Gotta feeling we see a fake field goal for a td to Robinson that will be very crucial....

The lack of 12 personnel against Temple was very suspicious. Kelly may be setting them up to work on run fits against the Pistol, only to trot out Eifert and Koyack for some power spread rushing come game time.

We lined up in 12 personnel 11 times vs. Temple (about 18% of offensive plays). Nine of the 11 plays were out of the pistol. I am not sure about the run/pass ratio but I would bet almost all of those plays were runs.

I suspect we'll see a higher percentage of 12 personnel this week and have success with the play-action pass vs. Man coverage. If they stay in zone, we'll just pound them with the run.

I'm really trying not to set myself up for disappointment, but I fully expect a comfortable victory this weekend. Where does Michigan have a matchup advantage on us?

What is anyone's opinion of our D in this game? I know DG had a decent game passing and running but also had two picks. How can we minimize our ILB deficiencies? I can't see Calabox spying him. Do we play with and extra safety or nickle with Fox on the field? I don't think we see 5 TOs from scUM this year.

They seem to think at every position except DL.

gardner extending plays.

1-2-3 punch from their RB's against our yet to be proven LB core.

Ok, so ND fans (me included) think we win every matchup of position groups and Michigan fans think they win all of them except DL.

Can someone with a better knowledge than I try to objectively break down the position group matchups this week? And rather than say our OL > their OL, how does our OL compare to their DL, our WR compare to their DB, etc.

eiferts back?!?!? sweet!!!

Wouldn't that be awesome?

Hoke: "Oh my gawd! Is that... Tyler Eifert's music?!"

Agreed. It seems strange that Kelly would suddenly decide to completely ditch his most productive formation at ND over the course of one offseason.

I think most of us were expecting us to just line up and run Temple over, a la Navy in 2012. That we didn't implies Kelly held something back.

Do you recall if those plays came mostly in the 2nd half? Kelly seemed resigned to salt the game away pretty early (again, hopefully to keep from tipping his hand for Michigan). Because lining up in 12 just to call an obvious inside run doesn't mean much. I don't recall seeing Koyack or Welch much in the first half.

Diaco did a great job containing Robinson in 2011 and 2012. I expect he'll use a similar strategy against Gardner; a contain-oriented rush, with some delayed blitzes to bring pressure.

As for the ILBs, I'd like to think they suffered the most from the total lack of film on Rhule and Reilly. That won't be an issue against Michigan. I expect Fox and Grace to do much better.

All but one came in the 2nd half. This is where I got that info: Scout.com: Eye in the Sky: Offense

What is the '12 man personnel'?

The first number indicates the # of RBs while the second number indicates the # of TEs.

10 personnel = Single back, 4 WRs
11 personnel = Single back, 3 WRs, 1 TE
12 personnel = Single back, 2 WRs, 2 TE
20 personnel = Two RBs, 3 WRs, 0 TE
21 personnel = Two RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE
22 personnel = Two RBs, 1 WR, 2 TEs

This is my thought as well. Absolutely no film to go over. ND had to adjust throughout the game and Temple threw all kinds of different things at Diaco (up-tempo, quick passes, etc.). I think the Temple game was a live scrimmage in reality (mostly anyway).

One thing that stood out to me was a few times Temple was waiting on ND's Defense to show itself. I remember ND showing Corner Blitz or Safety Blitz and Reilly adjusting the play (and it was obvious where the blitz was coming from) yet we stayed in it anyway. I don't understand that at all. Why get caught showing and then not adjust? Jackson was coming on a blitz (everyone knew it) meaning the safety had to scream over to the sideline to stop the receiver who just did a quick hitch?

Great article. Is this every week? My favorite take is this nugget about the Pistol:
"A 51-yard bubble screen catch-and-run to T.J. Jones (aligned as an old-school slot-back in triple-option lexicon) in which detached tight end Troy Niklas and X wide receiver Daniel Smith murdered their assigned defenders in space. Jones gained 26 yards after initial contact…"

I thought this was pretty fair from them though I don't agree that RB is a big UM advantage and I don't think their OL is better than ours.

QB: Rees < Gardner No contest but Rees isn't bad

RB: ND < Michigan Big UM advantage

OL: ND < Michigan UM interior is unproven ND's whole line is unproven. Lewan means big UM advantage

TE: ND = Michigan I'm not familiar with the ND TE could pedigree but better than Funchess?

WR: ND > Michigan Outside of Gallon we're thin.

DL: ND > Michigan Their front 3 is as good as anyones

LB: ND < Michigan Their guys are talented but unproven. The inside guys looked lost.

Secondary: ND = Michigan

Special Teams: ND < Michigan This could be the difference

Coaching: ND = Michigan Kelly's a good coach.

I agree with both. As someone said on that board, I'd rather lose guys on the outside than 3 in the interior OL.

I don't know what board they are pulling that initial post from. I don't think it was here.

So, if we take their analysis and agree that their RBs don't hold a big advantage (or any at all IMO) and our OL is better than theirs (really not a "homer" pick), where is their advantage? They have better LBs and Special Teams?

We will win by 3 TDs.

I'm no coach and IDK how to compare Temple to Central Michigan, but I watched both games at least once and I could not see an advantage on the OL. Ours only missed one pass protection (Lombard in 2nd quarter) and theirs gave Gardner time all day too.

Run blocking was really good to great for both teams.

Can you stop menstruating all over the board please? You've been nothing but a Negative Nancy since halftime during Temple.

Guys, it's ACamp's thing. It's more of a running joke that when he's positive things go badly for the Irish. He's being sarcastically negative, it starts each year at the beginning of the season. At least that's been my take on it.

True. But they didn't have to double or triple team a nose guard like they will this weekend. Lewan will be tied up with Tuitt, and their interior OL (again, 3 in a row played one game together) will have their freaking hands full.

I agree it was tough to gauge from one game. I certainly don't see Gardner getting that much time again, and you probably don't either. As we saw from him struggling to go through his progressions, it will be interesting to see how much he takes off on his own.

The post you quoted was my 2nd since the Temple game... really?

and yeah, last year I picked them to lose every game out of jest and it worked pretty well... so i continued with that... and will.

during the game I was disappointed with the D and stated so...as MANY posters did to my memory... then posted twice in three days... until now... dafaq?
