If Daniels threw more interceptions then touchdowns last year and his team can't run against NotreDame's huge defensive line then his only choice it to throw some more interceptions against Notre Dame.

I think it'll be close, but never really in doubt. I mean, I don't expect us to just roll over USF, because I think they're a good team with a young up and coming coach, but I don't think we'll lose either. I expect maybe a 10 pt margin that ends in us running out the clock, something like that. I don't think it will have to come down to a game winning drive, but I also don't think there's any way we come in there and put up 45+ on them blowing them out. It's too early in the season.

ND always makes it's openers more interesting than they should be

This is almost word for word my opinion on the matter.

How about Nevada 2 years ago? This game against USF reminds me a bit of 2009 in terms of people thinking that they could upset the Irish in the season opener.

I think BJ Daniels is going to be good for 2-3 turnovers, but, as i said, I think our offense is going to be conservative for 2 quarters before they bang off the rust. Cierre will have a big game. I think ND wins comfortably, but won't be in a position to throw in the entire scout team.

Michigan, ND comes out hard out of the gate

If somebody said you’re picking an upset, I’d say, that’s not an upset, an upset is what his mother would be if I picked against her son,” Lou said last week at a fundraiser in South Florida. “There’s no way in the world I’d cheer against my son. Make no mistake, I want the world to know, I am for the South Florida Bulls.

As admirable (and expected) as it is to keep family first and pick USF, I have to disagree w/ Coach on this one. I think our defense is too good and our offense will score enough to put this game out of reach late in the game. 31-13 ND

I hear you. I think we win in a closely fought game. But these mistakes by Daniels people keep bringing up can just as easily be mistakes made by Dayne or Cierre. I know it's fun to speculate and to have high hopes, but I've been burnt too much by the Irish to think we're going to destroy them. If it happens, that's great, but I'm going in there with the mindset that they can just as easily beat us as we can them.

Dayne's interceptions per attempt (0.02) last year was very good, and that was as a first year starter. As a second year starter with a much improved OL, run game, and defense, there's no reason to think Dayne won't take care of the ball.

As for Cierre, his 2010 fumblitis was very typical for a RB in his first year. He's reportedly improved his ball security significantly, but we don't have much more to go on than that. I doubt we'll lose many turn-over battles in 2011.

Skip Holtz goes into the game with a huge problem how not let his QB Daniel's throw interceptions To do that he must have a run game against Notre Dame's 300 pounders on defense to take the pressure off Daniels. I doubt that will happen and Daniels will throw interceptions.

Agreed. USF will struggling running against our front seven, which will force Holtz to put the game on Daniels' arm. At that point, we're in the driver's seat.

I think ND is much more likely to smother USF's offense than it is to hang 30+ points on the Bulls' defense.

What's with all this "slow out of the gate" talk??? BK has had one season with these kids and we started slow because of a new regime...

Charlie Weis' teams are a different story. Brian Kelly will have these guys foaming at the mouth and ready to destroy.. but prepared and focused at the same time.

Mark my words, we will not get off to a slow start. ND 34 USF 13

Defense wins this one. But SF gets great field position on 2 possessions due to turn-overs, converting them into field goals.

ND - 24
SF - 6

Offense Execution

Offense Execution

It seemed to me last year when Crist, Rees and the offensive line executed they went right through defenses. This year with the whole offense more used to the spread formation and both Crist and Rees more experienced I would expect Notre Dame offense to be much better this year. I suspect defenses stopping them won't be the problem rather if they execute few defenses will stop them. Plus I believe their huge defensive line will get the offense back the ball much quicker this year. I look to Skip Holtz to grab bag it starting out with a lot of roll outs and trick plays. I look to Kelly to test his run game soon to get a handle on how well they can run. If they have problems running then Crist will be running for his life like Clausen. So Kelly will want to find out quick about his run game.

I think this will be a declaration for the season. The IRISH are going to come out pumped up and just thrash the bulls.

30-17. ND will lead early and USF will score a late TD but it will be too little too late. Skip Holtz will have a fine year but it won't start out well and he will be left questioning if his offense is as good as he thought it was after Te'o and co manhandle them so thoroughly!

Very concerned about this game as you guys know from my other posts. The 'Irish' are not elite yet and unlike other BCS players we dont start off with easy scrimmages. This will be a close game and the real question is how will the fan base react. I want to be wrong and have been nervy about this game all summer. Kelly must win this game. My eyes are on the O line to control this first game. All the media types are on the bandwagon-that scares me too.
