Unreal... what a terrible hire.

- Fired from Wake Forest
- Fired from the Colts
- Came in to "mentor" Flacco and he proceeds to have worst year of his career.
- Hired as Lions head coach.

wut?

Really glossing over why he's getting this job. The Ravens did not suck this year because of Caldwell and Flacco, they sucked because their OL/RBs got hurt and terrible. Plus many of their skill position players they were counting on to be receiving threats missed LOTS of time.

Why he got hired is that after the Ravens fired Cam Cameron last year, Caldwell went on to dominate in the playoffs with an explosive vertical passing attack. 24, 38, 28, and 34 against quality opponents. Couple that with his years of experience as a QB coach, and they're hoping he's the right guy to develop Stafford. This whole franchise hinges on being able to scheme a dominant vertical passing game for Megatron while he is still in his prime. Obviously, Whisenhunt was the #1 choice to see if Stafford could be developed, but Caldwell had the next best resume.

Great job by UGA bringing in Pruitt. Great coach and a great recruiter. As long as he's in Athens it's going to be very difficult to get kids to leave Georgia. On a side note, this very well could ensure that Marlon Humphrey goes to Alabama.

Disagree on Pruitt. The guy is a first class hag and has been since his days at Hoover. The way he bad mouthed Bama when he left. Gave him his first big break and then to run the school down. I hope he fails miserably at Ga. Forget him.

So He did well working with Flacco this season?

Under Caldwell this season, the Ravens were 29th in total offense (307.4 yards a game) and 25th in scoring (20 points a game). Quarterback Joe Flacco, who Caldwell was brought in to mentor, threw more interceptions (22) than touchdown passes (19) this season.

That's something Flacco never did until this season. It was also his worst QB rating of his career.

His other QB "mentoring" was Manning. Let's be real... he didn't have to do much there. lol

Yeah but Richt gets blasted for all the talent he loses to other schools out of state. If he starts keeping more and more of that talent, Ga would be dangerous. Maybe not with Richt as coach, but the Ga job in the future would be tremendous with the right fit.

I get that there is tons of talent in Ga, but do Florida fans get pissed when a top talent leaves the state?

Do you know which SEC school has had the most draft picks since 2000?
UGA has 82
Bama has 64
Florida has 73
LSU has 75
UT has 67
Carolina had 45

Point being, that since Richt has been the head coach, they have had no talent issues. Heck, Bama only has one more pick since 2010's draft (although they did have more highr round picks).

I get the sensitivity to keeping talent home, but that only makes sense to me if talent is an issue in the overall roster, which it is not nor has it been.

Sounds like you're making it personal T Town. I feel the same way about Nick Saban, being a Dolphins fan. Lied to the fans, lied to the organization and then snuck out of Miami without even discussing it with the players. Same type of hag, in my opinion.

Did you not read what I said? Sentence #2:
The Ravens did not suck this year because of Caldwell and Flacco, they sucked because their OL/RBs got hurt and terrible. Plus many of their skill position players they were counting on to be receiving threats missed LOTS of time.

No reasonable person thinks Flacco and the offense regressed this year because of Caldwell. Everyone points to their plague of injuries and non-existent rushing offense. Look for the variable that changed, and there's your cause/effect. Makes sense he had his worst year ever with:
-No Bolden
-Worst OL he has ever had
-Injuries to Jones/Smith/Pitta
-Injuries to Ray Rice

That's something Flacco never did until this season. It was also his worst QB rating of his career.

His other QB "mentoring" was Manning. Let's be real... he didn't have to do much there. lol

It's not that he's responsible for Manning, or anything like that. Just that he had lots of experience as the QB coach for a great QB, and Manning really liked him by all reports. Then he goes to Baltimore and they fire Cameron at the tail end of a mediocre season, and then Flacco thrives under Caldwell's offense and dominates on a super bowl run.

Clearly, they want a coach whose focus will be on evaluating and developing the QB. Their choice was Whisenhunt, who was a better candidate. Tell me who else is more qualified than Caldwell to come in and evaluate Stafford after Whisenhunt is off the board?

No reason for the indignant response, homie.

