Why would he be pissed at Alford? The osu job didnt come open until after signing day?

Try not to be so naive. If you honestly can't see why Dexter would be pissed then I don't know what to tell you.

Totally speculating, but could Alford be pissed because we're brining in someone else (i.e. Quinn) to take LaFleur's place and take over the 0ffense and thereby bypassing Alford?

6 possible candidates to replace Stan Drayton at Ohio State - Land-Grant Holy Land

By Matt Brown Feb 6 2015, 11:18a 6

...

Al Washington, RB coach, Boston College

Washington doesn't necessarily have a record of being a dynamite recruiter (he was ranked 91st in the ACC via 247Sports' rankings), but it would be difficult to do that at Boston College anyway. What he does have, however, is a record of helping nurture exceptional running attacks. Working under Steve Addazio, a former Meyer assistant coach, Washington and the Eagles build Andre Williams into a legitimate Heisman candidate, and ran one of the best running attacks in college football this season (15th in yards per game). Washington is a Columbus native and a graduate of Bishop Watterson, and has recruited in Ohio, the northeast, and North Carolina.

Deland McCullough, RB coach, Indiana

The Indiana Hoosiers may not be a great football team, but one thing they've been able to do very successfully over the last few seasons is run the football. McCullough helped mold superback Tevin Coleman, one of the best in the Big Ten in 2014, as well as Stephen Houston in 2013. McCullough is from Youngstown and played and coached at Miami (OH) and at a high school in Cincinnati. In the 2015 recruiting class at Indiana, he also brought in recruits from Maryland and Florida.

Tony Alford, RB coach, Notre Dame

Alford might be a bit of a stretch, given that he doesn't have obvious ties to Urban Meyer and has been at Notre Dame since 2010, but his appeal is strong. Rated as one of the best recruiters in the country last season, Alford helped bring in multiple blue-chips, and while a Colorado State graduate, has coached in Ohio (Kent State, Mt. Union), and in the Big Ten footprint (Notre Dame, Iowa State). Alford also has ties to other coaches on Ohio State's staff, and many of the 2016 recruits Ohio State is trying to pick up.

Mark Elder, TE coach, Tennessee

Elder is responsible for tight ends for the Volunteers now, but he's previously coached running backs at Cincinnati. Elder is an Ohio native (Case Western Reserve graduate), has a Masters from Akron, and has spent the bulk of his career in Ohio and Michigan. Elder was one of the coaches responsible for the development of Isaiah Pead, who was a huge reason for Cincinnati's success in the Big East, and was ranked one of the best recruiters in the SEC. If Ohio State was looking for for somebody to further their recruiting bonafides rather than specific positional knowledge, Elder could be a nice fit.

Thomas Brown, RB coach, Wisconsin

If you're going to grab a guy from the Big Ten, why not look at a school that has done the best job of building a running game? Brown is a young coach, having only been at Wisconsin for a year, but that year saw Melvin Gordon blow up as the best running back in the country. Prior to working at Wisconsin, Brown coached running backs at Marshall (where he had three running backs rush for over 500 yards) and Chattanooga, and has experience recruiting out of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and his home state of Georgia, a extremely important state for Ohio State recruiting.

Tim Hinton, TE coach, Ohio State

Ohio State doesn't necessarily have to go outside the family to grab a running back coach. If Ohio State would rather hire an ace recruiter to coach tight ends (say, somebody like Mark Elder), they could always move Hinton over to running backs. After all, Hinton coached running backs at Notre Dame and Cincinnati recently, and already intimately knows Ohio State's offense, philosophy and the players. Depending on who is out there in the coaching marketplace, Ohio State has the flexibility to go a few different directions in their search.

He could be pissed but going to OSU wouldn't fix that. On Jan 14th Meyer promoted Warinner to OC and hired Tim Beck as Co-OC/QB Coach. He would have two guys ahead of him in the OC slot(s), one a recent hire, at both ND and OSU.

Ohio State promotes Ed Warriner, makes Tim Beck hire official - CBSSports.com

It was a quiet signing day. Here come the BOOMS we have been waiting for. They come in 3's, so hopefully the third (Cooks, Alford.....) is something simple like Kelly joining ISIS or the program self-imposing a 5 year bowl ban.

I agree we should give him a very nice raise if that was all it will take to keep him. I want to keep him badly. I'd be pissed as can be if it was a money issue only and ND refused to pay. But it's not the only thing. There's more at play here.

