Serious question: since NIL is legal, the price of players seems to have skyrocketed from bag men days (if old rumors were accurate). Will a 5 figure bag outside the cap really make a big difference for a significant amount of recruitments where players are already pulling in 6 figures? We all know the SEC is too poor to afford much more than a paltry 5 figures
I mean, the SEC isn't too poor? LSU is running secret meetings on essentially how to squirrel state money into the football program, which really isn't a departure from their historical nature even if it is in kind. My greater point was they want to shrink the overall competitive pool, slow the rising costs, and strengthen their collective conference at the expense of everyone else. As the clip points out, the SEC doesn't consider getting caught cheating as reputational damage to their institutions where a lot of schools, including ours, does. To get all business-speak for a moment, that's a comparative advantage they'd really like to exploit again.

I'm always reminded of Andy Staples explanation for the rise of the SEC in the early 2000s. To sum up, the SEC has always cheated, but up until Slive became commissioner they were constantly narcing on each other to the NCAA. Slive put a stop to that, kept everything inhouse, and the conference zoomed to the top of college football.

The SEC is not poor to the extent that they bring in massive amounts of money through TV deals and CFP proceeds and can distribute that through revenue sharing. They're poor in the sense that their alumni/donor base doesn't seem to put as much money into their NIL collectives as the Big 10 schools (UT and A&M oil money aside).

So now he's demanding LSU give him *their copy* of his Heisman.

The trophy committee gives a copy to the player and one to the school. He wants theirs. Lol not happening.

I don't even gaf about LSU, but get fucked Jayden.

This is straight up a strange one. It’s akin to mental breakdown or something. From what I remember Daniels was always smiling when playing, seemingly a good guy. He never seemed like a showboat or me first player. I haven’t followed him too closely at lsu but I can’t remember anything like this at commanders too. It’s like he’s intentionally tarnishing and sabotaging himself at lsu.

Well, some people think money is 'tax free' when it comes in greenbacks.

I've always despised retired numbers. If you want to honor the player, then put their name in some sort of team hall of fame.
It's one thing with pro sports teams, where players are on a team for a decade or more. If you had a Hall of Fame-level career at a place and the team decides that no one will wear #12 or whatever again, OK, that's cool. It's fun to go to a Celtics game and try to recall all like 20 guys whose numbers are up in the rafters, and, no, no one should wear #6 or #33 for that team ever again. There's plenty of other numbers to go around.

But college players come and go all the time (especially now). Daniels was at LSU for two seasons. Heisman or no, he was a rental. And you have 105 guys on a college football team who all need numbers, even with this confusing silliness where two players share all the good ones. No one's ever supposed to wear #5 again because of a good QB whose team didn't even make the playoffs?

Agree to disagree. I hate that no one can wear number 3 for the Blackhawks or 12 on the Jets.

CJ should be able to wear 13 when he gets drafted by the Jets instead of changing because Don Maynard had a great career 70 years ago.

SEC teams have to cheat again JUST TO KEEP up. This isn't about domination, it's about survival. Texas is going to own the league if they don't figure something out.

Maybe they can win the SEC one time before we start projecting that they're going to own the conference lol

Fair point. It seems crazy to say it right now, but I think it's a reasonable prediction based on financial capability.
Nah. The SEC is not own-able (unlike the ACC, Big Ten and old Big 12 which were each thoroughly owned by one team for most of the 2010s).
A&M, Georgia, Florida, LSU, probably Bama, at least, all have sufficient financial capability to compete. And if money were all it took, A&M would have a lot more titles to its name already, instead of a quarter-century of hype.

How about instead he just gets drafted by a franchise that doesn't eternally suck.

They already have the most pay for play roster possible and I'd predict they lose it again this year. Add in the fact that Kirby isn't going anywhere and Texas A&M's willingness to spitefully go dollar for dollar and I don't think anybody is owning that conference for the forseeable future.

"Own" might be a reach. But I don't see Georgia, Bama, Florida. or LSU spending on the same level as UT. LSU is trying to figure out how to funnel tax dollars into football. A&M is another story though- they can definitely keep up with UT when it comes to spending. Whether they can turn that into sustained success is TBD.

How much did LSU just spend to replace its coach? They are invested in winning. And even in this era I wouldn't discount the hometown talent they can recruit.
Georgia? They have a large and affluent alumni base to tap, and there's tons of money in Atlanta. If they want to spend, they'll be able to.
Florida remains a mystery as to why they haven't been better. But if they ever got their shit together there's no limit to what that program can do.
Bama, I agree, is a smaller state with fewer (above-board) resources. But they are accustomed to winning and will likely do what it takes to remain competitive. Also at this point more than half their students come from out of state and football is a big reason why. They need to stay relevant.

I hate the "it just means more" stuff. But it means a lot to all these programs (plus Ole Miss and Tennessee) and I have a hard time seeing any of them just letting Texas dominate that conference.

I was talking about roster spending specifically, but yeah LSU did spend a boatload to get Kiffin. They also spent a ton in the portal. That said, Louisiana is generally a poor state (same w/ Mississippi) and I wonder what the limit to their spending is if the reports are true about them trying to siphon state tax dollars to the LSU football program. You don't hear about UT or A&M doing that with their access to seemingly unlimited oil money. Georgia had the #3 recruiting/portal class last year, and they're probably not going anywhere even with this year's class down in the mid teens. My point is UT (and A&M) just seem to be operating on another level from the rest of the SEC with roster spending. To your point, these SEC schools are psychotic when it comes to their football programs and will probably do whatever it takes to keep up.

If SEC teams had money to spend like Texas, ND, OSU, Oregon, Miami and Indiana, they would have already. They would have the second they were allowed to. They haven't and it's already cost their biggest programs to start to slide. TAMU has been spending like a Biltmore heir, but they still haven't done much. Not sure what their issue is.
