He's definitely got the athleticism for it, but I don't think that'll work for a couple reasons: (1) he's going to be lined up over Funchess most of the time, who will probably be UM's most dangerous weapon; and (2) a "spy" still has to fulfill other duties while he watches the QB. I doubt Jaylon has the ability to multi-task like that yet.

How Smith/Councell play is another intriguing part of this game. Last year, Spond was nearly flawless holding the edge. Michigan wanted to pull guards and run power plays outside, but Spond would not budge on the edge and our pursuit caught up. Can Smith/Councell hold the edge? Gonna be interesting.

If Michigan wants to dink and dunk they can rack up the yards and score very little

If Michigan wants to pound it with a run game, half their drives will be 3& outs

If Michigan wants to take shots deep, Gardner eats 3lbs of turf before its over.

If we take care of the ball we win by 10+ points. Could be a lot more but we will eat the clock and secure the win.

Recruits will be watching
[+] Enlarge
Scott Fink for ESPN
No. 4 recruit Da'Shawn Hand will be one of several top recruits in Michigan on Saturday to watch the Wolverines take on the Fighting Irish.
Every week during the college season, there are two or three games that attract top prospects and captivate the recruiting audience. After Georgia-Clemson did that in Week 1, there are three games sure to have recruits watching this weekend.
1. Notre Dame at Michigan -- This game brings out top prospects every year. This year will be no different. Five-star DE Da'Shawn Hand (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) will be making an official visit. In the 2015 class, the No. 1 overall prospect, DE Jashon Cornell (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) will be on hand, as will No. 7 Tim Settle (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and many others.
Floyds back yard, just another great reason to pummel them and ESPN! This Hand kid looks like the real deal!

Lewan will be tied up with Tuitt, but not all game. Last year when Tuitt came out we used KLM over Lewan in our 3-4. We also used KLM in the first haf at NT to spell Nix . In fact, KLM barely came off the field and his motor was strong all game long. He had an amazing game. Will substituting Tuitt with Ishaq Williams be the same as KLM? Or Jones or Rochelle? The offseason hype was that Ishaq could now play as a 3-4 DE. Will we substitute Nix in the 1st half again, and will Kona be as good as KLM?

These are some of the intriguing chess pieces to the game imo.

i know it was Temple, but Nix played the most snaps i have ever seen him and BK mentioned this today in the presser

My very amateurish opinion for defending Gardner would be to use GRACE as the spy. Jaylon just got a little too confused several times vs Temple, but he DID react off his man pretty well when he was needed in support tackling.

Grace was to my eye by far the quickest to intuit the plays and then actually motor post haste in the correct direction. Fox would be a second choice, but unless we choose to do this with a safety [we could], I think that Jarrett is the man for this. In fact, I'm hoping that we see Foxabreese olde-style more, sharing WILL, and Grace imitating Te'o at MIKE.

We showed an AWFUL LOT of four man front vs Temple. Was it a ploy, or was it an omen?

We may see 4 man front quite a bit this year, with either Shembo or Ishaq up on the line (Hand in the dirt or not). It's one way to get Ishaq on the field more, he's doing no good sitting behind Shembo and I think the light has finally come on for him. Plus it makes Nix more dangerous as the opposing offense has to decide if they can afford to double team him. I'm not a fan of Fox and Calabrese on the field at the same time, I think they should stick with the Calafox or whatever it is. Keep Grace on the field like Te'o as the Mike.

If Jaylon's getting confused, he should probably be spying Gardner, because it's brainless work. See Quarterback, follow quarterback.

I'm ready for it to be Saturday. I think we held back a bit last week and used Temple almost as a preseason game. I'd like to see us go uptempo a bit more often and run the offense out of the pistol formation. I also don't think we should "feature" a back a right now, I think we should use our stable to the fullest extent and give carries to the hot hand.

hopefully the crowd noise doesnt hinder this too much. Tommy i think can figure it out, but for him to communicate to everyone else on the field could be an issue. Unless we come out with some prefabricated play sequences.

Anyone know how BK typically sends plays in when he tries to speed up the pace?

Not so fast! Spying the QB doesn't mean you neglect other duties, it means you do that on top of coverage/run support. I think Whiskey discussed this in another thread. Jaylon would be the wrong person to do it since he's still getting his feet wet. A spy should be someone who doesn't think about plays, but rather reacts in a very cerebral manner. Basically, it must be instinctive.

My thoughts:

We'll see quite a bit of 3 man fronts with zone coverage. If we ask our ILBs to cover in man-to-man, the middle of the field will open up for Gardner to run. Diaco will, like always, try to keep everything in front of the D. Playing zone allows the ILBs to pick up crossing routes and still monitor the QB. They're not great at it, but hopefully Temple was a wake up call and this week is a refresher course.

Honestly, the key to our D will be the DOG position. Jaylon/Councell will HAVE to be able to cover Funchess and hold the edge on running plays (especially if the skunkbears run off tackle or behind the OT). If the DOG can seal the edge off and stifle some of those early running plays, it'll force Borges to go to the air with Gardner.

Don't believe I saw it mentioned anywhere, but I believe that Hoke is a clean 15-0 in the Big House since his arrival.

