Other than the fact it's Cleveland, he's not in a bad place from a talent perspective. The Browns do a good job using their TEs too. He could have been the Raiders TE Coach where they criminally abuse and underuse their TEs like Mayer. Rees could come off looking pretty good with Njoku for a TE. He was 6th in yards among all TEs during the regular season, 882 yards and that was with Watson and 4 other QBs throwing to him over the course of the year. He wanted to get to the NFL, obviously it wasn't about the money and he's made good bank the last few years anyway.

I don’t doubt he will be a NFL OC at some point, but let’s not act like this is a well trodden path. How many college OC’s took jobs as position coaches in the NFL and are currently NFL OCs? I count 2.

The NFL was always where Tommy was going to end up. He wasn’t built for the college game and that’s fine. Only lunatics would want to coach at the college level.

I don’t care about the NFL. Good luck to him and hopefully I never have to think about Tommy Rees again. I feel free for the first time since 2010.

He’s now as close to being an OC in the nfl as a qb coach for Marshall. Browns have an average or bad offense next year and he’s forgotten by everyone not nd fans

If he's smart enough to sit back and learn he may turn out to be a good professional coach. He's a baby in terms of age in the coaching world.

I agree with this. I'm not a fan of Tommy, I think he's an average coach right now but learning. But it can only help ND if he becomes a great coach, as long as he still loves ND.

At most he will help develop the passing game plan for the week, not calling it or having sole responsibility for it.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you are asking but Bama had to buy Rees out of the guaranteed portion of his contract since they didn't retain him.

I could be totally wrong but it wouldn't be all the surprising if there was language in said contract that if he gets another collegiate job they don't pay the whole buyout. Or, less whatever he makes at this next collegiate stop.

Yes, this was the gist of my question. It wasn't clear to me that any team other than Bama would have to worry about buyout money but now I know you were referring to Rees and him not wanting to forego any of that money if he pursued another college gig. That is if that's really how things were worded.

The $4M was reported. Whether he gets that or not if he takes a college gig is pure speculation on my part. But wouldn’t be that unusual.

Not a clue. His name was thrown around on message boards for obvious reasons. I honestly assumed that’s who we’d get. I just saw BK making what would be a lazy, but justifiable hire.

I don't have any specific knowledge of Tommy's contract, but SOP is that Bama would owe him the balance of his contract minus anything he makes at another coaching job... and the other coaching job salary has to be typical for his position. They can't hire him for a job that typically pays $2 million and only pay him peanuts, leaving Bama to pay the balance. There's no buyout for anyone hiring him, since he wouldn't be breaking his contract with Bama. He just won't be able to double-dip and get a new job paying $X while still getting $2M from Bama. Anything he makes at the new job offsets what Bama would owe him. That's at least how it normally works.

Right play, wrong execution was a very common theme under OC TR - at ND as well as Bama. Many here have advocated a long time that he had more of an NFL skillset. I say good for him and wish him nothing but the best.