I don't want to put words into your mouth but when you say it's not only about money that seems to mean that money is playing some role. It's just frustrating that to me (and others) that ND doesn't step up and pay top dollar to their coaches. No, I don't have numbers on what they pay but from all indications it's pretty average.

The way ND has operated in the past doesn't make any long-term financial sense. As far as I can tell they have been paying two head coaches at the same time for the past 10 years (paid Tyrone through 2009 and Charlie until December of this year). Money talks in this business and they would have been much smarter to throw the bank at Urban in 2005 instead of hiring/firing/paying mediocre coaches.

TBF, college football is a pretty cutthroat business. Another couple seasons like the last two and Kelly's gone. Or another season like 2012 and Kelly's gone to the NFL. Either way Alford and the rest are left looking for a new job. This isn't olden-days IBM where you work at one school 40 years and retire with a nice part and a watch on the company.

I wouldn't blame a coach for getting it while he can. But I might blame us for letting a good one go.

Absolutely 100% agree with you. Nothing surprises me at all in CFB. It's big business and never know what tomorrow brings. I'm not surprised by any move at all.

Believe me, I absolutely agree that ND needs to start paying their assistants competitively.

I'm just saying that that one poster is overreacting massively, asking for ND to demote or fire Denbrock to make Alford OC. He has no idea what is going on here. It's more than the $$, like I said in my original post. And IF he takes the job, it will all come out in a couple of days, bc CoachD on ISD is very close to the situation and posted that he will give clarity to it soon.

Lou on rivals said his source says Alford is going to OSU, not 'might' be..that's Lou pointing out that distinction, not me.

I really respected Alford. He seemed to really buy in to what ND stands for. If he goes to work for that snack oil salesman Urban, all the respect is gone.

Per rivals, the interview has happened.

We're going to lose our primary recruiter for texas, florida, california, and Louisiana all in a weeks Time. Yay.

At least we have the Midwest, which urban snd Harbaugh will clean up.

Also, something must be going on in this program. 2015 looks like a special year with all these starters coming back and these coaches could be setting themselves up for HC jobs. To jump ship now makes it look like a ton of bad shlt is going on. Just my opinion. Why leave if a playoff run is a realistic possibility?

Just really disappointed in Alford. Coaches leave, it happens. I just thought he stood for more than what OSU represents.

It is a punch in the gut, but the Irish will come out of this fine. I cannot lose faith in what we are doing under Kelly.

Ok recruiting should be fun to watch this year since our HC likes to play slack ass in that dept.

Obviously this would be a huge loss, but this is an opportunity for ND to pony up and start paying their staff much more competitively. Alford is a great coach and recruiter, but he has represented ND even better as a person above anything else. I hope this gets figured out quickly. If it doesn't, there is nothing that would change my views on Coach Alford. Just a great person all the way around.

Not worried about recruiting. We have BVG, Denbrock, and Bob Elliot.

Well if he has interviewed and it's for a lateral move then he's gone. Kelly has said in the past that if you're looking for a lateral move you better get it because you're not coming back (something to that affect). I knew we would lose Alford one day but this is about the worst conceivable way, IMO.

Coaches come and coaches go for all sorts of reasons. Alford has been here since 2009 and maybe feels like his time at ND has met its end. He is trying to broaden his coaching tree and doing what he thinks is best for his career. I refuse to get upset at someone choosing to do whats best for their career. As has been pointed out before, he's been passed up for how many coordinator/HC positions? In my opinion, I don't think its about money.

Looking at it from ND's perspective, the beat goes on. Plenty of other coaches out there that can be just as good of a coach and quite frankly, better then Tony. Remove recruiting from the equation and ask yourself, have any RBs during his tenure really stepped up the way that Ezekiel Elliott has? No. It has been a dogfight with the RB group.

Like NDinLA and Lax, I think there is more to the story. And let us not forget some of the coaches that we could get as replacements for the staff as I'm sure there will be more shake ups to come.

Does it suck, certainly for us fans we lost a great ambassador to the university and top recruiter....but get a f#cking grip on life and reality that this changes how you view him....we have NO clue as to what is going on behind the scenes...and for the moral superiors...maybe he feels he can bring some to Osu

It's no like rb position has been great over the years...so maybe we somehow get better production...change of scenery happens at all the TOP schools
