Just terrible. Awful thing to happen. USC is in such a terrible area of the city. I wonder what it's like to be a student there, knowing that you can't venture too far off campus and still be safe.

As a city planning guy, I wonder why a school like USC, with its almost endless funds, hasn't bought up a lot of the slums around campus and created a buffer of sorts. It's not like they don't have the wherewithal to do so.

It's all over the news down here. Apparently they think it's probably a car jacking gone bad. Another news anchor said it might have been a crime of passion. Either way, the media sure does like to speculate about this stuff. Very sad that this happened although it's by no means surprising. Terrible location where they've already had four other murders since the year began.

From what I have read they continue to buy and develop the surrounding area as the funds come available. They have been doing so for the past ten or so years IIRC

I work across the street from USC, and I can tell you without a doubt that they are buying all the property they can down here. But you have to realize...there is A LOT of property, and not everyone wants to move. In fact, most people don't want to move.

BUt they have been buying a ton of property. They had to buy a bunch of apartments, a Sizzler and a hotel among other things so they could build the Galen Center (where the team plays awful basketball in front of 3,000 people). They keep buying houses and mom and pop stores around the neighborhood, but again, they can't buy EVERYTHING. And even as they expand, there's still miles and miles of South Central LA gangs between USC and Culver City/Santa Monica.

(I used to ride my bike from my apt in Culver City to my school where I teach near USC every day in the summer, and even though I'd be riding home at 12 in the afternoon, I was still scared sh!tless sometimes going through some of those neighborhoods. I swore a gangster would knock me off my bike and ride away with it. Great exercise, but probably not the smartest thing I ever did in my life!)

Terrible story. Prayers to their families. When i looked at the picture i noticed all the houses have bars on the front windows. That is pretty stark to me since we often forget to lock the front door and even forget to put the garage door down at night. Really makes me think.

Gotcha, thanks for the info, seriously. I know just about nothing about LA; the city doesn't look all that interesting for me due to decades of serious planning errors.

You know that the side of south bend that ND is on is notorious for gun crimes and murders. The alumni has been buying property and fixing up the homes and making most of the are presentable and keeping the riff raff at a distance. I work 1 mile from ND on Eddy Street, but my end is very poor and run down, the Eddy St commons are very nice, people do ok as long as they stay on the end, you come past the 5 way and it's pretty bad.

I think something like 4 kids from ND were shot my brother's freshman year there... thankfully, none died and I don't think the incidents got a lot of coverage.
