Supposed to be some wicked weather passing through by midnight tonight (in my area and more of Indiana, I'm sure). Severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings to be expected.

Sirens shouldn't be going off without a tornado on the ground. Kind of mad about that. Doesn't help if there is a real tornado on the ground later.

Not sure where you're from but that's not the case in most areas. Usually a funnel is enough to get them going. Technically, they should start during "severe weather". By the time there's a tornado on the ground, it's too late.

Holding off on the sirens until touchdown is akin to closing the barn door after the horse has left. When I first moved to MN from FL in '78 I thought Minnie-sew-tahns were pussies (wait, that's another thread, isn't it?) and trigger happy with warning sirens.

Until, that is, a storm rolled in with the sirens wailing – which I ignored, having "weathered" many a violent storm and hurricane in Orlando – but damn near couldn't negotiate the 200 or so feet to the back door because of the wind. Two years later a tornado took down a number of trees within a two block radius.

Since then then there have been a number of storms with tornadoes or strong sheer winds that have come through. I have a healthy respect for the sirens and know the "primo" spot in my basement for shelter.

I have been fortunate. A few minutes in the basement beat the hell out of other possible outcomes.

Yeah, sirens go on when the weather is favorable for tornados, not even just for funnels. Those sirens are only to meant to tell you to turn on the radio or TV and listen to what's going on. I know these things... STL has had some shits weather lately.

To further that point, in many areas, I know that if that area is currently under a Tornado Watch that also has an active Severe Thunderstorm Warning going on, the sirens will go off even though there may not be an active Tornado Warning.

Around here, sirens go off as soon as a funnel cloud is spotted. If the funnel never reaches the ground, then that's just a bonus. People who ignore the sirens, do so at their own peril.

We had bad storms in the Chicago area. Storms were actually much worse to both the north and the south of the city. The city itself kind of got a break as the worst stuff kind of went around the city on both sides. Out here on the NW side all we got was some rain. Though you could see crazy lightning bolts off in the distance.

Merge this with the "are kids soft now?" thread, and wait for the "back in my day, sirens meant the stinking commies were gonna nuke us, not it was about to rain you pu$$ies"

We have warnings and watches currently in Cleveland...this rarely happens in this area. It's supposed to continue until the wee hours as well. Be safe everyone.

I know... I'm here brah... :wave::wave::wave:

Get your asses underground.

We've got another hour before the good stuff hits... I put the family to sleep and I'll stay up in case sirens go off. I'll cry if something happens to my Irish Man Cave... ;)

I'm from South Bend, where we had Tornadoes come through in the past...They are called TORNADO sirens for a reason. There were no funnel clouds and they even knew that it was straight line winds, not converging weather patterns. If we had sirens every time there was bad weather, nobody would know when a Tornado was on the ground and to really seek shelter. I hope nobody was seeking shelter last night because it was just a regular storm with lightning and thunder. You continue to have sirens blaring for weak storms and the boy that cried wolf will be crying when the wolf actually bites him and he wasn't ready for it. I would have no problem with sirens going off if the conditions were very bad and that even though a tornado hasn't touched, it was inevitable. Just my opinion I guess. When a logical person sees bad weather, they should turn on their tv or radio to see whats coming...the sirens should not be telling you that. This thread should be merged with the sissies thread. Haha. Was a good show of lighting though.
