I am a father of 3-boy 19, girl 1t and boy 10. May have told this before, but since it's the kid thread and this story makes me laugh every time, Ill tell it any way.

So when my first-born, who just started sophomore year at college, was brought home, we literally had no idea how ro change a diaper. My mother in law was there, but only had girls and it had been so long since she changed one, she was less than worthless.

So he's on the changing table (I am laughing already) and his mother and I are standing at his side while my mother in law stands at the end just above his head. We take the diaper off (big rookie mistake without a washcloth ready to cover him) and the cold air hits his junk and he unleashes an epic stream of urine that shoots right over his own head, and into my mother in laws face and open mouth. It then loses steam but continues to decorate the front of her shirt down to the waistline of her pants.

I started laughing so hard I could not stand up while my mother in law was frozen in place, her face petrified with a look of horror and dotted with fresh drops of golden baby urine. I probably laughed for 20 minutes until I could gain my feet.

I still laugh every time I think k of it. Lesson learned. From then on we always had a washcloth in hand when opening his diaper.

Good stuff, Georgia!

My daughter had her first soccer game yesterday. She's kinda shy, so she doesn't really have the spirit to mix it up and chase after the ball, she kind of just stands there or kind of follows behind the pack. Knowing this, and the fact coach had her in at goalie quite a bit at practice, we worked on her goalie skills last week....and she's pretty good! During the game she got to see the field a lot, but no time in the goal. Every other kid got to be goalie twice. I think part of the problem is the coach doesn't know any of the kid's names. In a soccer dad moment all I could think was "Why is he keeping her on the field, she's too shy to mix it up with the others. Put her in at goalie!" I didn't say anything yet, but I'm thinking of bringing it up in the next game if she's not in there by halftime.

Anyone else ever have to make suggestions to a coach, or am I being pushy and overly soccer dad-ish? These are 5 year olds we're talking about, so everyone plays...to a point where sometimes they call the games early because they can't keep enough kids on the field (boredom, tears, whatever)

Yes, she's just five. lol

I would let it play out a couple games first. Most coaches will move the kids around in the beginning to see where the kids excel. If after, maybe three games, he still hasn't tried her at goal, I would approach him with a "my daughter would really like to give goalie a shot, do you think you could make that happen?"

Hope it goes well!

This. I've coached and I was also the son of a coach... parents. ruin. everything.
My 6 year old is getting ready to start season #2. I've never coached, but I have a close friend who coaches 5-6 year olds. At this point it's not much more than playground soccer with starting to teach the fundamentals. Not much gets sorted out at least until you're 7. Even in club soccer. My middle child played form age 5 up thru 11. Her entire soccer 'career' all she did is as you described. Even when she got older.

***Pretty sure I quoted the wrong post***

One of the best football coaches I ever met was at the head coach in the NLL (suburban Toledo) league and won nine championships of 12 seasons as a head coach. He stopped coaching before my son could play varsity for him. He went on to be a very successful high school administrator and Principal until he retired. I asked him confidentially and privately why he stepped down from coaching when I knew he loved it and the kids so much. His reply was one word. "Parents."

Damn, ya'll harsh  It's not like we're talking organized soccer here, it's 5 year olds. I don't even think the coaches are keeping score during the games here. My problem is my daughter doesn't seem to be enjoying it when she's out on the field, she's just not a ball chaser, she's afraid of getting run over by the pack and she's shy. She really likes being goalie when she's in practice.

Oddly enough it's just a team of 6 kids, I'm not sure why the coach doesn't know any of the kid's names, it's not that hard. I think that's the root of the problem, and maybe why all the other kids got at least two chances in the goal in the first game. He just points to kids and says "you" when he wants them to join the field or do something in practice. He doesn't seem very invested.

Practice last night was about the sorriest thing I've ever seen in my life. Only half the kids showed up, so 3 kids. For the entire hour the coach just had the kids run the entire length of the field kicking the ball, they put it in the goal, then he had them turn around and go the other way. Occasionally he'd interject himself and pass the ball to a kid as they went up the field, but after about 20 minutes the 3 kids were tired and bored so they literally started walking through the drill or they'd go over to the side and sit for 5 minutes gulping down water.

