Not surprising. He came back only to be poorly/hardly used in a struggling running game.

I have a hypothesis that he was gone too long during the offseason last year, and didn't get himself back into shape in time to contribute once he reversed course on his transfer.

Even if he put in work in the weight room during the year, it'd be hard for the staff to insert him into meaningful offensive plans again, especially considering how involved he was as a freshman/sophomore as a blocker.

He seems like he'd be the perfect H-back type for Long's offense (fullback-hybrid type deal). So, if he was involved as a freshman and sophomore, but then couldn't get himself re-involved as a junior, and doesn't see himself as fitting into the new offense even though he seems tailor-made for a certain position, it leads to believe that he's not developing like he should, or else he wants to be a primary pass-catcher as a TE. And he can't be a primary pass-catcher with the guys in front of him at ND.

So do we think more of Cameron Smith or Freddie Canteen? Both are not going to be factors, we'd be lucky if 1 is to some degree. So who's the better prospect?

I'd guess Smith since he's familiar with Alexander/Chip Long. But Canteen is basically a bigger WR with the speed as well.

If Smith is healthy, he can be the target on the two or three go-routes per game that would have been reserved for Stepherson, if Stepherson really is still in the doghouse.

We have numbers at WR, just not any proven depth... but these new guys aren't totally proven, either. Just more proven than McKinley and McIntosh. Still, I find it hard to believe that they add Smith, after already adding Canteen, if they didn't think he would provide a legitimate impact of some sort.

It's also possible that they're just adding bodies for the sake of adding bodies, that way Young and Armstrong are both guaranteed a redshirt.

most likely in my mind, see if these guys can stretch the field on a couple of fades

Heard more info about the other transfer, sounds like it is an OL and, from what people have been saying about losing Hoge, this could hurt our depth as well. Does not appear to be Tyler...although I believe he will not be playing this year.

Any reason for all the outbound transfers at once?

Do you think 2 transfers is a lot? To me this is normal attrition. 2 transfers, completely separate issues. This is just the time of year that you see this come up all over college football. I don't think 2 is a crazy number, at all.

It's 3, but still not a big deal.

I didn't say it was "crazy," or even "a lot. And I don't think it's that big a deal. But if you count Barajas all of last week ago its three, plus Luatua taking a medical. Just thinking aloud why all at once.
You tend to see more transfers around spring practice, or maybe ahead of fall camp. Just wondering aloud why now during what's typically a quiet time - especially since none appear to be academic.

Forgot Barajas last week. When do players start reporting back to campus? I believe June 10th is when they start back up again. I've always thought this was a busy time of year. If you are not planning on being with the team next year, this is right before you start being committed to team activities.

I think the biggest problem from the transfers will be o-line depth in the future. Doesn't that leave ND with just 3 o-linemen from a 2 year period (2015 and 2016)? If so that could become a big issue in the future especially as only two of them are highly recruited. It very well could force players in the future to play before they are ready and force some people to not "redshirt".