No reasonable person thinks Flacco and the offense regressed this year because of Caldwell. Everyone points to their plague of injuries and non-existent rushing offense. Look for the variable that changed, and there's your cause/effect. Makes sense he had his worst year ever with:
-No Bolden

That opinion is fine, but his OL didn't throw picks, his receivers didn't throw the picks and his RB's didn't throw his picks. Tom Brady had all of the same issues and still found a way to be effective. You may think that i'm not reasonable for putting some of that blame on Caldwell, but there is a LOT of people both in media and Ravens fans that wholeheartingly agree with the premise.

Caldwell was fired two weeks before the end of the season. They didn't install a brand new offense during that time. Many Ravens fans considered Caldwell to be the "defacto OC" during that time. The reality is that every coaching job Caldwell has gotten, he either inherited because of someone getting fired from and/or got fired himself.

Clearly, they want a coach whose focus will be on evaluating and developing the QB. Their choice was Whisenhunt, who was a better candidate. Tell me who else is more qualified than Caldwell to come in and evaluate Stafford after Whisenhunt is off the board?

They didn't pick Caldwell because of his talents, they picked him because he was the only coaching candidate left in the market with any head coaching experience. If they really wanted a QB centered coach, they could have went with someone like McDaniels (yikes) or McAdoo. Both have proven abilities to improve QB play. Caldwell has Manning (who he did little or no coaching) and one year of Flacco (his worst ever) as his QB mentoring resume.

If they were looking for just better candidates... I think Zimmer (Cin), Quin (Sea) and Munchak are all better candidates. But again... it shouldn't have came down to this tier of candidate. They should have hired one of the better options before they got hired elsewhere. The most talented team looking for a coach ended up with Caldwell.

But isn't that a silly criteria for selecting a head coach? The head coach is responsible for the whole team, not just the QB.

But can't that be said about BK and the Cinci ordeal?

Not personal with Pruitt. He was given a shot at Bama and then left because he thought he should have received a promotion. His decision to leave and everyone wished him well when he left. Then a month later he is down there running his mouth about Bama. First class jerk IMO.

The reality is that every coaching job Caldwell has gotten, he either inherited because of someone getting fired from and/or got fired himself.

But that's kind of the point. Cam Cameron gets housed, Caldwell steps in and with just his incremental twists to the scheme the Ravens are able to showcase a borderline dominant vertical passing attack to win a super bowl.

They didn't pick Caldwell because of his talents, they picked him because he was the only coaching candidate left in the market with any head coaching experience. He had two years with Flacco. In one, he had a solid year and won a Super Bowl. In that year, he also had a pretty ridiculous 84.4 QBR and 117 passer rating in a dominant playoff run after Caldwell was given control to do what he wanted. In the next, the Ravens gutted their team and then picked up injuries to all the decent players that were left.

The Lions believe they have all the pieces to win and win big EXCEPT consistent QB play and team discipline. They think they can get both with Caldwell. Will they be right? No, probably not because #Lions. And I don't think this is a good hire, I just completely understand why they did it.

I blame that more on Flacco raping the Ravens with that cushy contract he got after the SB. He's set, his motivation went out the window. Happens all the time in sports.

That's fair. We'll see I suppose. That franchise is cursed, so maybe they just need a guy with luck.

I'm actually surprised that there wasn't at least one higher status guy interested though. If I was a coach, I would be drooling over that roster. I guess the management is that bad.

Jim Caldwell to the Lions? Awesome. As a Vikings fan I approve. Perhaps they can hire Leslie Frazier in 2016.

I really hope the Vikings hire Zimmer as their HC. Love the guys fire and passion. It is much needed after 3 and 1/2 years of a catatonic zombie for a coach.

Let’s just say Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer doesn’t look back fondly on his days coaching under Bobby Petrino in Atlanta.

“He’s a gutless bastard. Quote that. I
don’t give a s—,” Zimmer said Wednesday, according to Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

When Zimmer was told that responsible news organization may not be able to use “bastard,” Zimmer responded:

“How about this, gutless MF. You can use that.” (Awesome. Much appreciated.)

Can't wait to see the first on field interaction between Suh and Caldwell. Should be very high on the unintentional comedy scale.

For my fellow Giants out here, I like the OC hire. The staff changes are good too despite Mike Pope being one of the best.
