It would be like quitting your job before you get severance pay

yeah I guess you're right.. I was kinda looking at it like he got after it in the classroom to please his mom, but he's clearly not in the business of doing that anymore by choosing to leave.. figured his plan was to go to USF for 2 years then head to the league.. but you're right, I think you persuaded me

That is one of the best Ewing Theory stories of all time. And by now everyone knows how I feel about the Ewing Theory and Aaron Lynch.

I wish Simmons would write a Ewing Theory 201 or something.. his first article was in 2004 or 2005, would love to see an updated one with newer examples

Because if he ever needs a degree from anywhere-injury or whatever- which does happen-see Jonas Grey-Dayne Christ, KLM, George Aldridge, he will be one semester closer. BK realizes this and wanted him to finish.

WOW, really?

I'm not getting sucked backed into this. In my eyes, he's gone. That's it. If he comes back it'll be like getting a new recruit to me.

I agree with you again... that is like twice in a two days. So odd to be agreeing with you so much. Lynch is gone, if he comes back, it will be like getting a transfer who is cleared to play like Carlisle, that is the stance I am taking on this. For fun, we should put this back in the recruiting board. :p

How did Sampson go about handicapping the odds of him returning...at 10%? That just sounds ridiculous.

In the meantime, should we get some action going on if he returns on our IE board?

Oh, whatever.
If he comes back, pulls a Floyd and grows up, great. Will be glad to have him. Guy's the most dynamic individual defensive player I've seen wear blue and gold in way too long. A joy to watch.
If not, it'll be OK. Tuitt's pretty exciting too and Kona Schwenke has earned his shot, and we've got depth. Good luck to Mr. Lynch with the Bulls (where he'll face a lot more double teams and play in a lot more ESPN Thursday night specials).
Either way, you don't win and lose games based on one defensive lineman. If it comes to it, Kelly should make the right decision based on the team. So far, that's what he's done.

Games are won and lost in the trenches, BOTH sides of the ball.

^^ of course, but I agree with stlnd01.

1 guy on the line shouldn't cost us, we have depth and perhaps better chemistry.

That being said, if you wanna man up...come on back AL.

This suspicion that he is floating the idea out that he might change his mind so people won't be mean to him is absurd. I'm surprised how many people are endorsing that view. First of all, dangling that out there is going to create more attention focused on him, with people badgering him constantly about whether he has decided what to do. That is opposed to saying nothing further and dealing with maybe a couple yahoos saying something to him, but most people will move on and go about their own business eventually. Second, it doesn't seem like he has really been involved in this later round of lunacy. It's mostly just us going crazy about an ambiguous, one word tweet from his mother. I'm not privy to what Sampson is reporting, but unless he has quotes from Aaron I think it's more likely that Sampson is using this to generate clicks than Aaron using it to buy himself cover. And third, I find it hard to believe a kid would really hatch a plan to send out some faint smoke and enlist the help of his mother and possibly a reporter in order to engineer social conditions that he forecasts would be favorable to his not getting harassed on campus.

The "it's a conspiracy to trick people into not being dicks to him" is one of the craziest, psychofan things I've ever read here.

You have to wonder though, if his girlfriend is the reason he is leaving and pretty much the sole reason, then it is very possible that she is taking some heat from people. She is probably being called selfish and lots of other not so flattering names. It is possible that she could be having a change of heart and is now telling him to stay and so now he is torn because he was homesick and part of him really did want to go home. Or it could be that his mama wants to whip him with a cane for leaving a school like ND for a girlfriend that probably won't be his girlfriend in a year or 2. He may still want to go home but the people around him that he loves the most may be letting their disappointment be known. And most boys do not want to disappoint their mamas. I know that if my son got a scholarship to ND or any other great academic and football school and his girlfriend begged him to come home and he did, his mother and I would not welcome that girl into our home or our family with open arms. Anyone that would be that selfish and think about her own needs over our son's future would not be the woman we would want him to marry. And we wouldn't want him to do that to his girlfriend, either. It's a 2 way street and if he did that to her, then he wouldn't be the man we raised him to be. This, of course, is all based on whether that is the real reason AL is transferring.

What is he?
19?

He's a kid.

When I look back to what I was doing when I was 19... wait, when I was 19, I was living on an M1-A1 tank in the Middle East trying to survive.

He will make rash decisions.

But these should be of the 15 yard variety-not in the form of wavering a commitment ovr the fabled golden pussy.

The girl, if she means enough to him, should be up there to see him. Not vice versa.

Coach Kelly already said he quit the football team. Kelly has to take the side of the team and not towards one player no matter how good he may be. No one player is bigger than the rest of the program. Lynch made his mind up and wants to go back home. The ND football team and family needs to get on with the season. If Lynch is indeed trying to dangle the idea of him coming back, than that's bad on him. He's put the team and program into some sort of roller-coaster ride where he has all control. And no player should EVER have that sort of control.

I think that's a touch hyperbolic, although I understand where you're coming from.

I've said earlier that if he did change his mind, BK would have to absolutely lay the hammer down on him. No more prima donna bull, whether that image was earned or not. He would probably lose his starting job, apologize to the team, be willing to deal with tough questions from the media like a gentleman, and give up any idea that The University would be lenient with any missteps from here on out. (This includes letting him know that his transfer options in the future would be seriously curtailed.)

If he agreed to all of that, I see no reason to not let him change his mind.

However, many posters have already said we have no idea what actually went down with him in the past couple weeks. BK and the team do. I agree.

Sorry, I skimmed through the threads last page thinking something came up I thought was possible. Did the possibility of Lynch staying come about? (Rhetorical)

I wondered, the dude is finishing the semester out, which is super! Not as a football player but as a student. He didn't bail on all the hard work and dedication he had put in so far. I never brought up the idea because it would have been 15 pages of "madness". I am sure someone else brought that thought forward but I have tried hard to ignore the Lynch thing. Either way, I hope he has plenty of time to reflect. His heart may not be in it now but it maybe come summer. He may realize that he will miss playing ball more by transferring then playing 2 more years and leaving. By all means, fine.

I just hope, as a young man, he gets a what the dose of medicine was that hit him. Whether that be him needing to transfer or him finding his medium here. As long as Lynch, the person, learns from his experience, I will support him. We should all take a moment to think about how he has everything a DIV 1 player would want in a school. Education, PT, national exposure and a chance to be ANOTHER ALL AMERICAN. Yet, for some reason he is still unhappy. To me, honestly, he has REAL LIFE ISSUES, that may need to be settled.

AL, wish you the best no matter what that decision may be. Just hope you learn a life lesson outside of ball, from all of this, that leads to a lifelong success.

I hate to admit it, but aaron is was or will be one of my favorite players. I got to speak to him briefly last year. I teased him by saying that I was glad he decided to finally show up at ND. He took in stride with a $hit eating grin and laughed. He definitely was arnery and you could tell a handful for his authorities. However a good kid nonetheless. I just don't want him back if it's just for mom though.
