This is *especially* true in chaotic media environments where nuanced arguments are particularly difficult to convey. Michigan wasn’t, “sign stealing.” They were, “code cracking.”

THAT’S how this activity should be referenced from now on 100% of the time: “code cracking.”

People will still hotly debate the specifics of the methodologies used, the meaning of various NCAA rules, and how it applies to Michigan’s specific case of course. But as Michigan fans, what nobody here should endorse is people casually throwing around the term, “sign stealing.” Not only does it needlessly muddy what’s already a potentially complicated case, it also unfairly prejudices Michigan in the court of public opinion before the full set of facts can even get presented.

This is another paywall article (sorry) but here’s the goods -

“Several sources told The Detroit News on Wednesday that phones and tablets were obtained by the NCAA this week. Investigators obtain the data from those devices via mirroring, which projects the contents to another device.”

“The next step in the NCAA process is conducting interviews, which could begin in the next few days, and investigators likely will start with Stalions to then determine how to proceed.”

My fear is that this Stallion guy seems a little unstable... Michigan is going to try to make him look like the lone gunman and maybe he is dumb enough to take one for the team.

If they actually have evidence of a budget for this operation that excuse flies out the window and the NCAA hates being lied to.

Read through that WaPo article a second time. So, they planned to watch 8 OSU games this season alone. 40 games oof 10 opponents on the schedule for this season alone.

And the WaPo article says (see the bolded).

The outside firm also presented to NCAA officials photographs of people investigators believed to be Michigan scouts in action — including current students interning with the football team. The photos showed these people seated at games of Michigan opponents this season, aiming their cellphones at the sidelines. Days later, the outside firm told the NCAA, cellphone videos depicting the coaching staffs from these games were uploaded to a computer drive maintained and accessed by Stalions as well as several other Michigan assistants and coaches.

40 games with a budget of 15K is 375 a game and that sounds light if lodging is included.

If these leaks keep coming and they keep getting worse and worse for Michigan I could see harbaugh getting canned for this. The university probably already writing up “for cause” scenarios

Also I’m guessing it’s safe to assume Michigan had “scouts” at the ND Ohio state game this year?
