Hey Scott, go pick up BVG and take a nice long road trip together. See the sights, I hear Yellowstone is beautiful this time of year. Wine country is also lovely. When you guys are ready to come back to South Bend, go recreate the end of Thelma and Louise. Thanks buddy.

Another banner day for our TEs.

Special Teams weren't horrible tonight, but honestly I still think any success we have there has everything to do with Yoon's kicking and Sanders' athleticism. I've been saying for some time that Booker has brought nothing to the TE position. "But Eifert" is always the response. I think any success we had with Eifert had everything to do with the fact he was a freak, and he had a year of work with Parmalee. We've been less than bland at TE since Booker took over.

He got Koyack and Niklas drafted, so he must be doing SOMETHING right..........

I'm more concerned with their TE production while at ND rather than draft status. YMMV.

Do you think that maybe our TEs have just been lackluster regardless of coaching? Some kids just don't pan out. Alize seemed to be doing really well and was going to be a crucial part of this offense. It's hard to lose a guy during fall camp and expect the position group to be just as good. Also, the BK offense just doesn't really utilize TEs in a flashy way IMO

Smythe had 2 targets. Whose fault is that? Bookers? CBK's? QB's? or Smythe's?

If the system is not geared to throw to QB's, why is it their fault when they have 1 rec for 8 yds on just 2 targets unless you think the TE's were only open 2 times in the 30 pass plays?

No doubt they underperformed at ND. But their position coach has them prepared enough that the NFL came calling, so he must be doing something right. Maybe it's not the position coach, but the play caller?

Sure. I have no idea what the problem is with our TEs. All I know is that their production has dropped every year since Booker took over. Since none of us are at every practice or in the meetings we really have no idea what is going on. All we can judge is what happens on gameday and what kind of production occurs. Same with any position group. Who do we blame when the D consistently stinks?

I think it's a combination of both things. Niklas was drafted because he was a physical specimen... I'm also now convinced that Koyack was drafted "because ND TE."

I think the TE's need to be given more of an opportunity, and part of that seems to be because the current "true" TE's aren't living up to the billing as in-line blockers that can also catch the ball... if they stood out as true weapons, they'd get their chances.

At the same time, BK has never actually had/used a true stud TE in the traditional sense aside from Eifert, and the argument could be made that he wasn't a true TE and that BK lucked into having him as a weapon. Niklas was close, but BK didn't really feature him. His best TE at UC was Ben Gidugli, who was essentially a jumbo WR that patrolled the seams.

I'm just rambling now, but I'm trying to say that we've kind of been duped into believing ND as TE-U, and it's because of both coaching and game planning, draft history be damned.

Joe Staley on Brian Kelly moving him from TE to OT.

“I started out as a skinny 200 pound wide receiver coming out of high school,” Staley said. “I was a sprinter and all of that stuff. I was really fast. I ran a 21 in the 200. Then I got fat. I went to college. Brian Kelly came in my sophomore year. Played tight end my freshman year in college. Brian Kelly came in and said ‘We do not use tight ends in our offense but we want to keep you on the field in some way. We are going to move you to tackle.’ I cried my eyes out. I am not afraid to admit it. Almost transferred but then stayed, gained weight, busted my butt and got drafted.”

What's changed?

What percentage of Eifert's receptions were on plays where he was attached to the line? Eifert was more WR than TE, he was unattached in the slot or split wide most times in my mind.

This...The only TE who caught a substantial amount of passes lined up in a traditional TE set since Kelly was Niklas

Koyack and Niklas have hardly lit the NFL on fire since being drafted. Also, I believe they both had a year in the program before Booker took over TE duties.

We have these big bodied TEs that we don't use near the goal line anymore. We did pretty well in the redzone last night though.

WTB new TE and ST coach. 12 receptions to a TE all year, and we gave up both a KR and PR for TDs tonight. I'll say it again, any success we had on ST last year had everything to do with the insertion of Yoon at kicker and Sanders as a returner. On a whole our ST are not very good, especially in coverage. That's coaching.

If Kelly is back, there is no way Booker can return.

Kelly needs to appoint a full time coach to special teams.

If BK wont fire him, Booker needs to be PROMOTED to a full time recruiting analyst.

He's truly the worst assistant coach I've ever seen.

Pretty good right? Was under the impression that's why he has a job. Still, something's got to change. His units are the worst on the team.

I guess he is in the same situation as HH then? good recruiter, bad coach

Hiestand is not a bad coach.

The line is bad this year. Last year they were arguably the best OL in the entire country. They were also VERY good in '12, and pretty darn good in '13. His development of players and putting them in the pros + the production of the unit as a whole over the last five years clearly justifies him being retained. We are lucky to have him.

Paul Longo is questionable as a strength coach. I've been skeptical of his ability to develop our guys as they often look underdeveloped and get pushed around. I think it's a big part of the issues we have dominating the line of scrimmage.

No excuse for him to have a job next year at ND. Average recruiter. Bad TE coach. Awful ST coach.

I don't see how Kelly makes it into next year without changing something. New D.C. aside I think he has to change it up somewhere. Booker would seem to be the easy choice.

He has to go, I hate to "fire" anyone that has a family and this is their job but also they have ONE job. He has failed all year.

Hell with that...Let Kelly look in the mirror. Start there.
