Tribune article about cheering

I thought the atmosphere was pretty good this weekend. I have been to about 10 games and this is the first time I remember the opposing team having trouble with communication. It happened a few times, once was down in front of me (the student section endzone) when Purdue was flagged for a false start and a delay of game penaly inside the 10. The crowd was rocking then. I had a problem with one lady, she thought I was being too loud. When Jamoris was flagged for the helmet to helmet I yelled come on this is football you Nancies! She was offended for some reason. I said oh is your name Nancy, I am sorry. That was the only small issue I had. But as usual I had the guy sitting near me that thought it was his duty to tell everyone to not cuss or he would do something about it. Ironically he had a Tapout shirt on. I was proud of myself for not cussing once during the game.

What he's saying is that if you cheer, he's fine with you staying alive.

So HE is now the arbiter of who deserves to live and who should die? Who should have the joy, however evinced, and privilege of attending an ND football game? How kind of him (and you?) to lend a bit of clarity.

It was a crass, arrogant and inappropriate comment.

If I failed to catch sarcasm in your comment, I apologize.

If older fans want to attend a game and not cheer, that's fine. They pay money for their tickets and have to right to look on in whatever fashion they want. They do not, however, have the right to affect the experience of other fee-paying fans.

You are the one being arrogant here.

The stadium "atmosphere" was never an issue when we churned out Top 10 football teams. It has only been an issue as we've become a Top 40 team. In the process of going from a great program to an average one, like politics, the change got conflated with things like the stadium "atmosphere" , the turf, the fans, the NBC contract etc. etc. The central change has been the quality of the football. Everything else is political type chatter.

Not at all – just annoyed and angry. One poster asks "us" to take heart in knowing that the bane of his ND game experience are approaching death with every breath (while ignoring the fact that he is as well), followed by a poster (who I think/hope had his tongue firmly in his cheek) who comments that he felt the initial poster meant simply that "... if you cheer, he's fine with you staying alive."

It was the flippant tone of his comment that bothered me. "Fear not, soon all these buzz killing blue hairs will be dead! Then the stadium will be mine, all MINE!"

There is no "mine," there is only "ours."

Very much a sarcastic comment. No worries.

Man sounds like some of you have sat next to some jerk fans. No ones every told me to sit down and stop being so loud. I've never had anyone say anything about cussing although I can't say I do that a lot around people I don't know. Granted say some old lady or old man was sitting behind me I would have some respect for him if it didn't look like he was able to stand for every play, and stay seated.

Sorry that I missed the sarcasm, my man. I'd built up a blinding head of steam reading all the craptastic posts castigating older, less spry fans without unlimited/less resilient vocal chords. Taken in the light of your intention I appreciate the comment.

In regard to grammar errors: I now have my eyes on YOU. You're not on the "Get Out of Jail Free" list just yet. The night is still young. Maybe it's old. Hell, maybe I don't know anymore.

I think I'll take a nap before I have the need to yell at kids to keep off my lawn. NeuteredDoomer's crapping on my yard went a long way in keeping those miscreants at bay.

I've no need for Metamucil. Through years of experimentation I've arrived at the optimal doses of red wine (heart medicine) and beer (grain nutrition) to keep the system flowing and the stool reasonable and timely.

My liver may be a whole 'nother matter, but for now I choose not to deal with it.

Well, actually, your grammar needs a bit of shoring up. You should replace the "that" with "who" since you re referring back to persons and not objects.
That is, unless you consider old people to be objects and not persons.
Perhaps, you should call your grandfather and grandmother and ask them which they would prefer.

Coincidence. Even in decent years, or big games, that stadium atmosphere has been disappointing. Yeah, they'll get a little louder for some bigger games, but it's not very impressive given the number of fans. The bigger issue is the fact that some fans ask others to reduce their noise level. That is absolutely uncalled for in a football game. You can make the same argument that the level of football has dimished due to the lack of energy in the stadium.

Regardless of how the atmosphere has changed in the last 20 years, we shouldn't just wait around for the football team to become a Top 10 level program again. We should do our part to be the 12th man rather than take the passive approach that we'll cheer once they're good again. Thats the sign of a poor fan base.

Can't speak for the whole stadium last weekend but my section was doing pretty good. I was luckily on about the 20 in the gold seats across from the student section and whenever Purdue was in our end it was quite loud. We even had a group of nuns right next to us that were quite noisy at their first game! And i was very proud of myself for being able to watch my mouth!

Something we have to remember is that the typical loud stadiums like TAMU, UF, or Death Valley has student bodies that number in the 10s of thousands unlike NDs 9000 undergrad population. It helps to have 10000 students at the game instead of 4000.

more like 30k students in the stands at the large state schools (not 10k)

This is definitely a factor. Find me a school that has as few or fewer students than ND that is anywhere near as loud. That's why it's on the other 75,000 or so to be as loud as possible!

The usher by me was actually imploring us to get up and be loud. Loved it! Here's that man:

IMG_0426.jpg

Also, the players loved the music, as it got them even more hyped, and I think it helped the fans as well. For a game vs. Purdue, I thought the crows was the best I'd seen it live, other than the Michigan game (huge rivalry though) in 2008. I was very pleased with the improvements in the stadium atmosphere from the South Florida debacle last year, the last game I went to.

How was the game atmosphere? It seemed like it was awesome, but we had a party during the game so I was unable to hear the crowd noise. I was at ND vs. USC last year, which was pretty rowdy. How did this year's UM game compare to last year's USC?

I saw a lot and I mean A LOT of blue hairs sitting the entire game. Also a lot of social gatherers that were just there for the event, not the game. One funny thing was that I had a woman probably in her early 40s sitting in the row in front of me that never stood up the entire game and a man in his sixties right in front of her. He stood the whole game with his binoculars and it drove the lady nuts. She was throwing empty coffee cups at him and telling him to sit down and he just turned around and yelled at her and told her to stand her a$$ up. It was awesome.

Best crowd I've heard or seen.

did you happen to go to the 2005 U$C "bush push" game. loudest i've heard the stadium and one of the most exciting albeit disappointing games, too. I had a great view (from the student section) of BQ's scramble/TD with a couple minutes left in the 4th qtr...sigh

Also, a vacated win by the cheating dogs.

Was at the game, unfortunately was near the Mich section and MICH band. Though our entire section took a STAND and stood the ENTIRE GAME! Great atmosphere, music was loud as the crowd was.

My only issues, there were some 3rd downs no music was played, they definitly need to add to their inventory of songs, and instead of starting the music as the team breaks the huddle, start the song when their getting into their huddle. Seemed like there were times they almost didn't start the song until after Denard made is audibles. We need that music blaring while in the huddle up until they nearly hike the ball.

All in all though, the stadium was rockin!
