Is anyone going to give it a chance???

I'm actually going to the AZ Hotshots game vs. Salt Lake on Sunday night.

The Hotshots roster includes Nyles Morgan along with:

Will Sutton, Scoobie Wright, QB's Jack Wolford & Trevor Knight

The first games tomorrow night are at 8pm EST on CBS.

I'm mildly hyped. Going with some AZ recruiting analysts so Tosh Baker will be on the docket.

Because football is done for the year, VO is done for the year (Pacers), and IU and ND are struggling in BBall, I'm sure I'll tune in for some.....

Here's an article I read with the ND connections in the AAF. Most interested in Iron and Legends.

Ten Notre Dame Players Pursue NFL Ambitions in New Alliance of American Football
https://www.onefootdown.com/2019/1/...n-football-morgan-riggs-redfield-martini-turk

Ten former Notre Dame Fighting Irish football players will continue their professional careers in the Alliance of American Football, which kicks off its inaugural season Feb. 9.

The AAF is the brainchild of Charlie Ebersol ’05 and Bill Polian, NFL Hall of Fame member and father of current Irish special teams coach Brian Polian. The league has positioned itself as a “second chance” for players still harboring NFL ambitions, while also trying to reinvent the way football is played and broadcast.

There will be a 30-second play clock, fewer replays than the NFL and no extra points or kickoffs. Telecasts — including those on CBS and CBS Sports Network — will eschew “TV timeouts” and have 60 percent fewer commercials than the NFL, league officials say.

There’s also a post-football draw for the players, according to the Washington Post.

“For each season a player spends in the AAF, he will be awarded a year’s scholarship for a post-secondary education, said Justin Tuck, a former defensive end and AAF executive.” (Like Ebersol, Tuck is also a 2005 graduate of Notre Dame.)

Atlanta Legends:

#26 RB Tarean Folston, who played for the Irish from 2013 to 2016. Folston could have played a fifth year somewhere, but opted to try his luck with the NFL instead. He had a tryout with Washington, but it didn’t materialize into anything.

#14 WR Malachi Jones, the younger brother of TJ Jones, a Detroit Lions wide receiver who played for the Irish from 2010-2013.

Arizona Hotshots:

#55 LB Nyles Morgan, who played for the Irish from 2014 to 2017. Morgan was waived by the Chicago Bears after rookie minicamp, then played 10 days for the Tennessee Titans before being waived on cutdown day.

#80 TE Joseph Fauria, who was on the Irish’s 2008 team. He was suspended in June 2009 for a season for “personal reasons” (or, “violation of team rules”) and transferred to UCLA. He played 23 games with the Detroit Lions in 2013 and 2014, catching 24 passes (eight for touchdowns).

Birmingham Iron:

#19 WR Amir Carlisle, who played for the Irish from 2013 to 2015. Carlisle transferred from the USC Trojans after his freshman season. Carlisle signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a undrafted free agent, but was cut before the 2016 season started. He’s spent time with both the B.C. Lions and Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, but hasn’t been on a team since last June.

#20 DB Max Redfield, who played for the Irish from 2013 to 2015. Redfield’s Notre Dame time came to abrupt end after he was charged with possessing a loaded handgun following an August 2016 traffic stop, but he did finish the requirements to earn a bachelor of arts degree in 2018. Redfield played at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as a graduate transfer and also spent time with the Alouettes.

Orlando Apollos:

#20 DB Cody Riggs, a graduate transfer from the Florida Gators who played for the Irish in 2014. Riggs signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent and made the roster. He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a practice squad member in 2017, but was later waived.

#1 P Ben Turk, who kicked for the Irish from 2009 to 2012. Turk signed a “futures” deal with the New York Jets last January, but was waived by the team before final cutdowns in August.

Salt Lake Stallions:

#45 LB Greer Martini, who played for the Irish from 2014 to 2017 and was a team captain. Martini signed with the Green Bay Packers after impressing at a rookie minicamp and was on the team’s practice squad until October. He then tried out for the Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts, but to no avail.

San Antonio Commanders:

#49 LS Scott Daly, who snapped for the Irish from 2013 to 2016. Daly had a rookie minicamp tryout with the Bears and was a member of the Dallas Cowboys from April to September of last year.

San Diego Fleet:

#60 OT John Montelus, who played for the Irish from 2014 to 2016. He then spent a graduate year with the Virginia Cavaliers, before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Lions. The Lions cut him on Sept. 1, when trimming their roster to 53 players.

Works out good for the three of us with ATL, PHX and San Antonio having teams. San Antonio has nice uni's. AZ's are a bad Packers uni w/ red highlights and ATL's look like a '90's FUBU take on the Vikings.

I wonder how they'll handle their draft next year?

Will they have the same rules regarding taking players after 3 years of college?

