I have to wonder if after all the success Alford's had recruiting down south does he lose a little credibility for jumping ship? He always seems to play up the ND is the best choice card when it comes to morals and academics. Did he change his mind or am i off base here?

So am I to assume the NCAA doesn't have tampering rules, like you need teams permission to talk to coach.

He's the most senior coach on staff...even longer than BK...yet he's still RB coach/recruiting coord. This is one lateral move he will make.

Urban Meyer coached Tony Alford at Colorado State. He was the WR coach there for Alford's junior/senior seasons.

Just can't see Alford (based on what he sells to kids) jumping to a program lead by a man who aint come here to coach school.

In all seriousness Autry Denson is the obvious successor. Young African American former pro with ND ties who has the ability to recruit Florida and built in connections down there.

Denson is in a similar spot as Todd Lyght in that he was hired just a few weeks ago. I agree he would be a great replacement.

CFB is a cold world. I feel for the recruits around the country that have had their recruiter/position coach bolt so shortly after signing day.

As a coach I honestly think he's pretty average but everything he does in recruiting far outweighs that. Theres a good chance we don't have 3 of our 4 scholarship RB w/o him

The important thing now is to engineer ND's Harbaugh. Get Lyght and Denson on their way...

That's kind of how i feel. I can see wanting to go if there is a clear path to advancement. I mean hell, who doesn't want the opportunity to grow. If this is his reasoning i can't be mad at him. Guy has done a lot for ND.

Report: Ohio State aims to poach Notre Dame RBs coach

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer isn’t wasting any time in his attempt to replace running backs coach Stan Drayton, who left Columbus for an opportunity with the Chicago Bears.

IrishIllustrated.com’s Pete Sampson reported that Meyer set his sights on Notre Dame’s Tony Alford to become Drayton’s replacement.

Despite never coaching together, Meyer’s interest stems from his time as an assistant coach with the Colorado State Rams when Alford was a running back for the team.

If Meyer is able to pry Alford out of South Bend, Ohio State will have its new running back coach in the fold and steal Notre Dame’s ace recruiter.

Alford also serves as Notre Dame’s recruiting coordinator. He was instrumental in Notre Dame’s 11th-ranked recruiting class, according to Rivals.com. This was Alford’s fourth class heading up Notre Dame’s recruiting department. All four were considered top 20 classes.

Prior to becoming a member of the Fighting Irish during Charlie Weis‘ tenure, Alford spent the 2007-08 seasons with the Louisville Cardinals. Previous stops also include the Iowa State Cyclones (two times), Washington Huskies, Kent State Golden Flashes and Mount Union Purple Raiders.

Alford could be the perfect hire for Meyer to solve some of the team’s recent issues with recruits after Drayton’s surprise move after National Signing Day.

Oh I totally agree; I loathe recruiting. It's the manipulation of teenagers for a paycheck. I believe that coaches who convince a kid to attend their football factory, instead of getting a superior and elite education, are genuine pieces of shit.

I can't find the moral justification for being a fan of places like Ohio State (and dozens of other football factories), so the thought of Alford taking his talent to Columbus is deeply troubling.

Per 247 Alford told Dexter he was talking to them but nothing was finished.

Everyone is a mercenary. The sooner you come to realize that the better

You're right. Doesn't mean Alford isn't a great guy, but just b/c he's at ND doesn't mean he's above doing what Drayton or others have done. In the end, he's got to do what's best for his family & him. Being an underpaid RB coach who has to recruit w/ one hand tied behind his back can only last so long when others are making offers that dwarfs what he gets in South Bend.

I was thinking the same thing. They are all pimps. The older I get, the more I realize just how much everything is for sale. No one is above it in this grimy business.

If money's the issue we really ought to pay the man. If we won't compete with OSU on assistant salaries we're in trouble. If it's job title, what's the harm in throwing him a co-OC title or something? If OSU's promising him OC-in-waiting, they just promoted Ed Warriner, so it could be a long wait.

Only other issue would be some personal clash with Kelly (seems unlikely), or if he's tired of the recruiting restrictions at ND (which would be a surprise given the talk he talks). Those are on him.

Either way, hope he stays.

TBF, college football is a pretty cutthroat business. Another couple seasons like the last two and Kelly's gone. Or another season like 2012 and Kelly's gone to the NFL. Either way Alford and the rest are left looking for a new job. This isn't olden-days IBM where you work at one school 40 years and retire with a nice part and a watch on the company.

I wouldn't blame a coach for getting it while he can. But I might blame us for letting a good one go.

Translation, it's happening but let's wait til it's finalized.

Alternative translation: Someone you respect approaches you about a good job, you always talk to them. Doesn't mean you take the job.

Thing is, Warinner is Co-OC, so why can we not make Alford Co-OC for us. I just wish ND would step up and take care of the guys that are very important for our future success.

Can we please get Denbrock the fuck out of Alford's way?

Has ND ever written a new contract in the middle of one to keep a coach?

Why? Why would you fire a guy or demote a guy who has been arguably our best position coach for years and is an excellent recruiter?

You have absolutely no idea what's going on here. None. You're talking out of your ass, wanting to fire/demote excellent coaches, throwing a fit when you have no clue what is going on. It's not just money, I can assure you that.

And Alford has been here, what, 6 years, and is a known entity. And he's been offered how many coordinator positions? Zero. Not even his alma mater will hire him as their OC. And yet you want us to demote an excellent coach and recruiter to take a chance on a guy with no experience there?

People think that Denbrock is the OC in name only, but he does A LOT more than people realize. Yes, this is Kelly's baby, but he needs someone on the same page as him on the day to day who gets everything in place for Kelly. Kelly is far too busy to do everything for the offense, and that's where Denbrock comes into play. No way can you drop a guy as valuable as Denbrock.

I agree we should give him a very nice raise if that was all it will take to keep him. I want to keep him badly. I'd be pissed as can be if it was a money issue only and ND refused to pay. But it's not the only thing. There's more at play here.

Didnt see it posted, Sampson thinks Alford leaves based on whoever he's talked to tonight. Posted it after the tweet originally posted in this thread

Somogyi made similar statement though qualified it by saying it was only one source & he needed to hear more. That's wishful thinking IMO.
