Here's how the Irish stack up against SU according to some of my favorite quantitative models:

Sagarin
ND - 12
SU - 45

F/+
ND - 15
SU - 58

FEI
ND- 13
SU - 50

S&P+ (Overall)
ND - 19
SU - 64

S&P+ (ND Off.)
Overall - 38
Rushing - 57
Passing - 25
Standard Downs - 43
Passing Downs - 34

S&P+ (SU Def.)
Overall - 54
Rushing - 31
Passing - 29
Standard Downs - 22
Passing Downs - 24

S&P+ (SU Off.)
Overall - 70
Rushing - 58
Passing - 99
Standard Downs - 98
Passing Downs - 39

S&P+ (ND Def.)
Overall - 10
Rushing - 27
Passing - 32
Standard Downs - 36
Passing Downs - 36

Based on these figures, it looks like Syracuse's passing attack doesn't pose much of a threat. I'd expect BvG to dial up some aggressive run blitzes.

Hopefully we can get our rushing attack on track.

The Cuse always seem to have some pretty good TFL stats. Guess they shoot the gaps a lot. Don't know as I have only seen about ten minutes of their game last weekend. Appears the Irish could feast off some counter run plays if so.

On defense, I would expect them to get after the Cuse QB. He seems to be their only real threat. Time for BVG to get aggressive.

Definitely agree with those saying we need to get the run game going this game before Stanford comes to town. Hopefully during the bye week we got the o-line issues worked out like Kelly had mentioned. Huge need, IMO. We can't expect to beat the big boys on our schedule if we're one dimensional.

Just woke up. I guess I slept for two years so thanks for the request. Very nice post, thank you.

But seriously...Manti was a great leader but he was on defense and people were just talking about how an away crowd doesn't effect a defense as much as an offense. I realize he was a huge reason for the success of 2012 but we went on the road with redshirt freshman Golson and played great every time we played at an opponents house. Now we have better leadership and understanding on offense with him at the helm it seems. We haven't seen him on the road yet this year but he's been pretty good so far with the exception of the opening drive against UM. He has 3 weeks to get those kinks worked out and I think we can all agree that this isn't the same Everett as 2012 to this point.

We also have some good leadership on defense with Joe Schmidt and Cody Riggs who has actually played in Tallahassee before so he has some experience down there and can probably help get the younger guys prepared. Neither one is Manti but they aren't slouches either, IMO.

This also isn't the same FSU team as last year so far. They look very beatable to me...but then again, I've been sleeping for two years so I guess I don't know what I'm talking about.
Their O-line looked very suspect against a pretty good Clemson D and D-line. So far BVG has shown he's willing to send the dogs and put pressure on the QB...and not just willing but he knows how to hit home as well. I realize that was with FSU's backup QB too but Auburn rattled Winston last year and that Auburn D wasn't that great so I think it's attainable for us to get home with the pressure as well...or at least make him hurry and rattle him a bit.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm expecting a close game.

Thanks again for the nice response.

Didn't mean that as a personal attack...my bad. The "wake up" is more towards people on here that are delusional about us thus far.

The 2012 team went to OU and dominated a good team. MSU was average at best, BC was horrid, and USC was without Barkley. But that is two years ago and has nothing to do with the current squad.

Fact of the matter is, we haven't played anyone yet. Rice is horrible and we took care of business. Michigan flat out is terrible, and did what we needed to do. Purdue is improved, but we struggled. Talking about going into FSU and winning is very premature - heck, I want to see how we perform against SU this week and fix the issues we have. They have largely been masked by playing terrible opponents.

I still don't buy Schmidt in the middle. His speed and size will be a liability, probably in two weeks, but I hope that I am wrong. FSU did look pedestrian, yes, because they had an immobile QB who cannot create outside of the pocket...think Tommy. That dynamic changes completely with a mobile QB, so does your pressures and scheme. We won't be able to run the same things Clemson did because of that.

There is nothing that makes me think, as of now, that we can run the ball to win the game. The 2012 team had a way of taking the last six minutes of the game and making you bleed - you were not going to see the ball again. We aren't there, and if we don't get there, it will haunt us when we have a lead, on the road or otherwise. Like you, I think this week will be close, unless we find a new play maker at WR and find depth in the secondary off the waiver wire.

Definitely. I wasn't implying that this team is the same as the 2012 ND team...just saying that some teams (not just former ND teams...just used the '12 ND team as an example everyone on here would remember) get pumped to go on the road and to face the most insurmountable circumstances (which is why I included A&M at Bama in '12 as well) and come out on top. If, and it's a big if, we head down there with no losses and no more big injuries I think we have a good shot...Winston or no Winston. We have some things we need to improve on like you said but so do they. Ok State gave them all they could handle and Clemson should have won that game if they didn't shoot themselves in the foot multiple times.

And we somehow protected Tommy the statue pretty well. I don't know how (Z Mart and Watt I'm sure were most responsible) since he had concrete feet... but we did. FSU's line just looked lost Saturday and Winston isn't immune to making bad decisions and letting some pressure get in his head like Auburn proved in last years title game. And Auburn's D was not good at all last year.

just curious: anyone know what Kellys record is after a bye week?

2010: Beat Utah 28-3
2011: Lost to USC 31-17
2012: Beat Miami 41-3
2013: Beat USC 14-10, Beat BYU 23-13

Some pretty big wins in there.

I don't think it has been posted. Cuse will be without their leading WR, leg injury (Scout)

See I agree with most of your post, and your sentiment. But I think we broke Michigan for the season; knocked all their players off their game by reducing their attitude to rubble; left a detailed blueprint of how to destroy the Michigan offense, by BVG, followed to the "T" by Utah; and we hurt four of their six best players.

And I think the win against Purdue was dominant.

I'll be there Saturday! I hope this game will be much better than ND's 1st trip to MetLife stadium against Navy! The fullback for Navy, Eckel I think it was run for almost 200 yds!

Austin Collinsworth is listed as Max Redfield's backup at safety, while Torii Hunter is C.J. Prosise's backup. Amir Carlisle (MCL strain) is not listed at all.

Cole Luke is back at No. 1 CB

What was the lineup vs. Purdue? How is it different? (srs) I didn't pay enough attention to the OL I guess.
