Wooly, you and I could land recruits at USC. IMO, they sign recruits in spite of him. Last year, if I remember correctly, they got a lot of those verbals before their season fell apart. Once Kiffin showed his true colors they lost that one guy from Placer and Max. His class this year, and I realize it's early, is nothing to write home to mom and dad about.

I can't remember who they interviewed for the job but I can't imagine they couldn't find anybody better than Kiffin.

I could sell ice to eskimos, so of course I would recruit.

Kiffin recruited just as well at Tennessee. Him and Ogeron are proven recruiters.

I don't remember anyone else interviewing for the job.

I think Texas will come calling for CP when they finally decide to cut M. Brown. They should have done that two years ago.

I think this could definitely happen. Petersen has been content to stay at Boise for now, but if anyone could lure him away it's Texas. That school brings in more money than anyone.

That was a typo on my part. The premiums, as referenced in the article, are usually between 8-10k per mill. Meaning Lee's premium is 100 grand since his coverage is 10 mill.

I already assumed that only a select few players (ie. the top ten projected picks, etc) are eligible for such insurance. It's basically a no-brainer to do it since there's no money required up front and you basically "pay back" the premium after you sign your contract....OR have a severe injury or drop beyond a certain pick in the draft and receive the value of said policy. The article used Palmer dropping in the draft, but not dropping far enough to warrant the pay out of his policy.

I was just curious how long this has been going on and why they're making a big deal out of Lee doing it (besides the fact that his policy is for $10 mill, while most others are only $5 mill). I'm also curious what percentage of claims are processed. Usually the house wins. But I'd be curious how many players get the policy and then fall in the draft or get a significant injury and receive the face value. If it's a large amount, the insurance companies would be losing their a$$...so surely they're just pocketing these huge premiums every year.

Good explanation of the insurance policies taken by top NFL prospects:

USC Trojans' Marqise Lee picks up $10M insurance policy, source says - ESPN

Interesting comment at the end on how Barkley passed on "loss of value" policy which he may have been able to collect on given his drop to the forth round.

Looks like Kiffin could be out as soon as tomorrow. If not, they are likely to let him finish the season. If they DO fire him, expect Ed O to take over as interim coach. Most people are hedging towards a stay of execution, but there is a strong chance he could get the axe.

Haden has been preparing for this for awhile and met with Jack Del Rio twice BEFORE the Sun Bowl debacle last year. Hopefully they stay away from Art Briles... that is scary to think about. Of all of the "available" coaches (i.e. exclude Saban, etc.) out there, I think Briles is maybe one of 2 or 3 that'd I'd comfortable taking should Kelly get squashed by a falling Piano. The guy can flat out coach offense just as well as Chip Kelly, even without the Nike money.

Art Briles is the coach of Baylor. He is the ****ing man. That's why I picked Baylor to win the Big 12. I wouldn't even be that surprised if they go undefeated. They play GREAT Oregon-esque offense in a conference that can't play D.

I think Briles is good, but don't think he'd be a homerun at a school outside of Texas/Big XII.

His entire life has been in Texas. He's known to have great relationships with high school coaches there (a lot of that due to the fact he was a high school coach himself), but not sure how well he'd do recruiting CA, NJ, OH, FL, etc.

Sorry, all of that came from staff/insiders on USC 247 board. Big discussion on what all is going down there... was apparently a players only meeting, etc.

Troy is aflame.

I dunno... I'm basing this on nothing at all but watching his teams, but I think he's a better Kevin Sumlin. I think if you gave him the right personnel at a "big time" Big Ten or PAC12 or ACC school he'd wreck face. SEC I'm not so sure.

Remember, he's done it at Baylor with the "leftovers" of Texas, Texas A&M, and TCU. He is really good at identifying talent and has found some stud diamonds in the rough. Kids also seem to love him. I think you put him at ND or Texas or USC and he has the #1 O in the country and the question will be his defense/staff.

This should help ND with Damien Mama (can't think of other USC leans that ND wants).

A coaching change could go either way re: '14 recruiting (not talking specifically Mama). I think it would be a positive for USC's recruiting efforts if they make a solid hire, which everyone thinks they will.

True, but Kiffen killed it in recruiting. Last year, per recruit, he was getting the best players and it wasn't even close.

I think the year before he did awesome too, didn't he? IDK what it is, but recruits seem to like him.

USC will always recruit well, but Kiffen is a great recruiter on top of that. They'll get a better football coach, but recruiter? I doubt it.

He's done a good job recruiting at USC, especially given the sanctions he's had to deal with, but he's also had a winning football program to sell, and, as you said, USC will always recruit well so how much of that was really Kiffin? I'm not trying to make the argument that he's not a good recruiter, but USC isn't the hardest place to recruit for either.

Now that the shine has worn off and he's not selling a winning program (technically 7-6 is winning, but for USC it's not) look at where they are in recruiting...ranked #48 with only 8 commits. I'm sure that will improve as they get more commits, but IF (and that's a big if at this point) he were to return for next season, it's safe to say this year's class will be Kiffin's worst at USC.

A new coach will be able to sell the "return USC to prominence" card we often see new coaches play. What's Kiffin selling? He's not going to be around to see these recruits graduate and any recruit they get between now and the time we learn Kiffin's fate for 2014 will be committing to the school, not the coach.

Interesting fact from Saturday's games

USC had less passing yards than Army, Navy and Air Force. I guess they hit the trifecta.
