Hopefully it involves some field turf

I still don't get this mentality. They've confirmed they're getting a new surface. They'll go the major natural grass overhaul route if possible. People are acting like the choice is between "shitty real grass" and "field turf." They've taken "shitty real grass" off the table. If they stick with natural grass they've confirmed it will be a real fix this time.

I don't get the mentality of someone who can't understand that someone might have a differing opinion.

They've tried a "real fix" before in the recent past as well. Didn't work.

I think it's pretty naive to think that, at this point with all the mounting evidence, that a decent and sustainable natural grass playing surface can be maintained in South Bend. Therefore, shitty grass is very much still in play.

Field turf is GUARANTEED to give you a consistent playing surface.

Natural grass always has the chance of failing in some fashion no matter how hard they try to "do it right."

Try to follow. I undertsand that he HAS a differing opinion. I don't understand the opinion itself. That's why I asked. I'm trying to educate myself, not show how much of a smartass I am.

Swarbrick was talking about a deep dig and a major overhaul unlike anything they've ever done. Is that incorrect? I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm honestly unfamiliar with what they've done in the past besides the most recent resoddings.

New design has room for two video boards. Bigger one in south end zone, smaller north end. Apparently next week all the plans will emerge after board of trustees meeting in Rome..

Pete says field turf will be in before next season. Huge.

"Square" north and south? There were rumors awhile back about using the corners, but I think true north and south would be much cleaner.

Just a couple years ago they did a major overhaul of the drainage systems when they were working on the lower bowl replacing concrete, etc. The outer rim of the playing field--where the sidelines are--was replaced with something artificial and was supposed to help drainage. That's in addition to have the country's top expert help with the field in the past not to mention the innumerable new sods they've laid down over the years.

I don't know what Jack meant by digging deep. It sounds super expensive and risky.

At any rate, with the new stadium renovations the structure itself is going to get even larger and let in even less sunlight.

There is a very high probability for an artificial surface.

Apparently the structure on the south side of the end zone is wider than the width of the football field, so I suppose a corner board isn't out of the question, but he doesn't say exactly.

this has been my experience

...drainage has two components (that I know of)...the surface and whats under it. For real grass fields...the surface is a yearly fight, and because the surface requires dirt its hard for the uinder field situation to not immediately start degrading...it just starts to silt in. With field turf "stasis" for lack of a better term, is longer lived, and easier to regain....yielding the same surface in November as August, and from season to season...

I think If we want a home field advantage we achieve it with stadium design...and continued winning...not shitty grass...:)

Its hard enough to see Touchdown Jesus in the stadium, you put a jumbotron on the North end and the view is completely gone. You gotta put them in the corners. One above student section and the opposite corner. Pump music and noise through them both. It will add to the student section and help drown out the opposing fans sitting in their alloted area.

Would love to see a huge one in the South endzone and 2 smaller ones in the corners in the North Endzone. Don't want to lose the view of Touchdown Jesus anymore than we already have.

The video in the north endzone better have a digital image of Touchdown Jesus that spikes the ball every time we score.

SRSLY!

what if you build the jumb tron with Hi res cameras in the back which project TD Jesus as the default image on the screen and at times throughout the game???

Pretty sure the Packers role out lights to help the grass. I'm sure ND could theoretically do that, but to me, it's just a desperate move to avoid the inevitable. Put in turf, and be done with it. I hope what Pete is saying is accurate and we can put this to rest.

I think some of the systems may build heating coils underneath the grass to help it.

Problems with moisture and drainage?

What if we built a large, <strike>wooden badger</strike> dehumidifier?

I'm firmly in the court of putting down the best surface possible for our athletes if it means we can better utilize their speed, but part of me often wonders how much of a benefit we might get against those teams that come to South Bend with more athleticism than us. For example, under BK we've done very well against MSU and I think the difference has been talent level and not necessarily coaching. We've just got more athleticism in my opinion. We've had some struggles at times later in the season with some teams, especially when the field has deteriorated. I wonder if this benefits the less athletic teams by causing poor footing and leveling the playing field. Then again, this kind of situation could be an equalizer against a team like Florida State when they come to town.

Paul Lukas of the Uni-Watch blog had this little blurb. Nothing new, just mentioning...

Irish update: My little birdie has checked in regarding the plans for Notre Dame Stadium. “Updated renderings will be released soon after the Notre Dame board meeting, with an official announcement excepted late next week,” he says. “Overall, the design will be similar to what was previously released, which has the press box moving to the east side and a new structure replacing the existing press box. The design definitely has spots for two video-style boards.”

I haven’t confirmed any of this. But this source has been on the money for everything else, including Notre Dame’s move from Adidas to Under Armour

So it's going to look like the Big House......great :/
Well, maybe a press box on the east side will help to redirect some crowd noise back towards the field.
I will withhold any judgment until I actually see the designs. I confident that what ever we do it will look great.
