I’m more concerned about the lack of talent on offense, which he (and the coaches who have left) are all accountable for, than his play calling. I don’t know what you are supposed to do when your OL can’t block anyone and you have a completely inexperienced QB who isn’t a pocket passer and you don’t have playmakers on offense so you are running Matt freaking Salerno out there for your deep shots.

This team is just bereft of talent sans a few studs like Mayer and Alt, and more importantly it has no identity.

He is like his dad (kelly) not a good recruiter. When you are good at either of your jobs you should be fired not kept. I think we would have been better off with a clean slate of coaching.

Yep. Our offensive recruiting is biting us just like we knew it would.

We play three pretty trash defenses in a row. We will know at the end of that whether we need to consider moving on to Angeli/Pyne. They want Buchner to be dynamic but what we really need is someone who can get the ball out on time to people if we’re not going to be able to pound it on the ground.

We wanted a more athletic Ian Book, we got a less athletic Brandon Wimbush.

I don't think we know what we have yet. Other teams will have to show more respect to the WR corp than OSU did, simply because they won't be as good. How Buchner performs in those environments will tell us a lot.

Never Pyne.

Not Angeli this year.

Make Bucher work this year and win 10 of 13 games.

Next year, It's Buchner vs Angeli vs the guy they bring in via the portal.

I wouldn't mind it so much if they didn't exclusively run it to the boundary every time.
That is Tommy Rees telling the world that ND cannot run the ball inside, full stop.

Similarly, everyone complaining about the conservative playcalling should take that as a sign that the Rees does not think Buchner is capable of running an aggressive pass-happy offense. Because Rees would run an air raid if he had the horses lol

If only Tommy had been OC the last few seasons and could have recruited the players that took the field tonight…
I won't disagree with that at all. I'm just defending the playcalling tonight because I don't think it was bad. Just my opinion.

He struggle at recruiting Qb's, His offensive play calling is always very blah. But it didn't help that the o line was trash tonight.
Pretty much this. But, should have brought the receivers in a little tighter and ran some slants or outs to get it out of Buchner's hands a little quicker. The pressure came much more often and almost every down in the second half. Didn't help that AE wasn't utilized a little more - a few draws would have helped slowed the rush IMO.

Rees probably isn't even that bad it is just it was such a lazy hire from Kelly when we needed to get the best OC we could.

Maybe he'll improve, but tonight was really bad even from a generous perspective. Michael "the size of a literal house" Mayer should not be having to make circus catches when he's got cushion because every ball is 4 feet above his head. Our WRs never even had a chance to make a play on the majority of his throws. I understand that there's not much separation and our outside skill is trash-tier, but you have to give Lenzy and Styles a shot.

Did he think Book could?

Cuz he was boring with a 3 year starter / NFL draftee.

How is it Merriwether could not get in with that WR room in front of him?

I noticed Irish breakdown is not having a YouTube post game video. Perhaps Bryan Driskell a.k.a. Tommy Rees’ Ball-Licker is not feeling too well.

Rees is really good at scripting his first couple drives. But it all goes downhill from there until it devolves into QB draw every third down and a bunch of sweeps and fades.

I feel like they cut to Freeman a few times and he was just counting down the days on his lease until he can turn Rees back in to Swarbrick for a new model OC that has the recruiting feature and also the in game adjustment package.

I wish I knew all my takes in this thread but I'm really really really done with Tommy.

Dan Mullen was doing ESPN studio work today. There's the first name.
My issue with Mullen is that he absolutely cannot recruit.

I’m with you. We can argue recruiting, development, etc., BUT the play calling was pretty much what it had to be for the circumstances IMO.

The strategy was disappointing, nobody wants to see “my offensive strategy is limit the other team’s offense from scoring, because I know we can’t with the personnel on the field,” but what can you do?

I truly think this is a 60 minute horror show if TR goes full tilt. Team had the Shoe sounding like a library for like 35 minutes of game time.

These arguments/excuses will hold zero water the rest of the way, however. Next 11 are all “score points and start bringing in guys who can help you do that, or worry about your job status end of season.”

You were happy with the play calling in the red zone on the 1st drive?

If Salerno doesn't make a circus catch we lose by 18.

He had one good play call on the fake toss PA.
That isn't a good first half thats a blind squirrel finding a nut.
Did not say he was perfect but hard to call a game consistently when your o-line is constantly blown off the ball. Places significant limits on the playbook and opens opportunities for the defense. To be fair, the weak o-line showing should have been obvious to the entire coaching staff in fall camp and they should have game planned accordingly. The bright side is the defense is top 5. And Buchner will be special by late in the season.

I had no problem with the game plan until the second half. You needed to score at least one TD to win, OSU was not going to be held down all second half. You had to start opening it up.

Instead it just felt like a white flag once OSU took the lead. Felt like the Brian Kelly just don’t get embarrassed but then get embarrassed method of playing good teams.

He may thrive with the backing of Freeman's recruiting machine. Assistant coaches aren't left on an island like under Krawfish Kelly.

I'm by no means married to the idea, just the first name I threw out after seeing him today.

Lots of hot takes. People expected to dominate a Buckeye defense tonight that played poorly in '21, but was full of talent and got a massive upgrade in defensive coaching. Let this be a lesson to those that thought it takes weeks or years for a coordinator to make an impact.

OL still needs work. WR group is what we thought it was. Jury is still out on Buchner. Bright spots are TEs and RBs right now, but that's about it offensively.
