Richt won a lot of games for Ga. But his problem was pretty simple. He didn't win enough of the right games. His record against ranked opponents the last five or six years is horrendous. He started out great at Ga but has failed recently... and yes, he came close in 2012 but again, he didn't win the big one.

Same with Les only Les has been trending worse than Richt.

I have never been sold on Gus to run a big time CFB program.

Sumlin isn't earning his money at A&M. I will give him credit for at least getting "third and Chavis." But A&M has never finished higher than third in their division in the SEC and that should not justify the salary he is making.

Stoops has done well at Ky with what he started with. Missing a bowl game this year may hurt him a bit but it's Ky. Making bowl games and getting an 8-4 season every 4-5 years and they would probably build a statue.

All in all, the coaches in the SEC are paid well for the most part. And expectations... real or not.... come with that. Is it fair? Is it realistic? No. But it is what it is.

One could argue that it is fair considering they also talk about how great the SEC is.

This is a zero sum game. Sounds like you would probably turn over SEC coaches every three or four years. Maybe the game is for SEC coaches to take as much as they can and protect themselves with Jimmy Sexton's contract clauses and with lots of rumors of interviewing for other jobs. You can't always get what you want....

I wouldn't disagree with that. But gone are the days of the Frank Beamers. And that's sad. Big time money in CFB drives big time expectations. I like Richt and Miles but I am also being honest in knowing that if my team and coach were going through those rough stretches, I would probably be yelling for change. And that's sad on my part to a degree. Unrealistic? Yep. Reality? Yep.

That's not an exclusive issue in the SEC. Most coaches have agents that work for them to secure as much as they can to protect themselves. While we could argue the ethics behind what Sexton does, Sexton is great at it and if we were coaches, we would more than likely want him representing us as well. We all can't have J. Jacobs at Auburn who throws money and huge buyouts at their coaches and have them on payroll long after they have been dismissed.

Of course this is not an exclusive issue to the SEC. Sexton, while represnting a few coaches in the NFL if I recall correctly, mostly has SEC/ACC coaches both HCs and OCs as you probably know. The J. Jacobs are stuck with dealing with him. He undoubtedly represents almost all Bama's coordinators, including Kiffin.

Huge buyouts with long-term payouts affected ND with Charlie Weis. In the SEC not only Tubberville and Chizak, but Petrino, Nutt, Muschamp, Dooley, Sherman and Joker Phillips come to mind. Southern Mississippi had to sell one of their home games to pay Ellis Johnson's buyout. Auburn has the money and boosters to burn.

I give the examples of Miles and Richt for their tenure with contract info for any thoughts - SEC or others. I understand you feel it's not fair but reality. (Richt's contract info to follow - very interesting.)

I think it has much more to do with how F. King Alexander interacts with the State House. Remember, he had to practically beg for funding this year. If he allowed this to occur, it makes both him and the State House look bad.......AKA, don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Retaining Miles as LSU football coach was about more than the millions of dollars at stake, Alexander says

“After the type of budget battle we went through this past spring we certainly do not need to be throwing tens of millions of dollars around under certain circumstances,” he says. “We don’t need to go into the next legislative session with a black eye that we’re throwing tens of millions of dollars around on issues that aren’t associated with academic progress.”

Forbes Welcome "The Real Reason LSU Was Smart To Keep Miles"

LSU football’s profit margin has remained remarkably stable during Miles’ tenure, landing between 64% and 67% of revenue in all but one of the last ten seasons (profit was 57% of revenue two seasons ago). Compare that to Alabama, which has seen its football profit margin decline from 72% in 2007 to 47% last year. Only Georgia and Florida have consistently outperformed LSU over that time, and the latter joined Alabama in taking a recent dip.

...I would suspect that you don't replace Miles unless you have someone of equal or greater ability within range of your rope. Say Jimbo Fisher who may then have bolted within sight of the gate. That coupled with the outpouring of support from players and fans could have been reasons for retention....

Looks like more of the story is coming out.

