We have two beach houses in our family and I spend more time camping in the mountains than I do at Disney, so nice try. Both beach houses and the camper are debt-free. I'm not anti-vacation home by any stretch of the imagination. I'm anti-THIS-particular-plan because of the below...

Except Koon is broke! He shouldn't be buying jack shit houses any place.

It's not like he's sitting on half a mil and looking to park it somewhere. He's looking at second mortgage that he might be able to cash flow (except for the fact that he had never factored in the cost of a management company as evidenced by the fact that he had never even heard of such a thing until it was pointed out to him here). He's a dual-income household that's one layoff away from complete financial ruin and bankruptcy if he goes through with this.

I'll bet my next bonus check that I make more than you and your wife combined. Fight me.

Dragging around a tenement on wheels isn't camping.

A ten foot pop-up is hardly a tenement. It's closer to a heavy-ass tent.

Alas, Mrs. Wiz isn't a fan of sleeping on the ground so "camping" to me means "family camping." At least I was able to convince her that we don't need water and electric hookups and that national and state parks are sufficient. The only "amenities" she insists on are flush toilets and coin-op showers.

When you guys talk camping and such I laugh. I left all my inner city So Cal buddies back home and now all I have is my one brother in law. He's a retired Marine (lieutenant colonel), who is this outdoor expert, survivalist... and I'm here like "Yeah, well I've played Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and sometimes I don't run my air conditioner, so that's what's up."

Camping is just drinking beer and eating hamburgers in the forest. You'd love it.

Ten thousand.

Wisconsin has more lakes than Minnesota - Cliff Claven fact of the day.

And both states have enough mosquitos and black flies to to lift the island of Manhattan. Its amazing how they thrive so well during their two week summer.

WTF - is this site overrun with Canadians or something?

Koon,
You sign the papers for that condo yet? I'm trying to plan a cheap vacation for next week.

Hit the beach in Fort Walton this afternoon. Was looking for a sleeveless dude with a Minnesota map tat on his calf(every minnesota guy has one) and an Irish guy on his shoulder. Didn't see anyone matching that description.

Koon hasn't closed on a property there yet.

No update. This is something that's ~2-3 years down the road, but in doing this, that's not that "far out" considering how much research/prep there would be to do this. I'm also visiting in FL twice in the next 2 months, and one will be to Destin, so I'm hoping to learn a little about that area, as Fort Walton as well as Panama City are locations we'd consider.

Those that have done this and posted in here provided some great "dos" and "don'ts", especially regarding the condo vs. home/townhome, the beach vs. being a street off, the expectation for upkeep, damage, property management value & fees, etc.

So all the noise from the haters aside, I've found this thread helpful for both "pros" and "cons".

KOON IS COMING TO THE PANHANDLE? CAN WE GET BEERS?

Hey I'll be in Destin for 7 days and if you see the leprauchaun tattoo on the shoulder - you better say hello.

But were going with 2 other couples so I cant risk a meet and greet in case someone is a total weirdo.

If it's a ND game in south bend, I'd definitely meet you or someone else, assuming you're not on my list of jabronis (which you're not).

There, there.

You'd be in my top 10 to meet if the situation was different. Possibly top 5 but I'd have to really think on it.
