Billy Napier, WR coach, leaves Alabama for OC at Arizona State.

Recruiting impact of Alabama assistant Billy Napier leaving for Arizona State

Napier has built a solid rapport with all the receiver recruits even if they didn't come from his prime recruiting areas of Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas.

This year, he played a key role in 6-foot-6 receiver Tyrell Shavers' recruitment along with Texas tight ends Major Tennison and Kedrick James.

But for immediate impact, two key receivers remain uncommitted in Montgomery's Henry Ruggs III and Amite, La., standout Devonta Smith. Monroe, La., defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis also bonded with Napier. Both Ruggs and Smith are expected to announce their college decisions on Wednesday.

Ruggs also has a strong bond with defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley, but Napier has been the prime assistant in Smith's recruitment.

LSU is making a strong push for Smith going into Wednesday's National Signing Day, so Alabama fans have to hope that Smith's relationship with Louisiana players such as Shyheim Carter will remain a key factor. He also has mentioned Tide assistants Burton Burns, Jeremy Pruitt and staffer Sam Petitto as other people that he's close to on Alabama's staff.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Smith is one of the country's most electric receiver and ranked as a five-star recruit by the 247Sports individual rankings.

Hiring a strength coach, who is bringing no one with him, to actually do what he does as an essential member of your team and that can actually fail, is light years away from hiring a head coach to bring a top recruit and then just sit in an office and collect a pay check.

If the HC is good enough to actually coach, like a Malzahn, have at it.

The rule should be, no hiring any coaches or relatives into support/analyst roles the same year you give a kid a college scholarship, without a direct waiver from the NCAA. Exceptions should be made where the coach has gotten offers for other jobs in the same role in institutions that are not offering the kid a scholarship.

Cautionary tale in here somewhere for coaches...Don't wait, Don't PUNT...it is your reputation, and your program on the line here. I can't speak to Macintyre's character with what little is int he article, only that the image of him being a man of character is TOAST.

It makes no sense dicking around...even if the victim is heehawing around about not wanting bad stuff to happen. The answer is, thanks for your concern...here is what we are going to do, then You, the AD, VPs, whomever gotta act on it. If the first person to contact the victim is a defense attorney for the accused, you might have your priorities AFU...And if you are the Head Coach, and that happens, thats your fault.

What if who was wrong? The abused girlfriend who was able to present phone records, texts, police reports, her story clearing and being corroborated by a police investigation, and being verified in court so as a judge was willing to issue a permanent protective order for her against the sh1t-bag? There is no wrongly accused. A third party filed a report against this piece of work.

You don't think the shit bag had others that he punched around?

And you don't think the AD, attorney, coach and a couple of others haven't folded like a cheap suit, spilling everything?

You know she is telling the truth, and though misguided for thinking she could straighten him out, she is of fairly strong moral character. She could have mopped up financially, and she didn't even go for it.

Was he ever on it?

In on what? The abuse? No, but he clearly knew and did nothing about it. He actually went the opposite way and tried to promote him to DC. No excuse in my book to not suspend the guy immediately.

That went over your head homie.

I meant, why would we have to "take him off the potential coach list" if he was never on the list to begin with?

Too early to get on here apparently. Some had mentioned him after the season as a potential candidate if Kelly moved on.

All of that certainly suggests need for moving deliberately. Here is the thing for me. As the Football coach, he should move with the information. He should involve local authorities who are trained to unravel the truth, nuance, etc. Weighing circumstances, and as information becomes available, you make determinations about what to do with the accused coach. No one is saying fire him, or even suspend him upon becoming aware of the accusation. But you do need to MOVE in a way that is reasonable. By reasonable...well, if someone picks up the paper and reads this story, as a person can the coach be proud of his conduct. Does it speak to his integrity. When it is all said and done it is the head football coach's name associated with this stuff. Folks in that seat better get comfortable understanding that their career is impacted...not some clown in the dean's office, or even some VP at the university.

I agree what your saying but say on the off chance they go through reporting and then there's big litigation where the victim gets ate alive in court where her credibility is suspect then the fired secondary coach sues the school and head coach and what not

Just saw that Rhule's S&C guy at Baylor was arrested in a prostitution ring.

It was reported yesterday in the Baylor thread which for some reason is in the Notre Dame Football Forum.