Ty Willingham could have gone 15-0 at home with their B1G schedule!

He's played 2 ranked teams at home in the last 2 years:

11/19/11 - #16 Nebraska 45-17
11/10/12 - #24 Northwestern 38-31OT

He's played 5 ranked teams in the last 2 years (not counting bowl games).

10/15/11 - @ #23 Mich St L 14-28
11/19/11 - #16 Nebraska W 45-17
9/1/12 - #2 Alabama L 14-41
9/22/12 - @ #11 Notre Dame L 6-13
11/10/12 - #24 Northwestern W 38-31OT

That is NOTHING to brag about. Hoke walked into a B1G that is absolute muff cabbage in a year when Cheaty McSweatervest was gone! I'm not scared of the big bad Hoke.

Reposting my sermon from the Tommy thread for Michigan week

Book of Irish, Chapter 125

14 On a dark night in South Bend, already far into a contest with the people of Michigan, there was but 3 points on the board for the Irish. The strength of the Defensive Apostles had kept the Philistine, Denard Robinson, from encroaching on their territory. Led by Saint Te'o, the Apostles turned away Michigans advance and many, many times intercepted the stones Robinson cast from his hand. Yet, the Offensive Apostles could likewise not breach the defenses of the Michigan stronghold.

The mighty Kelly then looked above. An angel appeared to deliver the message from the heavens:
"Send forth Reesus, for he shall carry the Irish to victory."
Kelly heard the angel and obeyed. Once more he pulled the prophet Golson from the game, and there was a great gnashing of teeth. Reesus appeared to lead the Irish into battle, his faith undeterred.

Reesus handed the rock to disciple Atkinson, yet the Michigan army pursued and dropped him for a 3 yard loss. Reesus still had faith. With a mighty heave he tossed his stone to the great Davaris Daniels for a 16 yard gain providing a down of the first degree. Disciple Riddick carried the ball twice, but the gains were meager against the opposition. Reesus then looked to the heavens and delivered a righteous strike to disciple TJ for a 24 yard gain, a mere 6 yards from the Wolverine's goal. Michigan hardened their hearts, for they would not allow the Irish to score. They interfered with Reesus's pass, prompting the striped wise men to penalize them for their ways. Then, and much to the disbelief of all, Reesus took the rock and somehow found his way past the enemy lines to score. There was much cursing and shock in the lands of Michigan on this day.

16 Late in the contest the score between both armies lay fixed at 13 to 6 in favor of the Irish. Time was short with only 3 minutes remaining and the enemy growing desperate. Despite hard running from disciple Riddick, there was yet 4 yards preventing the Irish from claiming victory. On a last attempt to prevent the Wolverines from invading their lands, Reesus found his disciple Eifert on a miraculous 38 yard pass that drove a dagger into the hearts of the enemy. It was enough to lift the spirits of the Irish and crush the Skunk Bears for good. Disciple Riddick continued to run the ball until time had expired. There was much rejoicing once again in South Bend with the Philistine, Robinson, finally defeated. Reesus exclaimed:
"Blessed are the Irish, for they shall not allow Michigan to taint this land again. Woe to those that call themselves Wolverines, for they are rodents and shall burrow into the soil to hide their sins!"
The legions of Irish in South Bend sang joyfully a most wonderful birthday wish to their fallen enemy as he left the field. The great Kelly beheld this and said "It is good." Despite all this, they still did not believe in Reesus.

Another thing that I noticed in person that probably didn't show up on tv was Nix running off the feild for subs, typically tired lineman tend to lumber off.

You can tell Nix has really worked on his conditioning this offseason. He was in pursuit every time you turned around and really for as big as he is, it was quite impressive.

Brian Kelly's Michigan Week Press Conference - One Foot Down

great breakdowns

Kelly said countless times that the RB situation is far from settled. There were multiple references to this needing time to "work out." When asked about any gap between the group of juniors vs. the freshman, Kelly was quick to say they all need work and will all "have some growing pains at the position. He's still willing to play them all and leverage their strengths to "make it work."
I found this to be a fascinating topic, because in last week's press conference, Kelly said that RB's typically need until week 6 to contribute meaningfully. I think we'll find out quickly if that's true or not this weekend. The popular theory that the staff treated the Temple game as a glorified scrimmage would explain why Bryant and Folston only really saw touches at the end of the game. Watch to see if either gets carries on Saturday, or if Kelly will give his star duo more time to bake in the oven and observe from the sideline.
Kelly clearly values the RB "closer" more than the guy who takes the first snap. He noted Theo was clearly the closer last year, and this year's guy has yet to be identified.

just found this gem

Kelly isn't calling the plays this year. He gave that right to Chucky.

I really like Musburger, but I may have to listen to this game on mute. What's the over/under on NCG mentions? I'm thinking at least 20.

i really like listening to the games on ABC because of this...as long as ND is winning...but man do they go overboard w/ somethings whereas Mayock sticks to the present

I think we mix up bringing 6 for pressure and dropping 7 into coverage with a spy in attempt to confuse and fluster a younger QB. Gardner didn't exactly set the world on fire with his passing week 1 and he threw 2 picks.
