Game on now on NBC.

Was there a problem with sound all day? Can't hear the crowd at all. Not even the whistles.

Just finished re-watching the game. Golson was one of the first players to congradulate Tommy on the sidelines and he didn't look to upset about it. It was also great to see Davonte Neal lift TR up in victory, I was always shaky on how much he actually wanted to be here.

Just wanted to point out that Mr Arnold got one part of that article totally wrong. The Irish offense was 11-19 on 3rd downs. The defense held Purdue to a paltry 35% (6-17) success rate on 3rd downs. Perhaps it was that Purdue went 3-for-3 on 4th down conversion attempts (including the late game-tying touchdown) that confused him.

After watching every play a few times (thanks to the great poster who has been posting condensed versions of the game on YouTube), it is quite evident that we totally outplayed Purdue. If a couple of things went our way, this would have turned into a blowout in the 3rd quarter. Anyway, moving on to Sparty...

I read that 7 of Purdue's 11 drives were for less than fifteen yards.

Impressive stuff by the defense.

I had no idea Marve went down vs. ND with an ACL tear...again! Really tough break for him and Purdue. He really looked a lot better than Terbush at running their offense. Gotta hope they play tough and get some W's from here on out to make our win look more impressive than it was. I really thought Marve was their best chance offensively at winning their B1G division, now not so sure.

I wish I could share your optimism. I think they are definitely legit good and well coached but I think you have to be able to generate a lot more pass rush than ND does to be top 10. I think they are bordering the top 20 with the ability to go higher, but they can't generate much pass rush and the talent they have should allow them to. It's just Diaco's scheme is not getting it done that well in that particular area.

Our pass rush is fine. We are getting pressure with just our defensive line. Ishaq will be a great pass rusher

Here is what UND has to say:

Oh, yeah, and leave Keith alone. There is a reason he does what he does. The pace he puts his artcles out is truly phenomenal. Try it sometime before you come off with a tone that sounds patronizing; "totally" and "confused him." After all, we treat you with respect. Maybe next time you could PM him, (that is one of the reasons it is there).

These condensed shots are great! Finally blocked off a half an hour to watch the game.

Tuitt is an absolute monster. No news there, but he seemed like he was pressuring on every play.

Nix knocking down two passes on top of a consistent push in the middle, very nice.

Motta seemed pretty solid and wrapped his tackles up well (or maybe all the missed tackles made him look good).

I don't think Tommy could have thrown for 290 in that game and kept a number of those drives alive. Golson is the rightful starter,

Likewise I am not sure Golson could have made that game winning drive. Tommy is the rightful two-minute drill guy.

TJ is getting it done, looking much improved and a reliable #2 WR.

Niklas is half a step off, he should be scary by the end of the year when that half step disappears.

How can you not love Toma? Great hands, good quicks and answers the bell any time he is given an opportunity.

Daniels is showing some flashes, big upside there. Looking to me like he will be the #1 WR this year (behind Eifert of course).

Agree to disagree then. Against subpar opponents we have a few sacks. Ishaq could very well be a great pass rusher, my concern is not with his talent it's with the scheme's ability to generate a pass rush from the CAT position. If you watch the film again, notice how ND never has someone coming free from an LB position and neither the CAT nor the DOG is hardly ever winning on a speed rush to the outside of the tackle. It's not because they don't have the talent to do so its because that isnt' the strength of Diaco's D and I think that's something he will need to continue to improve upon to have a great defense. Alabama doesn't generate a great pass rush from its d-lineman either because of scheme but their linebackers do and their secondary is the best there is so they can compensate for that. ND doesn't fully compensate for it like Bama does. Still a really good D, not arguing otherwise, just haven't had a good pass rush since Diaco has been here.(or before for some time)

Yeah through 2 games the overall number is solid, its how they are getting them and what they are doing with their OLBs that gives cause for concern. Maybe Diaco will show some more interesting looks in the future as his secondary progresses. that's possible. I think he could be more creative with his LBs on obvious passing downs though.

Notre Dame wins the National Championship:
elboricua: ya, well, its how they won the NC... they committed a whopping 12 TO's (that is once a game). Maybe Kelly should have the offense score 40 points a game instead of 30, and maybe Diaco can actually put a good defense on the field and then the games wouldnt be so close!

Bob Diaco has forgotten more about defensive football than most who criticize him on this board ever knew.

Notre Dame runs a 3-4 defense. It is probably the most straight forward defense known to man.

I assume you are talking about my posts. If you don't agree, that's cool. I deal in evidence and reason, not in general statements of meaninglessness like Bob Diaco has forgotten more about football than anyone on this board has ever known, et al. If I see a statement I disagree with, I say something even though I probably shouldn't because most people don't seem to respond to rational disagreement very well. Bob Diaco's defense has pretty constantly shown improvement since he's been here. I like him a lot and think he does a good job, but the development of the linebackers and how he uses them leaves a bit to be desired if you are talking about becoming a top 10 defense. That was the only thing I was disagreeing with. Wasn't saying he wasn't a good coach or anything like that, just that they don't generate much pressure and haven't done so since he became coach with the LBs.

As for Bog's statement, that its a 3-4 defense which is a pretty straightforward defense, what??? I don't even know what you really mean by that. It's not really a helpful statement. There are a lot of ways to run a 3-4 defense and much like the term the "spread" it doesn't tell us too much about the way the defense is run. If you look at other 3-4s in college, most notably Stanford's(since they are usually the best analog to use for ND) under Fangio for example, they were able to get far more pressure with their LBs than ND and ND definitely has more talent. There are many other examples of this, including everyone's favorite on this site(for good reason), Alabama.

If you're serious, I can't stand this kind of crap. If you're not, my apologies. I disagreed with a general statement by another poster that ND was about to be a top 10 defense. I like Coach kelly, don't think ND can get a better coach, don't think they can get a better D coach than Diaco, and also don't believe that ND fans are remotely realistic on the whole about their expectations for the team and I don't need them to win every game. I don't care that much if they ever win another national championship. I care that they graduate players and do what I think is morally right. I'm also not a homer and will disagree with general homer statements I don't feel are grounded in reality. I don't see a big deal with that, I would think an ND board(supposedly a good school with intelligent fanbase) would be ok with that.

They do, but it's why they do that's interesting. Go look at what I said. What about the statement that I made would you say amounts to someone purposely trying to start an argument or debate? By the way, what is wrong with a civil debate or reasoned disagreement? Kind of one of the only reasons to be on of these things dont you think? I try to keep anything I say not personal. I just say if I disagree with something, that's all.

Like for example, I responded to a point in a post about Lane Kiffin and going for 2 points. The only point of making that thread is to insult the USC coach. I responded that I didn't see anything wrong with what he did and then there was a post which said what I said was nonsense. As a general rule, if you make a post that is just a picture or your only statement is that the other post is full of nonsense, it's a pretty good indicator that you don't have a point to make. I can see why when you disagree with people who use this type of reasoning you will rub them the wrong way. I guess I would appeal to the better part of those who engage in this kind of stuff to not waste their time with it and just respond to points made. Anything else becomes a waste of time.

I have a Journalism degree. Publishing articles that contain an incorrect statistic is never acceptable. I tried to find a quick way to message Mr Arnold about it, but I didn't want to take the time to create a profile.

He is very knowledgeable and a good writer, but hastily written work is not an excuse.


EDIT: boricua, you rub people the wrong way because every one of your posts has a condescending, negative tone to it. You'd think we were 0-2 and got steamrolled both games by the way you post. Try to mix in a little optimism and recognition of the positives about our team. What's the point of following the team and the sport as a whole if you get no joy out of it?
