I guess NFL-wise, the recent trend has been toward players who've had at least 2 years as a starter. (Barkley, L. Jones, G. Smith, etc. And that's just this year).

So if the NFL is your thing (and if you're the #1 rated high school pocket passer I don't see why it shouldn't be) you're not just trying to get a chance to start for one year. You want a good shot at starting multiple years.

My guess is that he probably didn't figure that EG would become a long-term cornerstone of the offense the way it's shaping out.

As much as I hate to see him leave a place like UK would be a great landing spot. SEC, new coach, virtually no competition, and not that far from home.

UK actually has two pretty decent young QBs... not on Kiel's level, but no pushovers either. They both played last season, and both had decent moments for a bad football team. Whitlow and Towles may be too far ahead in development for Kiel to threaten them at UK. By the time he sits a year and unseats one of those guys, it would be almost the same as waiting for his shot at ND.

Or I could be completely wrong, and Kiel would blow those guys away. However, I've seen them both play, not Kiel, and they both impressed me as freshmen QBs on a pretty bad team.

I haven't heard that release papers have been signed. But I also haven't heard that he's considering staying.

I'm actually curious about the release process. My guess is that we don't sign the release papers until he lines up a scholarship elsewhere. Otherwise, what prevents him from signing with a perennial opponent or whomever he wants? We would lose the power to impose conditions on his release. So if that's how it works it may not be officially official for a while. But I could be wrong.

IF he really is gone, still waiting for anything confirming his departure, I would love to see him go to IU. He would have to sit out a year anyway, so go to IU while they have a stable of QBs right now, then take over the job and start there for 3 years while leading IU to a B1G championship. :)

Kiel update

A source close to the Notre Dame football program said Tuesday there probably won't be any finality in freshman quarterback Gunner Kiel's situation until perhaps Monday, when ND students return from spring break.

The source earlier confirmed Kiel did ask for his release Thursday with the intention of transferring, but that the coaching staff recommended Kiel take spring break to mull over that desire.

It would make sense for Kiel to return and go through spring practice, which kicks off Wednesday and concludes April 20 with the Blue-Gold Game. What could it hurt to go against one of the nation's top defenses every day and get practical experience in running a college offense?

It might remove some red flags as well if Kiel does indeed move on in May.

There still is no indication from Kiel or his family that he might consider the option of coming back to the ND program, even if it's just for a few weeks. The touted prospect from Columbus, Ind., redshirted last season and ran the scout-team offense in practices last fall.

Uh yea, hey Lame. Talking to Max and Eddie now. You don't mind do you. I hear your pops wrote you off. Sorry man. At least you have Layla still. Bob said he's had his fun, but he's just not that into her. So, how are things working out with Hayden? Heard he had dinner with Bob too?

The only reason to transfer is because you know you are not going to be the starter. If the kid who can not beat out our starter wants to transfer to play at the QB position, that's fine with me.

Those type of kids won't be an asset on the bench if they are that impatient and seemingly so unconfident in their abilities that they can not foresee beating out a QB for the next 3 years, especially one that is certainly prone to injury.

Hate to knock the kid, but in terms of this being labeled a disaster: Give me a Tommy Rees supporting Everett and the team over a Gunner looking out for #1 anyday.

We have an electric Sophomore QB who has one loss as a starter coming back along with two veteran, capable backups, and a young dynamic understudy redshirting. We are more than fine.

While I was happy he came, I never thought this was a good fit for him. He's a pro style QB that needs to be in that type of offense. BK wasn't going to change his offense to fit Gunner and EV wasn't going to be unseated. Then you bring in Zaire who is another EG type and it's not hard to figure out. Like most other kids, he wants a shot at the NFL and the more he plays the better his chances of getting a shot. I appreciate him stopping by for a cup of coffee, but I don't think we need to be hard on him.

Agree. Nobody know what the situation is. If they do, they are not communicating. If it's not a fit, it's not a fit. This kid has been torn since day 1. Perhaps he's found some clarity. If so, I wish him well so long as it's not to a cometitor. If he turns into a Jeff George bouncing cry baby, then that's another thing.

