Might as well make one, only saw one for their scheduling.

First, Vandy got flat out embarrassed last night by Temple. TEMPLE! 37-7 and Vandy's only TD came on a bobbled punt. Just proves what we've all been saying for a very long time about the bottom of the SEC being as bad as anyone.

Second, Sumlin is an offensive genius. He's cut from the same cloth as Chip Kelly but with the air raid attack plan. The SEC West is truly absurd... A&M, Alabama, Auburn, LSU. Lots of different styles, lots of talent.

Nice thread. I was a bit surprised by South Carolina last night. Was A&M that good or USC that bad??

The Aggies were on fire last night throughout the entire game. They look to have a more improved defense as the year moves on. They finally have some sort of pass rush that has eluded them in the past.

I couldn't watch the Vanderbilt game after the first few drives, it just wasn't interesting to me. Similar feeling in the Ole Miss vs. Boise State game. They had so many turnovers and penalties in that game it was hard to watch. Ole Miss has talent to be good as well, but they have no leadership it seems.

Not to take anything from A&M, missed the game because of class and kids soccer, but South Carolina was greatly overrated. Losing Clowney, changing D and losing Shaw they had no business being in the top 10.

I agree that the west is stacked though. However that's all the SEC has this year and I would put Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, ASU and U$C against any of those four. I think the PAC12 is the over all strongest conference

It was a beautiful confirmation of Manziel's ability to put up big numbers in a system designed to allow quarterbacks to put up big numbers, and that he was special enough to get bested by literally the first dude replacing him.

Totally agree, but they still dropped like 700 yards on them with oodles of brand new skill position players. That show was impressive regardless of who they were playing and it's not like South Carolina is Purdue.

Top to bottom, I don't think there is a question that the PAC12 is the strongest conference this year.

My thoughts exactly on Sumlin. A&M could of started either QB last night and they would of had success. Its the system that he uses, easy decisions for the QB with a fast tempo keeping the defense off balance.

Agree with you on South Carolina - always overrated.

USC would get worked by A&M, Alabama, Auburn and LSU (assuming they get average QB production). They'd get destroyed in the trenches. Absolutely no depth.

I'm not sold on ASU either. They're a good team, not great.

I would agree that the PAC12 looks great, but I still think some are overvaluing offense in that league. There has only been one team that has played defense in the PAC12 for the last few years and that is Stanford.

I think that UCLA is overrated in that they have a great offense and not a lot of defense. The two best teams they played last year beat them up.

Living in aggie country, I've been giving fans a hard time that'd they be lucky to get 7 wins. I was impressed with their play and may have underrated them. However I'm still not sold. Usc looked awful, especially there defense. It seemed like every pass play cbs were 5 yards away trying to catch up to the wr. South Carolina does not look like a top 25 team imo.

Funny that he wanted to return to his Alma Mater (Purdue) and coach, but instead they extended Danny Hope's contract...

to release him a year later.

I'd say we lucked out at least!

T Town's SEC take... from what I was able to catch.

Bama - still can't defend the spread. We gonna have to outscore some teams to beat them... cause we sure as hell ain't gonna stop them. Offense looked good and Sims played better than I thought he would.

Auburn - they will miss Mason even with Artis-Payne in the backfield. Marshall is the same. I expect a lot of 7-8 man fronts to stop that read option as Marshall still doesn't impress me throwing the ball.

LSU - no QB = no threat. Wisky should be ashamed of themselves allowing the swamp kitties to beat them.Andfour carries for Gordon in the second half??? WTF? LSU struggles all year if their QB play doesn't improve.

Aggies - gonna have to outscore them to beat 'em.

Ole Miss / Miss St - both looked decent but tougher opponents await.

Ga - looked pretty solid and Gurley is the real deal. Their run game is awesome and their defense played better once they got the lead. If the Dogs can play ahead of their opponent on the scoreboard, they will be pretty good. Even or behind, they can be had.

Tenn - B. Jones has done a great job getting them young guys ready to play. Can't see them being anything other than average, but they looked better than I expected they would.

S. Carolina - got beat down at home. Can't have that if you want everyone to take you seriously.

Mizzou - not impressed. Luckily they play in the East so they could finish somewhere in the top four of the division

KY - got some offensive weapons but that defense looked horrendous

My overall take:

The SEC teams looked average at best. Still, first week and a tremendous amount of new talent on the field. If that talent improves as the season goes forward, the conference will likely represent itself well. I didn't see much from the other conferences to indicate that they were any better. The ACC looked pitiful and that comes as no surprise. The B1G looked like... well, the B1G. Average to slightly below average. The Big 12 teams looked average as well. The Pac 12 looked much like the SEC. A few good looking teams, some that look like pretenders (UCLA), and some that were just plain awful.

All in all, it was opening weekend so all is not lost. But, I hope to see better football as the season progresses. I can't take much of what I was able to catch on Saturday.

You got the UCLA thing backwards. Their defense was their offense in that last game.

SEC West is just scary. We're an underdog to 4 of those teams on a neutral field, and probably just ~7 point favorites over Ole Miss and MSU on a neutral field.

We all being force fed that Southern kool-aid by the four letter network. Preseason estimates always seem to hyperbolize the top schools, which turn out to have feet of clay.

Who was prepared and impressed?
Georgia, Texas A&M

Who needs work to reach their hype level?
Alabama, Auburn, LSU

Who did themselves a disservice by scheduling marshmallows?
Mississippi State, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri

Who deserves congratulations for some of the toughest national scheduling?
Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia

When will we know more?
Georgia, South Carolina - this weekend (the only game worth paying attention to)
Auburn - Sept 18
Alabama, LSU, Florida, Miss State - Sept 20
Texas A&M - Sept 27
Ole Miss - Oct 4

For someone born and bred on a teams being independent, it's hard to lump so many different quality levels together and rank a conference. Like saying "my brother can beat up your brother".