Have no clue, but i hope they are not bound by any rules relevant to years of college. I'd love to see some kids that simply couldn't make it in college. And i'd love to see them do well and make to the bigs. Maybe we'll see some no-college older guys try their luck too.

I only saw an article about the AAF drafting QBs. Nothing on other players.

I hope this translates into a real farm league, but not beholding to specific NFL teams.

Thought the below was both LOL and interesting

I think they are going to march with the NFL. The AZ SLC game tomorrow night is on the NFL Network.

Now the XFL? They'd draft straight out of HS if they're smart.

There's just no cities I care about. Now the XFL has Dallas with Stoops coaching. That's interesting to a degree. And I like the Cowboys.

On a side note, the XFL will have no WWE elements in it this time. Just serious football with billiions invested. McMahon has put in 500 million himself. They seem to be serious and willing to lose money for years if that's what it takes. I hope it works out.

They gotta figure out the tv deals tho. I'd watch most weeks but I'm not getting CBS sports network. Did they change that?

Are there any rules differences from the NFL?
There are several significant ones:

The most notable one is no kickoffs, which is something Polian insisted on if he was going to be involved. They did this because data they collected said the kickoff was largely a non-dynamic play where the largest number of injuries occurred. Also, fans and players dislike the kickoff on the whole, and it affects overall game time. Instead, the ball starts on the 25-yard line after each score or at the start of the game.

Instead of an onside kick, if a team is trailing by 17 points or there's five minutes or less left in the fourth quarter, a team can attempt an onside conversion. They get the ball on their own 28-yard line and have to convert a fourth-and-12. If they do, they keep the ball and keep going. Don't convert, and the opponent takes over from the point at which they stop them.

There are no extra point kicks, so a team is going for two after every touchdown.

Overtime rules have the ball starting on the 10-yard line with four downs and a two-point extra point if a team scores (field goals are not allowed).

There's also a significant change in pass-rushing rules for defenses. Teams can rush only five players and can't blitz players from the secondary. If you have five men on the line of scrimmage on defense, those are the only players who can rush. "With less than a month to get our teams ready to play, the hardest part to get cohesiveness in is the offensive line," Polian said. "So if we came with all the exotic blitzes that we see, which is basically coming out of the secondary, they couldn't pick it up and we're going to get quarterbacks hurt, and it's not much of a game, honestly. Nobody wants to see the quarterback sacked repeatedly."

With replays, officials won't have to go under the hood or watch a tablet. Instead, the official will have an earpiece to communicate directly on the field with the replay official in real time. All of this is designed to help shorten game times. The hope is for games to be two and a half hours or less.

They should use the arena football rule that eliminated taking a knee at the end of games.

I'm hopeful that this does a blow to football factories and maybe has a positive impact in other ways (shorter games, etc) on the sport in general

I hope one or both of the new leagues do go after HS kids. This would thin the herd for the factories & actually be an advantage to ND, IMO. Also, if there are kids who truly can’t afford to get by on what college offers or that have no interest in pursuing a degree, this gives them an option. They won’t be millionaires but they should earn more dough than what they would get going to college.

XFL is supposedly drafting out of high school. Another reason why I'm looking forward to XFL.

The Pacific Pro Football is trying to get Trevor Lawrence for the next few years. So I think 2 of the 3 new leagues are willing to take NFL ineligible players.

Also I didn't realize the the AAF teams are all associated with specific colleges and professional teams. So the NFL (or CFL) team that you most recently played on determines which AAF team you are on, and if that doesn't apply then you go to the team associated with your college. I guess its a good way to get local interest. Figures though that ND isn't associated with any specific team. However, both Southern Cal and Stanford are associated with San Diego, so I'm definitely not cheering for them.

Wow if this is successful it’s going to change the NCAA scene big time, IMO.

I wonder what the NCAAs viewpoint is on this. Could be taking some pressure off of them with not having to pay student athletes.

The product isn't terrible. Crowd seems into it at least.

Families look at it as similar to minor league baseball. It’s not the elite talent but it’s a heckuva lot more affordable than what it costs to take a family of four to an NFL or NCAA football game.

Saw that...they should use the silhouette of that for the league's symbol, like pistol Pete for the nba.

Guys, go home, you're drunk.

I didn't disrespect Pete at all.

This league needs their own symbol. I suggested a big blast of a tackle.

Doubt it affects the big boys much. Maybe the Ole Miss types. Salaries aren’t enough to keep kids from going to a place like Bama or Clemson where the facilities and coaching are top notch.

This might be horrible timing for the XFL again.

It's the NFL trying to cut them off at the knees. Part of their working with the AAF was on the condition that they started a year earlier than the XFL.

AAF wants to be a minor league and XFL wants to be a rival league.
