Meh. Does nothing for me. If there is one position you can count on for LR, it's QB. He has always developed them, always recruited well. So that won't change. It doesn't change the blind spots for him either. For a coach that too often relies on hero QB play when the going gets tough, bringing in a mind that does it even worse is the definition of an echo chamber.

Now, if Kliff joined Michigan, I would feel much differently.

Or if he had hired a top DC, that would be a greater concern

Lincoln Riley can't spell DC if you spot him the D. The Trojans better put up 80 points per game if they expect to do anything. Riley's teams don't play D. They put up about as much resistance as Riley Reid when the pizza delivery guy shows up.

He's going to be an OC somewhere out west in a year. I don't doubt his offensive acumen or his ability to interview for jobs well, which he clearly must be able to do. Apart from that, I'm wondering what Kingsbury is going to analyze for Riley about offense at SC in 2023. They have Caleb Williams.

Apparently KK is burnt out and wants to be in LA for his girlfriend. This is a glorified sabbatical year to exchange ideas with Lincoln Riley while he recharges his battery and figures out where he wants to be long term.

He is basically entering his name into the 2024 Coaching carousel.

he still gets paid by the Cardinals too with this arrangement and it shows he is somewhat serious about football still. If he took a year out everyone would think he was fucking around in Thailand and unmotivated to coach

I was kind of hoping he would disappear for years and then just re-appear one day and defeat the Russians like Bobby Fisher.

Tech gave him $1.95M to go away. His Cardinals contract was through 2027 and guaranteed.

Money is not an issue and he's likely not in any rush to get back into the NFL if the Cardinals are paying him for the next four years if he never coaches again. You'd have to assume his next stop is NFL OC. There really is no reason for him to go back to the college game considering all the changes that have happened since he left it. Although maybe some of them would be to his benefit this time around?

Somebody will hire him, but he should not be and probably isn't in any kind of rush to get back.

I wish I could have made bank like that for failing 😆
I guess when you look at the results, you can call him a failure, but the guy is going on 44 and has basically cashed in for all the money he'll likely ever need. He could still potentially get an NFL OC job or a P5 HC job and wind up doing pretty well.

If we're being fair, The entire Cardinals organization is a cluster. If they are not the most dysfunctional NFL franchise right now, they're top 5 easy. They hire the HC of Texas Tech who'd just been fired with a career record of 35-40. They give said coach a contract extension after year 3. He goes 4-13 after a season full of injuries and they fire him.

KK seems like a good enough guy. It's hard not to wonder if he rode the opportunity of being under Kevin Sumlin with Case Keenum and Johnny Manziel as far as he can go though. I think it was all too much too soon. TT was his first HC job at 33 and he probably wasn't ready. He was TAMU OC for one year and they blew it up, so Tech hired him likely because he was an alum.

Dude is just an interesting guy when it comes to his resume and trajectory.

I would agree, based on the financial gains he has made…..he isn’t a failure. My remark was somewhat tongue in cheek. However, there aren’t too many occupations where you get fired from your position(s) only to be rewarded in your bank account due to your employment contract language but it surely does happen. I, for one, have never had that luxury 😊

It really isn't anything new. Certain guys get multiple bites at the apple in the coaching profession, they're usually white, have worked for Pete Carroll and are on their second wife.

The Cardinals had no business hiring Kingsbury but how do you turn down an NFL job if offered to you, and coming off of being fired by Texas Tech after six years? Money aside, it's hard to find someone with this kind of trajectory. He managed not to win in college and got a pro job where he managed not to win there either. So whatever is next probably defines his career from here.

I really have no idea what to make of him. I think he can coordinate an offense and probably coach QBs but apart from that it is likely too much too soon. I don't think this hurts SC at all but the impact isn't going to be significantly helping them either is it? He and Riley are from the same tree. They'll bounce some ideas off each other and KK will move on in a year.

No doubt, this has been going on ever since guaranteed contracts became common in college and pro sports. KK will have no problem finding a new spot after his USC QB gig. He’d be foolish not to accept big money if it’s offered.

Someone is going to be willing to hire him. Who, what and how much are the questions.

Georgia DL Bear Alexander transferring in. That’s a decent pick up

I can’t remember off the top of my head if it’s the same guy, but isn’t he the UGA player, who would be a starter on UGA this year, who played at like 3 different HS in 4 years, and now is looking to leave (as a starter) the 2 time defending national champ, for a pay day.
So USC met his money demands.

It should be easy for every team in the country to recruit against USC for high school prospects, right?

I'd imagine the pitch would be something like this: "Unless you're an All-American or All-Conference player as a true Freshman they will get the best player in the portal at your position every year and you'll be riding the bench your entire career."