Just glad I do not invest in the SEC network (Schedule)

TTown and Bishop, I'm interested to get your guys' take on the Bama QB situation. Sorry if I missed it in another thread or something like that in the past couple of days.

I made a point somewhere around here during spring football that I found it funny that everyone was immediately talking about Coker being the answer for Bama at QB and how he would take them to new heights. It was funny to me because he hadn't played much college ball yet, and hadn't even earned the starting nod at Bama yet.

I understand he's probably still playing catch-up in the grand scheme of Bama's offense, so my question is: Is it still a given that he will be THE guy at QB for Bama at some point, and that he will elevate them?

Or was I right in spring thinking that everyone was putting too much weight behind Jimbo Fisher's praise of Coker and how he was "so close to Jameis" during the FSU QB competition?

Think your partially right. Coker has way more upside than Sims but he lacks the knowledge of the offense. So much so that some in the "know" are shocked that he hasn't progressed. I think he gets his chance in the next couple of games to show he is capable of running the offense. If not, then Sims should do just fine. If he is equal to Sims, I would expect him to get the nod as he has two years left to Sims one year. I was surprised at Sims play against WV. He made some really good throws, made some plays with his legs, and missed three passes that he should have made. But all in all, with the talent around him on offense, he don't have to do it all. Guess we will see what the next couple of weeks holds. Going into the Fla game, I think we will know for sure who the starter is the rest of the year.

As far as Jimbo and his praise, it was speculated that he kept Coker in the QB competition simply to keep him from transferring as the next QB in line apparently wasn't ready at all. I fully believe that too. Coker wasn't going to challenge JW for the position. Coker looks the part... just needs to learn and perform the part.

Which power conference scheduled the most FCS games last week?

Right. In order...

  • SEC - 2
This week?

  • ACC & Big 12 - 4

Two week totals...

  • ACC - 10
  • Big 12 - 10
  • Big 10 - 9
  • Pac 12 - 8
  • SEC - 5

Almost every Power Conference team will play a FCS team except:

I don't think it's a given any longer that Coker is going to take over at some point this year. Sims has taken his game to a whole new level and is on the verge of having the job locked up. Remember, Sims is basically a running back who has been converted into a qb and his passing ability was suspect at best. He put in a tremendous amount of work during the off season and looks like a real qb now. He doesn't have Coker's cannon arm, but I've been very impressed with his command of the huddle, his decision making, the speed of his play, and how confidently he's played.

Coker has the arm and looks awesome in drills, but he's still learning our system and seems to hesitate and play indecisively in scrimmage or game situations. He doesn't have the system down well enough to run the offense confidently yet. Time and game experience will rectify that, but I think he's likely going to spend the rest of the season as the #2 guy and get ready to be the starter next year.

Disorderly Conduct Charges Against Ricky Seals-Jones Dropped
16 hours ago
Freshman wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones was arrested in the spring on disorderly conduct charges after a dispute at North Gate. Today, the former Army All-American had those charges dismissed, Brent Zwerneman reports.

Seals-Jones' attorney Cameron Reynolds told the Houston Chronicle, “He’s ready to put this behind him and keep focusing on football."

Seals-Jones was a five-star, ranked No. 25 overall in the 2013 247Sports Composite. He has eight catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns through two games this season.

Mississippi St goes from unranked to to 15? Because they beat another overated SEC team? When does it happen that everyone realizes the SEC is mediocre this year?

What did LSU drop to? The way I see it is teams had a chance to really screw up the SEC perception and failed. Wisconsin being one and if ECU could have beat SC, those two would have been huge. Kansas State would have really thrown things into a spiral.

Now it looks like Mizzou needs to upset someone, SC needs to upset another, Kentucky take a game and then have SEC fall in bowls. At this point I think only the SEC champ is in the Playoff. Again...AT THIS POINT. That is a great thing. If they win the payoff with only one team in, everything is solidified.

I hate the SEC as much as the next guy but when outsiders get a chance, the SEC seems to pull one out. Sucks but respect has been earned.

Mediocre? Uh...depends how you feel about every other conference. Probably a bit of an overstatement. The SEC is definitely not as strong as many people think, but it's still a top 2-3 conference. And frankly, it's pretty pathetic how people believe certain members of the media when they hype up the SEC as the greatest thing ever. Especially when the numbers suggest otherwise. Just think for yourselves. It's really not that hard. However, the SEC is 5-2 against other "Power 5" conferences, and I believe that the Big XII is only 4-6. So, you could make the case that it is one of the 2 best conferences.

I disagree with MSU going from unranked to #15, largely because I felt that LSU was overrated because of their youth and inexperience. This has happened before, though. Even outside of the SEC. Did you feel the same way in 2005 when ND went from unranked to #12 after beating Pitt, who went on to have a losing season, and a very inconsistent Michigan team (a game where star RB Mike Hart got injured early in the first half)?

We went to #20 after week one, and then #10 after beating a highly touted Michigan team. Hindsight is 20-20 but no one will say the same of Mississippi St. Lost to MSU by 3 points, lost to USC by 3 points and tOSU by 14 in the bowl game.

SEC homerism at its finest here. Oh MSU just beat LSU and MSU isn't ranked? Well lets fix that, bump them up, give LSU a small bump down and voila! 8 SEC teams in the top 25.
