I don't disagree, but "correct" is a far cry from "absolute best candidate." It's obviously not reasonable to expect the HC at ND to go through all the effort involved with a truly national search every time a coordinator role opens up. But given our perennially pedestrian offense was the glaringly obvious thing holding us back from competing in the post-season, Kelly absolutely should have done that at least once for the OC.

I suspect Lion is right and that his ego prevented him from doing so.
I honestly don't know the depth of their searches, past and present. They won't pay the most, allow the most exceptions, etc. I'm sure they probably could have done better. I do think the Chip Long hire was a far cry from moving Chuck Martin to the other side of the ball and moving Mike Denbrock. Kelly might have had reach he didn't realize he had at ND and it took him too long to figure it out.

I think both Long and Sanford would count as external/out-of-network.
Correct.

For a while there, however, it was GVSU reunions and one of those hires nearly put the program into a hole it wasn't getting out of.

I don't care who you are, you have to hire beyond whatever your network is. I still feel that, based on what we know, replacing Rees with Long was the right thing at that particular time. The thing that Rees is lacking for me as a fan are the QB recruiting results from an overall body of work standpoint. We're otherwise pissing into the wind every day from now until he is gone, which I believe will be after this season.

QB recruiting has seen a decent uptick since BK has left the picture. We're shooting for bigger fish across the board.

It really isn't the end all be all, and my preference more often than not is never jump to the alumni pack of candidates as a fan just because, but calling this nepotism kind of ignores what this industry is and how it works more often than not.

Bill Belichick has both of his sons on his coaching staff in New England. One was a long snapper at Rutgers and the other never played football in college as best I can tell. A lot of these guys hire their sons to be on their staffs.

Look at Iowa. Their offense is pretty far down the shit pile from ND.
We were talking about nepotism in college football coaching the other day. The Athletic must read us. ;)

"Utah’s Kyle Whittingham, Kentucky’s Mark Stoops and Purdue’s Jeff Brohm have brothers in staff positions, and several coaches — including Rutgers’ Greg Schiano, Indiana’s Tom Allen and Kansas State’s Chris Klieman — have sons working as graduate assistants. Mike Stoops has worked for both of his brothers, first as a defensive coordinator under Bob Stoops at Oklahoma and now as linebackers coach for Mark Stoops at Kentucky."

Also, for parallels with Tommy, I'd forgotten that Skip Holtz was our actual offensive coordinator in '92 and '93. I guess no one cries nepotism when you almost win the national championship.

Brian Brohm didn't join Jeff at WKU until 2016 after Jeff had already been there for two years. Brian played the HS and college game at a pretty high level then had some cups of coffee in the NFL and CFL. I'd take both at ND rather quickly before dudes like Dan Mullen and Tom Herman.

Even the Stoops, I can kind of understand. Mark has really done is own thing. It was Mike that kind of hung around Bob but even Mike coached without him for a bit before joining up at OU. Now Mike is at UK with Mark.

Some of these other ones just seem more difficult to justify than others. Thanks for posting this.

If he was at all good, he would be playing. Pyne is barely a D1 quarterback.
It’s hard not to conclude that.
Even Buchner was playing by now last season with a pretty good QB in front of him and having not barely played the game in 2 years.

Buchner was playing due to his dual threat ability. He barely passed when he was in.

how do you know he hasnt even thrown a collegiate pass yet
Well your lofty Coaching Staff seems panicked at the notion of Angeli hitting the field. I get the sense they are convinced 100% that he isn't ready....

Then again, they kind of insinuate the same thing with Tobias....LOL

Disappointing if that's the case. Tommy boy absolutely had to have Angeli as the QB in the 2022 class. My expectations were sky high.

ND was tied to him for a long time but tried to recruit over him on a number of occasions. People got really frustrated by the fact ND was offering guys late in their recruitments (Ty Simpson, Drew Allar) and then trying to full court press after their decisions were effectively over. It sounds like it actually worked with Walker Howard but he didn't have the academic side ready.
