While that Rees quote has a lot of truth in it, it's a lot harder to create that space if the safeties don't need to be worried about keeping your wideouts in front of them.

Agreed, most horizontal concepts work because the outside receivers at least one is running an alarm route vertical, if the D doesn’t have to devote a Safety to that they can just crowd the middle

Interesting just offensive concepts article.

If the Keys hype can be somewhat real. A slot combo of Davis/Keys/Kyren/Tyree/Mayer can be a nightmare

That article is why JOK's value should be through the roof and he should be taken in the first 15 selections. He can mirror the explosive slot and fill the running lanes and arrive with violence.

that’s what you call a happy coincidence

Isn't that literally what the west coast style offense is? Short horizontal space throws.... meh

Agreed, but it doesn't just have to be an outside WR. Any clear out or alarm is good. A slot or even a TE can run a clear out. Just depends on the Ds we are playing. I typically prefer clear outs coming from the inside as they screw up LB coverage and draw a S. But I do love it from the outside too, and a good sail route to the slot or TE.

Fuck the haters. Took a mostly new group on offense and scored 38 points in regulation in Game 1, in prime time and in Tallahassee on "Bobby Bowden" night. We had a couple hiccups, but he had Coan prepared and at times we looked lethal. Just gotta get the OL squared away maybe and we could be more consistent.

The Austin TD, a play calling breakdown:

- It is 3rd and 1 outside field goal range, clear 4 down territory.

- ND is to the left hash and Austin alone on the far side.

- 1 S is up, leaving a FS in the middle of the field.

- Mayer motions out to the short side which inevitably draws the attention of the FS. Coan now knows he has 1-1 coverage with Kevin Austin unless the S can make a insane recovery, Kyle Hamilton confirmed not on FSU.

Pretty A+ call and execution

Ballsy yet smart call and I'm here for it.

Two TDs on 3rd and short-ish, a screen play called at the perfect time and he dialed up a few other opportunities for this team but they couldn't execute. Mayer dropped two 3rd down completions alone. I think this team has a lot of talent and it looks like Rees is feeling out his talent as well. That was a tough first assignment: raucous crowd, new personnel almost across the board, an above average defense and you lose your starting LT and 2nd TE mid-game and then your defense shits the bed and makes it even harder on you because 38 pts isnt' enough to pull out the W.

Call me crazy, but what do you guys think about Tommy going West Coast offense this year? Clearly the passing game is > running game because of the OLine, but the crux of that is pass pro is pretty bad too. So why not use short, horizontal passes to setup the running game and vertical passing game? Unlike with Book, Coan has already proven the ability (and almost as important - willingness) to go over the top. Should keep defenses honest.

I think they will have to work on plays getting the ball out of his hands quickly if the OL doesn’t show progress in short order.

I think the offense will be pass-heavy, mainly because it has to be.

Even while Notre Dame as ascended to elite, or nearly elite status, the Achilles heal of this program has been a general inability to run the ball inside IMO. Sometimes that is combined with a WR corp that can't get separation, creating a situation wherein Notre Dame gets exposed by a team with strength at DL and CB. In 2018, USC exposed this and Clemson made the Irish pay in the playoffs. 2020 was the same way, Notre Dame was averaging 38ppg in the regular season. Simply put, anyone who could stop the run with six in the box and then play zone, or who could play Notre Dame's receivers one-on-one and load the box, was going to be a real problem for Kelly & Co.

So I think this offense is going to be different primarily because the WR/TE corp is seriously improved. I don't think you can play Mayer one-on-one, ever. Austin looks like the truth. The whole cast looks better than what we've seen for years.

Maybe the OL gels as the season goes along but IMO the general approach is the same for every team: put your run-blocking guys on the right of the line and your biggest OT at LT to pass block. I was seriously disappointed by the lack of a push by the right side of the line. Not a good sign at all.

I think Wisconsin will be the first team in the "can stop the run with six guys in the box and flood zone" and will give Notre Dame serious problems.

If I'm a DC I'm not blitzing a ton against ND. Notre Dame likes to run horizontally too much and your blitzer can't scrap over the top if the blitz is picked up. Notre Dame had trouble with this concept last night. Everyone is criticizing the three-man front and forgetting that even when Notre Dame would run 4-2, Florida State would put trips bunched on one side and pulled the guard and tackle the opposite way....and Notre Dame wouldn't scrap over the top to get to the RB. FSU ran that play like 10x lol

If Austin and Lenzy are truly ready to take it to the next level, then I would say a pass heavy offense would be necessary unless the OL gels. The last time the OL reloaded it took Quinn some time to get them in fighting form and cohesive.

Tommy called some plays we haven't seen from the play book in a long time. The timing of the screen was perfect. Would have liked to see a few more counters to offset the aggressiveness, but Tommy gets an A- from me.

Can we please run an occasional wildcat? WHo would be the right guy to do it? Especially when we are struggling in the run game. Read option won’t be happening with Coan. QB draw maybe.

We're still waiting for Avery Davis to throw the ball.

Really, it's probably best to put Buchner in for some run-first packages if you want to go that route.

Does wildcat make the run game better?

Not endorsing this necessarily, but I was thinking the same thing. Either Buchner to get some burn and reps, or Avery Davis.

No. It worked in like 2002 for the Miami Dolphins for maybe 3 plays before the defense figured it out. Since then the wildcat has gained a cumulative total of 13 yards across all levels of football. (citation needed).

FSU scored a touchdown on us using wildcat
