You're probably right. Sadly, I Cannot speak from experience on the fakes.

You've gone too far.

This company fulfills the MSU offer requirement as well, apparently they installed their field as well.
Source below. Again this is just one study that I read a few weeks back. Took a little bit to find it. It also was notably using injuries from turf back in 2009, so I'm not sure if that is "first generation" or not.
Study Reveals Higher ACL Tear Rates On Artificial Turf vs. Grass Fields | SidelineSportsDoc Blog – The Source For Sideline Injury Management
The researchers found an incidence rate of 1.42 ACL injuries per 10,000 athlete-exposures on artificial playing surfaces and an incidence rate of 1.24 per 10,000 athlete exposures on natural grass. The rate of ACL injury on artificial surfaces was 1.36 times greater than the injury rate on natural grass. Non-contact injuries also occurred more frequently on artificial turf surfaces, according to the findings. Dr. Dragoo said the rate of injury during games was increased by more than 10 times vs. during practice.
On the plus side, Stanford still has grass since they can pull it off on the west coast, and I'm sure theres a few teams in the ACC that still support grass given their climate.

So, per 10,000 athletes, you've got .2 more ACL injuries on Field Turf as oppose to grass. That's nothing, it's not even worth worrying about. As far as the rate of injury being 10 times greater during games as oppose to practice, I suppose that makes sense if the contact is greater in a live game as oppose to maybe 90% in practice most days. Still, you're talking about 6-7 games at home...and even at 10 times the injury rate you're still talking 10ish injuries out of 10,000 athletes. The article points out that the data was strictly taken from injury numbers between 2005-2009. it doesn't evaluate each injury to determine if the field was at fault, or if there were other circumstances (Like a 300 lbs lineman landing on your knee). It goes on further to state that the data doesn't give any specific reason why there's differences between the two surfaces. Finally, the author goes on to state that there may not be a better surface to play on than a perfectly maintained grass field...however, nothing is worse than an improperly maintained field. I think it's safe to say that our field hasn't been properly maintained the last few years.
First, your points are well taken. Again, it was just stuff that I have read, and I'm sure there are tons of competing studies out there. The ACL injury concern is also based on me playing soccer my whole life, getting to the collegiate level and snapping my ACL my second game on turf. So I'm biased.
But as to the bolded, again that was just an article that I posted referencing the study's findings, not the actual study. The article did not post whether they accounted for certain dependent or independent variables, etc.
How much would it cost to Field Turf my lawn? I'm sick of mowing weeds, and I'm tired of trying to fight said weeds importing their way from the nearby field.

I understand what you are saying, but........
modern era? Really? The University made a business decision to replace the sod that they were having to redo multiple times a year. It's not like ND has said, "To hell with doing things right, we'd rather win every game. That way our fans can feel better about themselves as they try to claim some kind of ridiculous superiority over their friends, coworkers, family, and acquaintances, who are fans of some other team."
If it helps with recruiting, that's great. But I don't think anyone should try to characterize this as some kind of fundamental shift in the University's values or priorities.

depending on the kind you get, anywhere from $3/ft up to $10+/ft

Dawg, it's going to be okay. Be easy.
Time.To.Get.With.The.Times.
50 years from now if ND doesn't win a damn championship the 1930s-1980s aren't going to matter anymore. Hell, tradition is already starting to slowly fade.
All I was saying is that Field Turf isn't something that indicates the fundamental change in philosophy that I would associate with a new "era" for an organization.
The weeds will grow through it eventually.
I have a field turf dog run and putting green in my backyard.
