of multiple fronts and even played at times with one down lineman and a bunch of LB's and DBs on obvious passing downs do really confuse the OL and QB and break down protections. He thinks this versatility is exactly what BK wanted in a hire and it will be a good fit schematically. The big question is why has this guy bounced around so much lately, but he thinks South Bend could be a good fit for him, he has quite a few kids and maybe the NJ/NY life wasn't a good fit for them and that a smaller town could be more appealing. Just speculation at this point.......anyway, sounds like from a pure X-O perspective, sounds like a good hire, from all the other intangibles, we shall find out.

I hope Kelly stays, but it sounds like he could quietly be putting together a coaching staff that will translate to NFL. Sorry don't want to keep the rumors going.

Definitely has a theme going with the kids names.

Molloy, Morgan, Mack, Montgomery and Malone.

I support this. That team was not going to win a lot of game no matter who was the coach.

Is that Ricky Nelson singing Travelin' Man in the background? One and done eight times in his coaching career. Started his career coaching high school football in Florida. Had success at American Heritage.

I approve of the hire...not that any of the coaches care.

Say it loud and proud, my future beer drinking buddy!

Even though they could care about our "expert" opinion, I do have an observation to make about this hire. Even though Brian's hair is nothing like Harry's, this hire "looks" to have the same feel as Harry Hiestand's hire, to me.

Here is a guy that could have some marginal spots on his resume, that has an unbelievable ability to inspire and motivate kids, see and share a vision, and make sure the work gets done.

And politically, with the talent that Brian Kelly is trying to keep together on the defensive staff, this may be a home run, on that basis alone. Brian V has that much age and experience that the young staffers have something to gain by working with him, and of course Brian VanGorder is the kind of guy that works with you, and you would want to work with, and he can work with a guy as young as Scott Booker, (I know he is "O") and as mature as Bobby Elliott. (BD and BE obviously had a great relationship. BK is proving he can "not fvck with the chemistry." too!

Oh, and PS : Maybe he moves because he has so aspired to be a head coach. I have heard in the business that it is "move it or lose it," when a coach is a hot commodity. So maybe he moved to head coaching position's and though a great DC was not ready to be a great HC (cough, Bob Diaco, maybe) and then back. And maybe he has not always been great at selecting positions, and been tempted by the challenge and the money, (Auburn '12, he had to do it for love of the game, because he would have been the only one that didn't know Gene C was on the way out!)

Like this hire. We could use someone with NFL connections on the staff, and hopefully it helps recruiting the south.

Molloy, Morgan, Mack, Montgomery and Malone.

Samuel Beckett wrote two novels in the early fifties - Molloy, and Malone Dies. I distinctly remember the titles because I was unable to get beyond a few pages.
