Generic refers to something without a trademark that can be used anywhere. The stripes would fit any end zone, but the end zone design at Northwestern won't fit at ND.
That doesn't have much to do with whether something is generic. No, no one can plop the "Northwestern" end zones onto their football field because, well, they're not "Northwestern." We're talking about the look and feel of the thing, not whether the words "Notre Dame Fighting Irish" are unique/trademarked to the school, because obviously they are. Yes, anyone CAN do simple stripes, but nobody DOES do simple stripes.

I say we install Blue and Gold field turf, and maybe Lou Holtz face at the 50 yd line.

I checked the definition it to make sure I understood it correctly before I posted. You comment about Northwestern validates my point IMO.

Generic- characteristic of or relating to a class or group of things

Team name in block letters in the endzone is EXACTLY "characteristic of or relating to a class or group of things (college football team endzones)". I'm not talking about the LEGAL definition of "not trademarked," holy shit.

Unique- Being the only one of its kind

Notre Dame's simple striped endzone is "the only one of its kind," therefore, "unique".

To recap:
Team name in block letters: generic
Simple striped endzone: unique

This is all beside the point. I like the stripes because they are an extremely simple design which is (to my knowledge) unique to Notre dame at the present.

Spelling out the school name and nickname in the end zones doesn't do anything for me aesthetically and removes the quality of uniqueness - even if use of their specific trademark is denotatively "unique."*

*Or, if you prefer, it will probably look like every Notre Dame high school's end zone design and therefore be more generic than Northwestern.

I may be wrong, but I believe that Heinz Field in Pittsburgh uses the stripes in the end zone. At work and cannot look it up right now.

The Steelers use stripes but they are a bit different from ND's pattern.

Both NFL teams have used the diagonal lines in the recent past.

Before the popularity of painting the field in the 1970's dozens of teams used the lines, too. I can't stand the faux tradition of it all. Let the groundskeepers be creative.

Know what's not "faux" tradition? Grass.

What do you call a groundskeeper when you're not playing on ground? Floorkeeper? Plasticmaster?

If they want the turf to mimic our original field, they need to paint most of it brown for all the dead grass.

I think we should go all Boise on the turf and color the whole field gold with real gold flakes...good luck, defense, seeing our QB.