Him being #3 shouldn't come as a surprise to Gunner unless Zaire was the #2. No way with him running scout team a lot of the year last year should he have expected to be higher than that BEFORE spring practice.

Not sure if posted anywhere. Although the bulk of the article is not relevant here, one piece is interesting: Keith Arnold is saying a source close to him said Kelly told Gunner he would be #3 heading into spring drills.

Spring Solutions: Quarterback | Inside the Irish

Foolish IMO to communicate something like that, so not sure I'm buying it. I guess in context it might be OK.... If I'm BK, if want GK to be part of the future, I'm telling him "Hey, EG has the leg up obviously, but as with every position, open competitition". Go kill it kid.

If Gunner was surprised by that going into spring than I don't know what to tell him.

Jumping ahead of a senior for the 3rd spot before you even start spring camp sounds like a positive thing to me.

I sincerely hope that isn't the reason for him to bolt. BK is trying to challenge him. I'm confident he could pass TR as the #2 especially before the season started.

Considering the methods Kelly has used on Tommy Rees, and the results he has gotten from a 3* relative "nobody" out of Forest Hills, Ill., I'll give Kelly the benefit of the doubt on how he may have handled Kiel.

Gunner played in a spread offense in hs. He's athletic, mobile, and will beat you with his feet... Not really sure where you're getting he's a pro style qb from

Zaire played 3 years of a heavy run, wing T type of offense I believe. Only in his sr year did his coach open up the playbook to incorporate more passing
..................

Amazing how gunner was a perfect fit when we recruited him, not so great when he favored LSU, the apparent heir when he came into camp, and now back to he brings nothing to the table.

Well it should be obvious but if he needs to hear it, how about ...

Spring Ball opens with the #1 and #2 QBs on the 2012 Depth Chart each having double digit wins on his resume. You haven't played in a game.

One has thrown for 4,400 career yards and 34 TDs. The other has thrown for 2,400 yards and a dozen TDs. Rees came off the bench as a true freshman when the veteran starter went down and outperformed him over time to take over as starter. Rees had almost 4,000 yards under his belt before Golson ever took a snap in a game but the rookie won the job in practice. One has struggled with ball security; the other has struggled in the Red Zone.

No one's job is guaranteed. Everybody has to win it every day.

This team will play in the the National Championship game next January. Can you lead them there?

You've got 30 days of Spring Ball to make your mark. Then you'll have 90 days before Preseason Camp and another opportunity to display your talent.

Show me. Win the job. Carpe diem!

Then there's ...

Gunner, every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle, Gunner ... when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

Gunner, did you miss Tommy being nabbed by a cab driver?

Did you miss the plane to Miami when Bama turned Everett (-7 Yds) and the rest of the backfield into gazelle barbecue?

Just do it.

Wouldn't it just have to run faster than the slowest Gazelle?

a]. Gunner is a perfect fit theoretically for the stand-and-deliver quickly [with using your feet when you are asked to] offensive scheme that Coach likes;

b]. Gunner is number three going into the Spring, and anything else that Coach could have told him would have been a lie, making Kelly the exact kind of liar-to-athletes that this board always howls at the opposing coaches about. Kelly is NOT that man;

c]. Gunner is/was in a bad place for becoming the ND quarterback next year because of the circumstances which required Everett to start. Everett didn't become Tyrod Taylor yet [Taylor wasn't either at that stage], but demonstrated that he might develop in that way. Coach obviously thinks that he can work with that.

I have difficulty understanding why anyone has trouble sussing this. Gunner himself, and his family, have apparently been able to do so.

I, too, view this as a sad confluence of circumstance which costs us the possibility of seeing a great stand [or run] and deliver pro-quality quarterback develop at ND. It is probable that if Everett were abducted by aliens and Gunner started all next year, that we would have had growing pains again and not won quite as many games. The future? Probably pretty darn good. But Kelly doesn't play in the future, so Gunner would have to overcome today's Everett by today's Gunner.

Gunner apparently thought the odds of today's Gunner overcoming today's Everett [in Kelly's eyes] was not probable.
