shotgun vs BP vest...

at least he doesn't need the red priestess or warging to come back :)

A noobstick at close range like that would probably do a lot of damage even with a BP vest. But I think you're right that he probably isn't dead.

lol wut

I mean that was definitely shocking but I'm kind of pissed. Not sure what the point of that was in the grand scheme other than to shock the audience.

Yeah that was my reaction too. If he's dead, what was the point of all the exposition of the Velcoro character?

But apparently he's not dead:

‘True Detective’ Episode 2: The Man with No Dick and the Masked Assassin - The Daily Beast

It’s a fun cliffhanger, to be sure, though anyone who’s seen so much as the trailer to True Detective Season 2 knows the mustachioed fella has plenty of scenes that have yet to hit the air, and this ain’t Game of Thrones.

Also, I think this gives away that Velcoro is still alive, unless I missed something? I'm looking at the paragraph beginning with "Still, even if these mysteries . . ." (I won't quote or paraphrase the article in case some people don't want to know.) Either I missed something (totally possible, I was a bit distracted while watching last night) or that piece refers to something that hasn't happened yet.

True Detective Season 2 review: It feels like a direct retort to Nic Pizzolatto’s critics.

Also, I thought this review of last night's episode offered an interesting tidbit:

Is Colin Farrell Really Dead on True Detective? | Vanity Fair

The Mythology: “The Yellow King” and “Carcosa” are the twin mythological terms (lifted from Ambrose Bierce and Robert Chambers) that helped set True Detective apart from the pack last year. In an interview with Vanity Fair, series creator Nic Pizzolatto said his mythological inspiration for Season 2 goes back much further than Bierce and Chambers. The article points out that “he described the new season as a detective story in the manner of Oedipus Rex, in which ’the detective is searching and searching and searching, and the culprit is him.’”

Not sure who is the "detective" Pizzolatto is referring to, though. Most likely Velcoro, if he isn't dead, though I guess it could be any of the four main characters.

Gonna throw this out there...

Since it's become pretty obvious that Paul is gay (probably in denial), WHAT IF he killed this dude and gauged his eyes out because he was a witness to some sort of gay sex Paul participated in? There's the whole hooker thing going on and the scene where Paul was staring at male hookers. So what if Paul picked up a male hooker, the dead guy somehow witnessed it, and Paul killed him?

It would also explain Paul thinking about killing himself and that Oedipus Rex quote might support this even more.

The one thing that possibly kills this theory is that Paul found the body...but there are ways to explain that...Maybe he has some sort of schizophrenia or something.

Let me know what you guys think about that. I might post it on Reddit if anyone thinks it has merit.

So apparently, they got us again... Damn... I really thought this would be a crappy season. Now here I am again, all in with True Detective.

Bravo.

I'm betting not dead.

Agree. No way he's dead.

Paul may be gay, (not that there's anything wrong with that) but his mom was a little creepy. She gave me the impression that she would bed him if she could. Maybe that's his issue. Maybe she's bedded him before?

I agree. That was the vibe I got from that scene, that she is a whore and either a) bedded him or b) subjected him to a variety of whore type activities.

The whole you can sleep in your old bed thing was really creepy.

Thinking the killer is Rachel or someone from her family. Need to rewatch the ending and pay attention to the shooter's size

I think he's dead but we'll keep seeing his character. All his scenes will just be from earlier in time. I just don't see how you live through a shotgun at point blank range to the stomach even with a vest.

SPOILER

He's not dead according to pictures online of scenes with him in a huge bandage across his abdomen. Maybe they are photoshopped but they look real. I don't really get how you survive that but we'll see.

I think this is gonna be right. Something tells me the whole backstory of him killing his ex-wife's rapist, and owing that debt to Vaughn's character, will force the show to do flashbacks to that time period. So there will be a lot more scenes with him, just all pre-birdman shooting.

Thought it was a decent episode. Not surprised at all that Colin Farrell didn't die and I think the rubber bullets explanation was actually satisfying to me because it mattered to the story.

Something is off about Kelly Reilly's character...Methinks she has something to do with the killing.

I'm betting on the Mexican bar lady with the scarred-up face being the person that informed that Farrell was going to the house alone.

No one else was around when Vaughn asked him to go, the doorway she hangs out in is right next to the table. She's obviously supposed to be a major character but doesn't really have a place yet.

That's a good observation. Never connected that dot, but I think you're onto something.

Another "chess piece" episode, but I enjoyed it. Felt the rubber bullet plotline was a good one. Kinda surprised that they were able to not have that leak out before the episode.

Vince Vaughn can scrap.

Need to watch it over. Got a few business calls during the show, so missed out on a lot of the dialog. Happy that he survived, but like y'all, not surprised. Loved the teeth pulling episode.

I'm calling it right now. Colin's kid is really his. They've played up to much the other way.

What purpose would that serve?

The whole point of the "custody battle" is that he is a shitty father. If he was a good person and treated his kid well it wouldn't matter to his ex-wife if he wasn't the biological father. She is just using it as leverage to avoid the impact a court battle would have on her son. It's not like she wouldn't petition for custody if the kid was actually his.

It would serve as a shocking moment. I can see Colin's character evolving to point the point that he wants to know, the poor guys ex-wife is holding a paternity test around his neck like an albatross. Wouldn't any normal person want to know?

I actually think he doesn't want to know at all because he knows in his heart that it's not his. If he thought it was his he wouldn't be scared of a paternity test.

I'm pretty sure they both know. I mean obviously there's a chance they're both wrong, but they way they both talk about it... Lets just say I wouldn't be surprised if the rapist was a ginger.

Right I agree. He doesn't want to see it become official because it would confirm his fears and also make him look even more suspicious in the death of the rapist.

Maybe it's because I'm a huge Game of Thrones fan, and that season just finished, but I agree with everything you just said that's why I think it's going the other way. :)