Great thread.

I've stories to tell but will have to review the last 30 years of my life and struggle to edit my rambling.

I might even come up with some pics and some video.

I now know what my next week or two will involve.

Reps to all, "official" or not.

So my Grace Face went on her first over night trip to the little girls house she called last weekend. When dropping her back off the pair make it to the grill and ask what I'm cooking. Grace requested ribs so it is ribs. The other girl very politely asked if she could stay to have some of them ribs. Good laugh. Son caught a bass on a cane pole and a cricket.Could her him when he landed it. Oldest daughter was offered overtime to go work in Tallahassee and didn't hesitate to make that money on a day off. Middle daughter coming home after 3 days with the grandparents. Full dad day

In between all of the meaningless banter of Kelly and the team, it's nice to know that life still goes on. Tomorrow morning, at this time my wife will give birth to our twin boys! I couldn't be more excited and anxious than what I am right now.

Thanks. That's why today will be spent sitting on the couch.

My little guy is 11 weeks, and just slept through the whole night for the third time. 12am-7am like a champ. Not sure what the normal development is in terms of sleep, but I'll take it compared to those first two weeks.

The sleep thing gets better much faster than you'd think.

Congrats!

We are welcoming baby no. 2 in April. Need to get plenty of sleep before then.

My house is fully stocked now with as much caffeine as I could get my hands on.

I was so lucky, Sophia slept through the night almost from day one, even when she would wake it was:

get a bottle
feed her
lay her down between my wife and I

total time like 20 minutes maybe...

and even that lasted for only a couple months.

If anything she wakes us up more now... she gets scared and around 2 every morning she comes into our room to sleep on our floor... I'm a light enough sleeper to where I hear her just about every time.

My son has been pretty easy-going like that when he doesn't sleep through the night. He'll wake up between 2:30am-4am, and rustle around a bit until one of us gets up. Make the bottle, feed him, change the diaper. He's usually asleep before the sleeper is back on. Then he'll sleep again until we get up.

But boy, those 7 hours of nearly uninterrupted* sleep are a difference maker, even compared to having to get up just once haha.

(The only interruption was waking up in a panic several times because the baby hadn't woken up yet. Check for breathing, go back to sleep.)

Getting our dog, 'UND Mack' was a blessing with Sophia's sleep patterns tho, she used to fight and fuss every night, due to being scared, over sleeping in her room... now the dog sleeps in her room and that cures her worries enough for her to go to sleep in her room.

My oldest 2 took about 3 months to sleep fully thru the night. But once my oldest got to about 18 months he would sleep for about 4 hours then get up, come out to the couch, and watch TV till he crashed. At that time it was just me raising 2 kids under 18 months. I would sleep right thru it. I'd wake up the next day and the TV would be on cartoons and him on the couch passed out.

If anything she wakes us up more now... she gets scared and around 2 every morning she comes into our room to sleep on our floor... I'm a light enough sleeper to where I hear her just about every time.

The youngest, 6, typically gets laid down for bed by the wife in our bed. Takes 15-30 mins then he gets moved to his. For the longest time around 3-4 years old he'd wake up every single night. Sometimes twice. Once he hit 5 it stopped for the most part. Now he wakes up maybe 1-2 times a month. He'll sit up in his bed and call for one of us. After a short reassurance period he goes right back to sleep

Good stuff, steelhead. I need to break out the Irish gear for my kids. We've been so busy with the kids starting soccer and school for the first time we've been slacking on Saturday mornings.

My 3 sons and I were jumping up and down clapping after the win. It was so awesome. My older two (4 and 2) were singing the fight song. Special dad moment.

Took my 5 year old son to his first game today. He was playing games on my phone during the third quarter, but he was a good trooper and really got into the end. Here he is after we scored to take the lead for good.https://vimeo.com/189485578

No pushups?! Good stuff, glad he got a win. Most of us aren't that lucky in our first outing