LSU's mishandling of Les Miles situation, Jimbo Fisher pursuit costly for 2016 outlook | Scout's Take podcast | NOLA.com

"Again, I think LSU felt like they had him. I think Jimbo maybe was interested to a point, but I don't know that he was ever interested in marriage, but I think dating was something that maybe was something he wanted to do. It helped him, but also, you never know is LSU willing to make a crazy offer and make him the highest paid coach in college football by 3 or 4 million. If that would've happened, well then, maybe we'd be having a different story, but I think LSU wanted to hire him and make him a really good offer, but they weren't going to double his salary."

The difference between Les and Richt is Les won a NC and went to another. In the past decade Richt had only nearly sniffed the NC 1 time and choked hard at that chance. I feel like when you win a ring you earn a little bit more patience, also Richt had been at UGA longer than Les has been with LSU.

Mark Richt's contract and more

Mark Richt's contract and more

Richt was fired for performance against expectations (see above post). Bulldog faithful saw him come up short of goals that can be summarized in that he was not a Nick Saban. Few are. Ricxht was however the fifth most winning active college football coach and has a 74% winning percentage.

Richt was respected by his players, fellow coaches and his AD who expressed admiration for him as a person, for his values and for his achievements, which included an average of 9.7 wins per season over fifteen years. 9-3 was not good enough.

Richt's contract extension this past January made the sixth highest paid SEC coach (he had slipped to twelfth) behind the five SEC West coaches. Unlike Miles or the other SEC West coaches, Richt did not have a huge buyout - $1.6 million - for Georgia. He did not sign it due to one clause not about money, but Georgia will honor the full two years since they feel a handshake agreement is binding for them and their appreciation for Richt's performance and values. A small buyout reflects their philosophy that after the initial contract, extensions should not bind a coach if he wants to leave and burden the athletic department if he is fired.

Unlike LSU, Georgia Athletics is very profitable - $77 million in revenues, $26 million in expenses.

Specific contract agreements from College football salaries: How Georgia's Mark Richt makes millions

It's Richt's job to maximize that revenue. His contract specifies that he "take any and all reasonable actions ... to generate substantial net revenue for the Association and University," an unusual clause for coaching contracts.

Riicht's contractual duties also include soliciting sponsors for marketing opportunities and helping to find donors for scholarship endowments.

Richt's base salary is $400,000. His contract with the UGa Athletic Association lists "other university compensation" as $1.5 million for media appearances, $1.2 million for footwear and apparel endorsements and almost $130,000 for camps and clinics. (The $3.3 million figure also includes about $114,000 from Richt's athletically related outside income report.)

Georgia endows football scholarships. Like Miles, coaches' salaries come mainly through the school's Athletic Foundation/Association. So there are similarities but some differences between Miles' and Richt's contracts as well as the background financial situations for both institutions.

Scott Cochran, Bama's S&C coach, was thought to be going to UGA with Smart. Apparently Saban made him an offer he couldn't refuse and it was announced today that he will be staying at Bama. I think this is a HUGE thing. Cochran's been a big part of our success with not only his S&C work, but as a motivator.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000/yr to stay is what the rumors are. Unreal.

Hotdamn! That is some cash for an S&C guy. Are there bonuses built in for novel PED usage? ZING!

Dude's workouts and conditioning program are legendary. It's not so much the size that amazes me as it is how agile and conditioned even the big guys are. 320 lb linemen who can do standing backflips and have motors that just don't slow down. Henry never seemed to tire at all even in the 4th quarter after 30 or 40 carries, or a dozen carries in a row.

So what little offense the Gator's had this season is all gone for next year. Taylor, Grier, and Robinson. Ouch.

Muschamp sure left the cupboard bare on the offense side.

Yep. They got some offensive help coming in but it's going to be an uphill climb I would think. Robinson moving on is probably best for them as he was a cancer any way. Grier apparently has more issues than just OTC supplements, and Taylor can't really get any better than he did this year. VHIII will leave on the defensive side and that is a big loss as well. Mc has his work cut out for sure.

Yeah, but eventually you reach a point where the differences between one training regime and another taper off. You can look at the Russian periodization, various HIIT regimes, posterior chain explosion, etc, etc.

And no doubt, Henry looked like he was still fresh after his first 30 carries. The LBs in particular always look bigger for the Tide. Maybe it's a psychological thing after the a$$ beating we took in the championship game.

Memphis kicked him off the team for this, though that doesn't really mean much since he's a senior and it was his last game. The Auburn equipment manager should press charges against him for assault, though.
