ND still needs a QB coach. I think you would have to shuffle around the coaching staff to make this work.

Idk why I thought he was a QB coach and credited with developing Lawrence. Didn't realize it was Streeter who was a terrible coordinator.

Yeah Im not eager to do anything that would lead to Stuckey moving on unless there's internal scuttlebutt that he's moving on soon regardless (which I've not heard).

Please lord let this happen.

I would love Brian Hartline but I believe he has already been promoted to tOSU's OC.

What will be refreshing is that Freeman can do a legit search and hire an OC that he wants. That process alone will give him more HC confidence - which he needs.

The downside potential of this is scary and much greater than I think some realize, that isn’t surprising given the perception of Rees.

NDs #1 priority in replacing Rees is making Hartman and Carr happy. That is the world we live in. Making the QB happy. If you retain Hartman, you likely retain everyone else of importance on the roster and produce an offense in the fall that keeps Carr.

Hartman wants a NFL offense. So you will be hiring a QB coach who can develop and coach an offense that translates to the NFL. Period. No up and coming air raid, no Wake Forest, no Baylor 2010s, none of that.

This isn't even a close call. You get a chance to be OC for Saban you go. I am not sure its smart to Tweet that ND will match any salary because it makes it all the more painful when he leaves NOT for near term money and against his Alma Mater.

He is leaving because Alabama wins Nattys. Has many 5 star kids and can win the Natty and he can then leave in a year or two for either the NFL or a P5 HC Job....

Or you can ram a square peg into a round hole all season, and flame out.

I know this is a shitty example because the Bears are inept and suck, but they traded Greg Olsen because he “didn’t fit into Mike Martz’s system.”

Olsen was making pro bowls long after Martz’s short tenure with the Bears was over.

I would hope the philosophy for any new coach is to utilize the current players strengths, while recruiting replacements to fit your personal strengths.

There has to be a transition period.

The article says that the position was offered yesterday to Rees. His fiancée is also joining him. Your wife to-be doesn’t join you on a private jet to talk about an offer. Likely going to finalize something.

Much as Rees and BK did for a decade.

i guess, as a grad transfer, Hartman is free to go elsewhere should he choose. But would he? At this point he’d miss spring ball at the new place. I dunno, but barring a really bad fit as our new OC that seems unlikely?

I would hope MFMF isn’t completely blindsided by this and has a short list handy for such a scenario. The show goes on.

I’m sure Rees has filled him in every step of the way. Rees is a mature dude, and he’s been a part of ND for ten years of his life. He understands ND and knows what Freeman wants to accomplish here. Even if their relationship may not be 100% chummy, Rees is a professional.

Is Hartline actually going to be calling the plays? Or Day? If it’s Day then I think we can make a legit run at Hartline although risky to hire someone who has never been a playcaller.

Pretty sure with Rees it’s always been when not if. To Bama, smh, sucks to get poached by them yet again. But I’m sure Freeman has ideas on who he’d target as a replacement.

Pretty sure Day said he was giving up play calling duties.

We gotta let go of this. It's not happening.
And it shouldn’t.

We don’t need a recruiter at OC. We already have Freeman, some studs in Stuckey and DMC, and Heistand whose reputation recruits for him. We need a play caller to balance out the lack of experience at actually designing and running an offense.

Hartline is great at recruiting stud WRs but what else does he bring to the table?

Looks like Tommy will go the way of his mentor, Kelly. Lateral to an SEC school. No ill will towards either but I’m not upset they‘re gone. Hopefully we bring in an upgrade.

I hope so too but I worry about it being pretty late in the cycle and all the good ones are locked in. I almost wonder if Freeman goes the NFL route.
